I hate Gallaway. He's a scrappy defender, and that's it. After the recent Young/Old Socceroos stints for Brillante, Goodwin, Hoole, etc I'd be wagering on them starting ahead of a "local" boy with no pedigree in Gallaway.

Virgili has this form every preseason. It means nothing.

Agreed that the success of our season hinges largely on Brown re-finding form. GVE prefers Cara as a #6/8 as opposed to a #10.

Neville is a donkey, even at Perth he was a Donkey. can't cross can't control a ball and run heavy first touch and can't tackle without fouling.

Neville is what GVE is turning the rest of the squad into via his possession based playing it out from the back style.

We will win a few matches this year, Perth at home probably, Heart, possibly even away. but I guarantee we'll struggle to compete against the likes of Victory, WSW, Gypo's and Sydney. Wellington may be the Dark horse with a new coach who isn't likely to play football without the players to do it.

I think number 10 is our most glaring weakness (unless Brown rediscovers his Gold Coast form) so perhaps have Caravella in the number 10 role if Brown continues to play like last season. I think Virgili has shown so far pre season that he has developed his game further so he gets a start.

And depending on how GVE wants us to play I'd have Heskey (hoofball) or Taggart (football).

Neville spent a long time out at Glory and then found his spot taken when he came back.

Combined with the injury he had early on at Newy, not surprised he was a bit underdone last season, especially at a new club. He is definitely a starting A-League RB though, bit of a waste warming a bench. Send him to Welly if you're not going to use him! :lol:

Newcastle have a good squad imo. Plenty of youngsters pressing for spots who should all develop well, so I didn't get the criticisms last year.

Burns back is a plus, you just need someone to usurp Zadko now :lol:

GP - I actually rate neville. But cb? Don't see it tbh

Neville struggled last season. Apparently he was injured the whole time, so he's hoping for a better year this year obviously. I would have put him in the starting lineup but I can't see any coach keeping brillante out after his recent form.

GVE would probably want to fit in hoole somewhere too. Tricky business.

James brown is the answer to our number 10 - if he can refind his gcu form. He was awful last season - missing confidence because of injury

That's so unfortunate for Neville. What a 'bad move' perhaps for him, even though Risdon may've temporily kept him out of the team here. IF he came back to Perth, we still have a spot free for him to partner Thwaite at CB. That'd be good and a welcome home coming IMHO.

Neville wasn't at his best for Newy last season, whilst Brillante consistently puts in a good shift no matter the position.

Taggart seems 'highly likely' to start on the right side of attacking 3 as pv4 says. Infact pv4's front 3 seems pretty much spot on/confirmed. UNLESS a Taggart or Burns ends up behind Heskey in that AM/Second Striker role, like TJWhalan's formation. Either way Taggart is highly likely to start along with Burns and Heskey ofc.

So, as a neutral A-League supporter of sorts, the only variables for the Jets line up is indeed Chapman's CB partner, where Jets seek an experienced leader to partner young Chapman. Though, worst comes to worst Bowds, you can slot the experienced Josh Mitchell in there. He surely played a fair bit at CB with the Jets last season.

And AM - seems 'a variable position' for a few clubs - well Glory and Jets anyway - But Brown DOES seem a leading young candidate from the bunch?

Hard to say bowdz. Gve is threatening this 343 formation but when we sign our promised cb I'm sure we'll go to 4213 again. My idea for starting XI:

The only definites are heskey as main striker and burns on left side of three pronged attack line, gve has cconfirned both of them

cbowden, you are a longer term follower of the A-League, like many of us, if you struggle for a clear idea for some of the teams, surely you can just deduce for yourself? Most squads are near full now and while it may be more clearer how some may line up than others, there's still enough personnel, including personnel from last season, as too coaches from last season (Bar Gombau - now THAT'S a REAL variable), to be able to 'fill in the blanks'?

BTW I also notice with the FIFA games, the 'starting line ups' for many of the sides 'are' 'rarely' 100% correct and even if they are, they will more likely be 'were' (were correct) as preferred line ups can quickly change soon into the season, depending on form, fitness, late transfers in and even bright young stars bolting into the line up. And by time the game is released and fans buy it, most of the starting line ups in Europe will have changed to some degree, as too here.

Fans can and will make their own personal adjustments to line ups, if they don't 100% agree or indeed have their own tactical approach they seek to employ.


Also, the line up TJWhalan posted, that seems both pretty good and pretty likely to me (excluding whether Milicevic arrives or not). You could easily just plump for his line up, even if it turns out not to be 100% correct. But most of it should be, given the coach from last season is still there and many in TJWhalan's line up were indeed utilised there, last season. Though again, Whalan's fellow fans to confirm or adjust it, flipside I couldn't see the line up being too much different from that - Except Burns being on one of the flanks instead (Probably right side, where he has Virgilli) and Bridges coming to play behind Heskey?

I think he should be given the time his contract allows, I dont want us to become one of those clubs that puts so much pressure to succeed on the coach immedietly that we are changing coaches every season when things dont go right. Yes GVA has had ample time but sacking him is the first step in a slippery slope.

What he has done is actually recruit well in youth and if we get Milicevic then this season could be promising.

I've played many games against (and had many friends in) a team coached by Craig Deans in State League. I've also watched many, many years of him coaching the youth team. He should never be given the coaching gig for a senior HAL team. He's a crocked ex-defender who is just generally a nice guy but brings nothing new to the table, and is one of them coaches who becomes everyones mate more than actually coaches anyone.

Clacka I've heard mixed reviews on. Sounds like he's much better with younger (juniors) players than senior players.

In answering - we don't have the replacement coach in our ranks. When we signed GVE, we should have brought in Farina or Merrick instead - I said it a thousand times back then. Would like to see Papas have a go, though.

Why exactly? Have you seen how his teams play? I genuinely ask.

Also, what about Zane? It may be a little early to ask, but similarly, have any of you seen how his NYL or W-League team, season before, played?

Zane would be such a good news, home boy, who found troubled times, turned good, story!

Definitely do not want Craig Deans. Someone like Arthur Papas or Ante Milicic would be ideal.

Biggest concern is that we have another mediocre season but scrape into 5-6th which will somehow validate GVE's coaching position at the club and he gets a renewed contract for more seasons of mediocrity.

So many of you are clearly 'down' on GVE and what he's brought or hasn't to the Jets, with this squad. Which, on his side, is a surprise given he was with the FFA NTs program a little while, AIS/U17s infact, like Edwards, but obviously not there long enough or didn't pick up same rate as Edwards and some others?

Infact is GVE on his Pro Licence or still working on it? That can make a difference apparently as we've seen how Arnie, Farina and others have improved since achieving their Pro Licence.

Anyway, given how down you are - clearly many think he may not last the season - so, from within the Jets coaching ranks, who would be 'the best' candidate to come in, either via caretaker role and/or replace GVE proper?

Craig Deans has been with the coaching staff for yonks. The NYL team since it's inception till 2010, where he's been an assistant on the senior coaching staff since, essentially. Have any of you seen how Deans' teams play? Either the NYL teams under his reign or during when he was 'interim' Jets coach circa 2011? Anybody know what level qualification he holds? I presume ATLEAST 'A level' by now, though I have a feeling he's Pro Licence for some reason, given how 'relatively long he's been about the coaching game, but is still a young coach who came up through this new/reforms generation?

And there's Clayton Zane, who's the present NYL coach. He's only been NYL coach since last season and probably would be a grand mistake to elevate him soo early. But it wouldn't be the first time, see how soon Aloisi was promoted to a senior role down Heart way, straight from the NYL team! Though unlike Aloisi, he's got 'atleast' two season of coaching experience, including coaching the W-League side, the season before. He's a quite promising coaching prospect it seems, given his interesting playing experience and even connections overseas apparently? I presume he's still earning his badges, he may be A-Level already and working on his Pro Licence?

So, a Deans with Zane as his new assistant, combo?

Would be champion to see either coaching the club, especially Zane, as he's a Newcastle boy and had a very promising playing career till it was sadly cut very short by injury! So to see him become a successful coach at A-League level and beyond may be very satisfying!

Devere would be a pretty decent signing he probably doesnt want to ruin his career by playing under GVE though.

Dont want Wilkinson and dont rate Mckain so not really cut up about that.. Time is running out for GVE to sign his experienced central defender though

3 players were Alex wilkinson, Luke devere and Jon mckain. All 3 rejected the Jets offer...

With the penultimate round of the Northern NSW State League competitions taking place this weekend, newcastlejets.com.au examines how the Club’s Emerging Jets teams are faring during their inaugural season in the competition.

U18 Emerging Jets Boys (2nd)
Playing in the NBN State League U23s, the U18 Emerging Jets Boys currently sit in second spot on the ladder, just one point behind competition leaders Edgeworth Eagles.

They have nine wins, five draws and only two losses this season, giving them a goal difference of +18.

After playing out a 1-1 draw with Edgeworth last weekend, the Jets take on Broadmeadow Magic at Wanderers Oval on Saturday afternoon.

U16 Emerging Jets Boys (5th)
Playing in the NBN State League U19s competition, the U16 Emerging Jets Boys sit in fifth place, with a two point buffer back to sixth-placed South Cardiff FC.

They boast a record of nine wins and six losses, with a goal difference of +16.

The Jets have a chance to leapfrog Broadmeadow Magic into fourth place when the two sides meet tomorrow afternoon.

U15 Emerging Jets Boys (6th)
Playing in the NBN State League U17s competition, the U15 Emerging Jets Boys sit in sixth place, six points behind the fifth-placed Broadmeadow Magic, but with a game in hand.
