Yeah both players have been at those clubs for a while this season. Van schip is the Melbourne Hearts coaches son.

BLUES AND EAGLES SHARE THE SPOILS

Richmond returned to the top of the VPL ladder and at the same time severely dented South Melbourne FC’s finals aspirations after coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at John Cain Memorial Park on Sunday afternoon. A wonder strike from Michael Ferrante earned the Eagles a point in a match where they had been outclassed for the vast majority of the 90 minutes.
South started the match on fire and almost opened the scoring in the first few minutes when Joe Keenan beat goalkeeper Stjepan Gal in a foot race to the ball but hit the post instead of the back of the net. South were clearly dominating and got the goal they deserved on 15 minutes when Fernando De Moraes put away the loose ball after Gal had made a save off Marinos Gasparis. The goal put the South midfielder into outright tenth position on South’s all-time leading League goal scorers list.
Steven O’Dor was celebrating his 100th League match for South and the centre-half marked the occasion in the best way possible by heading in South’s second for the afternoon ten minutes before halftime. Keenan’s in-swinging corner was perfectly placed for O’Dor to beat a flapping Gal to the ball and head into the empty goal. The 2-0 lead was more than what South deserved after a dominant first half in which Richmond was lucky not to be at least three or four goals down.
South continued its dominance after the break and had two glorious chances to finish the game off; however it was unable to do so as the Eagles just managed to hold on. Richmond pulled a goal back midway through the second half in controversial circumstances, after Keenan looked to have been fouled in South’s attack. However despite the pleas for a free kick, play was continued and as a result Richmond won possession, took the ball down the field to the waiting Daniel Visevic who found time and space to put the ball past South’s unlucky goalkeeper Peter Zois.
Richmond could sense South’s vulnerability and punished the home side again when Ferrante gained possession outside the area and let fly with an unstoppable shot that smashed into the back of the net. Despite being outclassed for so long, the Eagles showed exactly why they were the League leaders as they had somehow clawed their way back into the match and ultimately won a point. Had it not been for some Zois saves late in the match, Richmond could have very well won the game but instead were more than happy to settle for a draw.
South must win its two remaining matches and hope that other results fall favourably in order to have any chance of playing finals football in 2010. The first of those huge matches is against Oakleigh Cannons at Jack Edwards Reserve on Friday night.

South Melbourne and Richmond have shared the spoils in their Round 20 Alanic Victorian Premier League clash.

Richmond were facing a 2-0 deficit in the 68th minute, until two goals in ten minutes allowed them to salvage a point, placing them back to the top of the Alanic Victoria Premier League table.

South Melbourne started well, asserting an early dominance in midfield, ensuring that the first half would be played on their terms.

Fernando De Moraes came close to opening the scoring in the seventh minute with a terrific effort from distance, which flew just wide of the post.

Soon after, De Moraes opened the scoring for the home side in the 14th minute. Stjepan Gal did well to keep out two consecutive shots from Carl Recchia, but he couldn’t deal with De Moraes’ shot, pouncing on the rebound for the goal.

South’s dominance continued, producing a high level of traffic through their attacking half.

Richmond’s first genuine opportunity of the match came in the 21st minute, when Andrew Viola got his head onto a cross from the left, putting it across the face of goal.

Michael Ferrante’s had a great opportunity in the 29th minute, but also failed to put it on target.

South Melbourne scored a second in the 35th minute when a Joseph Keenan free kick found Steven O’Dor in the six-yard box. O’Dor had no trouble finishing, heading it into the back of the net from close range.

Just as the half drew to an end, a substantial hailstorm struck John Cain Memorial Park. Conditions were made worse by gale-force winds, making it extremely difficult for the players out on the pitch.

South Melbourne almost scored a third in injury time. Fernando De Moraes unloaded a shot from outside the box, which was met with a healthy deflection. The sudden change in direction left Stjepan Gal flat-footed on his line. Gal could only watch as the ball travelled only inches past the post.

South Melbourne came out firing in the second half, going close to a third just 90 seconds after the break. Joseph Keenan swung a perfect ball into the six-yard box, but De Moraes misjudged the ball, and couldn’t get a touch on the goalmouth.

South Melbourne continued to threaten, playing countless balls into the box on the counter attack, but they were wasteful, squandering multiple chances in the ten minutes following half time.

Keenan and De Moraes’ pressure up front continued, making life extremely difficult for the Richmond back four.

South Melbourne suffered a major blow in the 65th minute, when goal scorer Fernando De Moraes was stretchered from the park after suffering an injury in midfield, replaced by Kyle Joryeff.

Richmond pulled a goal back in the 68th minute, capitalising on their immediate pressure on South Melbourne following the stoppage. The goal was magnificent, with Daniel Visevic taking the honours. Visevic intelligently played a one-two on the edge of the box, before running in for a cool finish to the bottom corner.

South Melbourne stopped attacking and began to draw themselves out of the contest.

They paid the price, with Richmond equalising in the 78th minute, scoring two goals in ten minutes. This time it was Michael Ferrante, who unleashed a vicious strike from 30 yards out from goal, smashing it into the back of the net and giving Peter Zois no chance.

Ferrante was beginning to run rings around the South Melbourne defence, as the late South Melbourne slump continued.

Richmond should have scored the winner in the 84th minute when a Davey van ‘t Schip cross into the area bounced across the face of the goal, missing Jesse Krncevic by only a few inches.

South Melbourne dropped their guard in the last 30 minutes and allowed Richmond to dominate proceedings, dropping what looked like to be a certain three points, and a possible late push for a finals birth.

The draw now virtually ends any hope South Melbourne had of playing finals football, while on the other hand it was enough to allow Richmond to take back top spot, one point clear of Hume City.

This Friday night South Melbourne travel to Jack Edwards Reserve to face an out of form Oakleigh Cannons. Richmond are also in action this Friday night, facing Altona Magic at Kevin Bartlett Reserve.
