Granville District Soccer Association matches abandoned
by Steven Deare

THREE abandoned matches have marred the final round of the Granville District Soccer Association before its finals series this weekend.

Aggressive outbursts at Greystanes, Girraween and Baulkham Hills forced referees to abandon the matches and have put some teams’ finals places in jeopardy.

Granville general manager Michael Briggs said it was “out of character” to have three matches abandoned in one round.

Two of the matches were in the same competition, Senior 1.

One of those was between Greystanes and Auburn District at Bathurst St Park, Greystanes.

Briggs said the incident involved “a lot of tension and aggression”.

“A team official got a bit over-reactive, along with a few players,” he said. “Luckily that club’s executive committee were in attendance and attended to the disturbance.”

Auburn District was also involved in the abandoned over-35 years division 3 match against Baulkham Hills at Ted Horwood Reserve.

Briggs said one player “went ballistic” and delivered a “verbal spray to all and sundry”, but didn’t harm anyone. Granville has discussed the incidents with Auburn and Briggs said he was satisfied with its response.

The other abandoned match in Senior 1 was between Toongabbie and Granville Kewpies at Girraween Park. Briggs was still waiting for a report from the match.

The incidents will delay the finals scheduling for those competitions because Granville must allow for judiciary hearings.
