Quote:Cricket battles for sponsors BRETT STUBBS | August 02, 2012 12.01am TASMANIA'S two biggest sporting brands remain sponsorless as their seasons fast approach. Cricket Tasmania is on the hunt for naming-rights sponsors for the Tasmanian Tigers and the Hobart Hurricanes, putting a $600,000 hole in its budget for the upcoming season. Sponsorship of the Tigers, who play in two competitions - the Sheffield Shield and the Ryobi One-Day Cup - would cost between $250,000 to $300,000, while it would be a similar cost to sponsor the Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. The Hurricanes are chasing minor sponsors as well, Cricket Tasmania chief executive David Johnston said, as all last year's deals were one-year contracts. "We are budgeted to get a sponsor so we are out actively looking within Tasmania and interstate as well and we've got some leads," Johnston said. "We are reasonably confident we'll get a sponsor for this season." National accounting firm PKF sponsored the Tigers and the Hurricanes last season, but ended its five-year association with CT in May. Johnston said while he remained confident a sponsor would be found, emergency plans were being prepared just in case. "That would be something we would have to look at and reassess our budgets," he said. "I'm not saying it would put any pressure on programs. There may be some cross savings we can put in place, we may be able to carry that for a year with the prospect of getting a sponsorship the second year if we didn't but we are still hopeful of getting a sponsor for this season." A second draft of the domestic roster has been sent to the states. Although it is yet to be locked in, it appears the Tigers' first three Shield games will be on the road, starting with an away game against NSW at Bankstown. The Shield match against the Blues is scheduled for late September - the week leading into the AFL grand final - to make room for the extended Big Bash League over the Christmas-New Year period. http://www.themercury.com.au/article/2012/08/02/350981_sport-news.html

Quote: As Cricket Aust targets female fans, stars told ‘sledging bad, charities good’ Breaking NewsAugust 8, 2012 As Cricket Aust targets female fans, stars told ‘sledging bad, charities good’ by Tony Harper Australia’s cricket stars have been told that the national body wants them to help attract more females to the game, as they had their annual briefing from Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland today. Sutherland spoke to elite players at their camp in Darwin about strategic goals for the summer ahead and encouraged them to get behind their efforts to increase fan engagement and social media interaction. “James was intending to remind the players of the reason we’re here – it’s about engaging the public,” CA’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Peter Young told SBI ahead of the briefing. “He was going to emphasise some of the strategic priorities for the next 12 months and that includes, in a formal sense, to make it clear that females in cricket is a priority. Cricket still tends to be male. If you look at the Channel Nine or venues audience it’s still 65-35, so that’s why it’s a priority.” CA research shows that females, in particular, are turned off by sledging. “We know that the public likes the players playing hard but fair,” Young said. “The public is very comfortable with ruthless on-field competition as long as it’s fair. “They don’t want athletes to be namby pamby cucumber sandwich munchers. They are happy for them to take no prisoners, but they don’t like sharp practice. “Sledging for example, particularly with women, shows up as something that doesn’t have public support – three bouncers in a row at someone, they are completely comfortable with.” Young said that while the briefings have been a regular part of the yearly routine, the message has been refined. “We are getting far more explicit with research these days,” he said. “We know, for example, that the public responds really well to the charity projects that cricketers do such as the McGrath and Ponting Foundations, and support for Movember. When we go to the public and say ‘what do you like about cricket’, that rates highly.” Sutherland also addressed the priority of engaging kids and the importance of the successful Big Bash League to CA. CA has been promoting the use of social media engagement for several years and many embraced it during last summer’s BBL series. CA sent a study group to the US after that. “The Americans get fan engagement big time and we’re still on a learning curve in Australian cricket,” Young said. “We’ve spent a lot of time with the players saying ‘look, we’re in the entertainment business’. We talk about a concept called coming out from behind the helmet. That’s one of the things James is talking to players about today. “Let the public see a little bit of who you are. We encourage players to use social media and you will see things such as more autograph signing, throwing balls into the crowd after play. “In Darwin this week, community engagement is part of it, with players going out to visit the Tiwi Islands. “In those areas, America is far better at than us; big sport combines athletics excellence with leading edge entertainment.” Young acknowledged there was some risk involved in pushing players to make wider use of Twitter and Facebook but considered it worth taking. “We continually reinforce to players that social media is fabulous and a great way to interact but it’s a public place and all the disciplines of being in a public place apply,” said Young. “By and large we haven’t had problems. Every now and again something untoward happens but what I said to James when we set out was ‘from time to time we’re going to have a bad day, let’s not let the isolated bad day put us off the other 364 good days a year when it’s empowering players and fans to have a relationship with each other’.” http://sportbizinsider.com.au/news/category/sponsorship-and-marketing/as-cricket-aust-targets-female-fans-stars-told-sledging-bad-charities-good/

Renegades eager to lure PietersenHe's on the outer with England's national side, but Melbourne Renegades believe master blaster Kevin Pietersen would be a perfect fit for their own fledgling group of emerging Twenty20 stars. World Twenty20: Two-Screen Experience BAN v NZL Sep 21, 8pm (EST), FS2HD + Match Centre Renegades chief executive Stuart Coventry will fly to Sri Lanka next week in a bid to meet Pietersen and lure him to Melbourne for the upcoming KFC T20 Big Bash League season. Sydney Sixers are also in the hunt for the talented 32-year-old, who is commentating at the T20 World Cup instead of playing after his international career hit the skids following his recent texting controversy. During last month's Test between England and South Africa, Pietersen allegedly sent derogatory texts about then-England captain Andrew Strauss to players on the opposition side. But despite the fallout from that, Coventry believed Pietersen would bring important leadership qualities to a young Renegades outfit. "I think he could add a lot to what our team requires from a leadership point of view," Coventry said. Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar. Related Content Texts: Pietersen left out of India tour + 9 Confident: We don't need Pietersen: Cook + 30 End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar. "He's a big-game player. He's been there and done that as a cricketer. "He's one of the greatest T20 players around the world. "We've got a fantastic group of guys at the moment. Kevin could fit in very well from a cultural aspect and we could really create a solid environment for him to play good, solid T20 cricket. "We've gone through a significant list transformation after being favourites last year and not having success. "We feel we've got a team with a lot of up and comers that can have that success." Pietersen boasts an average of 37.93 over 36 T20 appearances for England, while he also starred on the international stage in 88 Tests and 127 one-dayers. The powerful right-hander would play alongside legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan at the Renegades should he choose to join them. It would also set up an enticing derby against the Shane Warne-led Melbourne Stars, with the two teams scheduled to face off at Etihad Stadium on December 7. Quote:One-day cricket crowds plummet October 25, 2012 - 5:46PM Chloe Saltau Cricket Australia's new board has been confronted with figures revealing it faces a huge challenge to arrest an alarming decline in one-day crowds before it hosts the 2015 World Cup. On the day Cricket Australia moved beyond its antiquated delegate system by adopting a sleek, semi-independent board, chief executive James Sutherland presented research illustrating some of the challenges facing the game. Among them is the squeeze on attendances for ODIs in Australia. Although overall attendances have grown over the past decade, the rise of domestic and international Twenty20 cricket has coincided with a dramatic decline in ODI crowds, from a total of 456,254 for the summer of 1999-2000 to 251,916 last season. The attendances were measured every four years, when major drawcard India toured, and the figures confirmed the seductive power of the shortest format. The fall in ODI crowds was more than offset by growth for Twenty20 internationals and the introduction of the domestic Big Bash League, and Sutherland said TV ratings for one-day cricket remained strong. But he also emphasised the need to act to arrest the trend before the World Cup is staged in Australia and New Zealand three years from now. "My personal view is we are in a stage of transition," Sutherland said after CA's annual general meeting. "Cricket is very fortunate to have three formats, and all our research shows all three are very popular. The new kid on the block is Twenty20 and it's inevitable there is a bit of shuffling of the deck chairs in terms of that popularity. We have seen one-day cricket somewhat affected by that. "We support one-day cricket. We have a World Cup here in 2015 and we're looking forward to that, but we also believe there is an opportunity to distinguish one-day cricket a bit more, to improve that fan experience and improve the format of the game. "We'll do lots of things here in Australia to support that but we're also working at ICC level to ensure the ICC is focused on development in that regard as well." Research also showed average TV audiences for Twenty20 internationals in Australia had rocketed beyond 1.4 million, compared with 858,000 for Tests and 897,000 for ODIs. Overall, CA said, cricket had the highest average TV audience for any sport in 2012. Read more: http://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/oneday-cricket-crowds-plummet-20121025-287wh.html#ixzz2AIt1BxBa

Quote:Nine eyes day-night Test deal Chloe Saltau Published: October 31, 2012 - 5:54PM CHANNEL Nine is salivating at the prospect of staging day-night Tests, and will push for the floodlit fixtures to be part of the next media rights deal. Cricket Australia will hold informal talks with Nine in Brisbane next week and the network's head of sport Steve Crawley indicated day-night Tests would be on the agenda after the ICC gave them its imprimatur. Competing boards would decide on playing hours and agree on a brand and ball colour . Crucially, cricket authorities have not reached consensus on a ball - but Nine's enthusiastic backing will add commercial momentum. CA is in an exclusive negotiating period with Nine, with the current deal to expire in March. With competition expected to come from networks Seven and Ten, CA is banking on a significant increase on the previous agreement, which was worth $315 million over seven years. The introduction of day-night Tests would increase the value of the deal. ''I think it's exciting. We always enjoy the Perth Test because it comes back to the eastern states in prime time, and I have always thought it's only a matter of time. I can't see a downside to it from an entertainment point of view,'' Crawley said. ''We'll be starting a Test match [against South Africa] Friday week in Brisbane at a time of year when so many people are at work during the day, and night-time cricket would give us a bigger audience.'' Crawley understands the concept will face resistance from traditionalists, ''but I also salivate at the thought of having Test cricket at night''. ''It will be discussed soon. We always get together with Cricket Australia at the start of the summer and that will happen in Brisbane next week, and you can bet on that being part of informal discussions.'' Nine management would lead more formal talks, ''but as a producer of television I find it exciting. That decision was always going to come because too many people are aware of the commercial realities of sport for it not to come. It's important not to do it properly, work out the right games and the right venues, but I just know it's going to happen and we will get it right.'' Crawley believes the Boxing Day Test will remain a daytime fixture because of its rich tradition, and because its timing ensures healthy audiences at the MCG and on TV. South Australian Cricket Association chief executive Keith Bradshaw, a strong advocate of day-night Tests in his previous role at the Marylebone Cricket Club, said the ICC's ruling presented a chance to consider floodlit Tests in cases where crowds needed boosting. ''You wouldn't do it against England or South Africa or India, but you might look at it for some of the less popular Test matches,'' he said. ''The absolute imperative would be that we ensure we maintain the integrity of the game.'' MCC worked with ball manufacturers to develop a pink ball that was tried out with success in county games in Abu Dhabi and stood out against white clothes. ''We felt we had delivered the technology in terms of the ball, that we could maintain the balance between bat and ball. I see this is a significant move, that the ICC has accepted the possibility of day-night Test cricket,'' Bradshaw said. CA boss James Sutherland, a long-time advocate of day-night Tests, cautioned that the first day-night Test could still be some way off. ''Finding a Test ball that is as easily visible in the day as it is at night is still a technical work in progress that the ICC is now leading and it has not yet been possible to predict when such a ball might be available.'' Ed Cowan, Michael Clarke, and Michael Hussey. Take 3 very well deserved bows, and pat on the back and a round of applause. First test has been fantastic from a batting perspective. Re-cap:
Day 1: Proteas win toss; elect two bat. At the end of the day South Africa were 2/255. Amla 90*, JH Kallis 84* Day 2: Washed Out - rain. Day 3: South Africa dec. at 8/450. Khallis having made 147 & Amla 104. Australia get sent into bat, at end of days play reeling @ 3/111, Michael Clarke having came in @ 3/44 Day 4: Michael Clarke goes on to be 211* at stumps, Cowan r/out for 136, making a maiden century. Michael Hussey on 86* at stumps. Michael Clarke reaching 1,000 test runs for the 2012 calendar year a couple of overs before the end of the days play; his 3rd double century of the year following his triple and double against India last series. What a great test match from a batting perspective. And it's not exactly the most batter friendly pitch in the world, either. It's got something in it for both teams. Morne Morkel for the South Africans has been very unlucky. Must have beaten Hussey's bat by the width of a bees dick about 20 times during the day, then Hussey or Clark will just edge one through the gap between 2nd slip and Gulley. Tomorrow going to be exciting. I think Australia could get the win here, honestly don't think South Africa expected Australia to not only chase down 450 with a days play washed out, but to be ahead by the close of the 4th day.

I think its a batsmans wicket, and if thats the case, no chance of bowling out the SA lot.
Also depends on how much of a lead they build.

Australia declared this morning at 5/527. Michael Clarke unbeaten on 259 n/o. He's on fucking fire with the bat. Michael Hussey got to his ton before losing his wicket on 100. Wade made a 19 before the deceleration. Currently South Africa are 1/12 with Peterson losing his wicket on 5. If we can get Amla and/or Smith out soon, we're in with a real crack. Khallis might prove a hanful though.

Im so bloody nervous. If Aus get these wickets then they could be chasing a small total. Pity Duminy is out, would have added to the batting line up.

Got himself a pair of ducks in this test. Will be surprised if the selectors go with him for the Perth test. Ponting now needs a good score of 50 or more. Duck in the Brisbane Test IIRC and only made 4 the other innings.
