I was looking for a video of Ellyse Perry bowling. I still haven't found what I wanted.

I was keen to look at her bowling action, because I read somewhere recently like Cricinfo that of cricketers of both genders she has a copybook action more than almost anyone.

Even though I haven't found what I wanted, the technical detail in bowling fast seems almost impossible to get it all right. The amount of technical detail that she has to consider is phenomenal in bowling.

I've watched Sane Warne give these sorts of presentations on wrist spin. The greatest difficulty seeming to be able to bowl the googly and flipper, but it seems easier than pace bowling. I think I can bowl all leg spin variations, leg break, top spinner and googly, apart from the flipper, but swinging the ball seems to be so difficult.

I think it is why I'm such a cricket fan. I've been pretty successful in most sports I've played, but the skills required in cricket to play at the top level seem to be so difficult to acquire.

One test wonder Andy Ganteaume dies at age 95

What was unique about AG Ganteaume? He scored 112 in his one and only test innings in test cricket, apart from the fact his name was a homonym to Gautama (better known as "Buddha"), he would achieve this anomaly

Pretty impressive just to be able to bowl the outswinger at all.=d>

Rodney Hogg, former Test fast bowler, who was fast through the air said he only really learnt how to bowl outswingers after finishing his Test bowling career. I wonder if you had had quality coaching, you could've developed an inswinger?

Could you have bowled an off cutter to make the ball go the other way?

Better coaching would no doubt have helped. Off cutters are generally the easiest to bowl, my slower ball is almost an off spinner that pops and turns.

I tried my hand at pace for a while when young but I kept bowling beemers :D

Someone taught me to slow it down a bit, keep my wrist rock still and hold the ball loosely and try prevent the ball from spinning at all

I actually got quite a bit of swing in an unpredictable direction albeit at a very slow pace

When I took up leg spin I kept that ball as a change up. It was amazing how many wickets I got with that ball from people reading me off the pitch rather than the hand

I think I must be the only leggie that bowls a slow motion pace delivery as a variation

I bowl off spin. The one thing I've learned is to try and read the technique and mentality of the batsman. I love bowling a few really loopy ones, then throw in a fast Yorker. Or, if you see the batsman wants to jump out from word go, you bowl a really quick one straight at the off stump. Once the doubt gets in their head they stay in their crease.

The other one I love is the arm ball delivered at the same pace as the off break. The batsman charges down, the ball drifts away and doesn't spin, the batsman misses it and looks like a goose. :d

McCullum just broke Viv Richards' record for fastest test century. Unbelievable batting on a very green pitch.

Pattinson is a muppet for overstepping though

Stoked for McCullum. Couldn't think of a better bloke to score the fastest century. I'm guessing the three quickest Test centuries were by McCullum, Viv and Gilly.

Quite apart from being some of the most exciting batsmen to play the game, just terrific people all round.

If you're interested in the nuances of fast-bowling read Mike Selvey's pieces in the Guardian. They're among the best in the world when it comes to the technical kind of details and explanations which you're interested in.

You should also read the below the line comments. At least half the posters are very well educated on cricket. And a handful have played at a very high level and can retell many interesting cricket stories.

I disagree with Selvey a lot when it comes to the politics of cricket. And sadly English and Australian cricket has become all too politicised in recent years with the ordeals involving players like Michael Clarke and KP. But, as regards, the nuances of fast bowling. Look no further than Selvey.

you're also right that fast bowling is so technical, there's almost no perfect way of doing it.

Mike Selvey recommends looking at the statue of Dennis Lillee outside the MCG if you want to get an idea of the correct leap a bowler should have for arriving at the crease.

Then it's all about the finest angles. Apparently, Sir Richard Hadlee used to get his slip to signal to him to indicate that he had gotten his seam position absolutely spot on. Bearing in mind this is before his run up, so the two are standing over 50m apart.

Hadlee was all about that kind of precision. It's why he, along with Malcolm Marshall, were the two greatest fast bowlers ever. Glenn McGrath being third, imo.

But yeah, no perfect way of doing it. Michael Holding believes that Jeff Thompson had the best action he ever saw. The most natural. And by God did he push it, through.

Then the amount in which you cock the wrist is also ever so important. That's how swing is generated. A big criticism of Australian bowlers in recent years was the appalling wrist positions which some of them had which meant no swing.

I've never been a fast bowler. But I'm also told that to get the ball to swing the bowler can't just float it up there, they need to bang it in a bit (but obviously on a full-ish length).

Then some actions will be more conducive to seam than to swing. And some wickets will be more conducive to seam than to swing. So it can be horses for courses a bit.

definitely a game changer

odd game now. NZ 1st innings probably puts them 20 runs ahead of the game all things being equal (lets see how the pitch plays) but they scored them so quickly that Australia could literally bat for 8 sessions if they are good enough though that would be a spectacular batting effort.
Without weather a draw is pretty much out of the equation you would think

Australia losing an earliesh wicket puts NZ slightly ahead again. Regardless of how the day ends you would have to say NZ won the day

Didn't get to see any of today's play due to coaching and playing commitments of my own, but congrats to McCullum on what must've been a delightful knock.

On a personal note I probably bowled the best I have in my life for zero reward, 0-32 off 17 (5 maidens), as we conceded 280 in 80.

He got a bit lucky, was caught on 39 but called back for a no-ball, and also edged a few into gaps, but overall it was a great innings. Real captain's knock for NZ.

Pretty even first day, hopefully the batting conditions are good enough tomorrow to help us get a lead.

good work so far from burns. I wonder if Marsh should be replaced by maxwell as an all rounder. He does get decent penetration with the ball if he can average 33 with the bat I guess we have a pretty good side especially since lyon has come good

We may finally have a decent team. Being competitive in new zealand isn't exactly easy. In NZ's first innings they exposed a weakness in our bowling in that we struggle to bowl well in the short form so attacking our bowlers isn't a bad strategy. Having starc in the team would alleviate that (as well as providing footmarks for lyon. Hazelwood starc and siddle/pattinson/bird are our best pace attack maybe

We don't need a second spinner, except in India.

The top 5 are in huge form so it doesn't matter if Mitchell Marsh is struggling. He is a good enough bowler to be in the team, and he gives the side great balance. Young all rounders rarely fire with both bat and ball at the same time, one department sometimes takes longer to develop than the other. We just need to be patient.

Faulkner is a far better all-rounder option than Marsh. I suspect the fact that Mitch Marsh's father is Geoff has done him huge favours.

Faulkner is a far better bowler with a far better strike rate and more guile. Marsh is probably a bit quicker than Faulkner but he's not quick enough for it to merit his place. Faulkner delivers much better results.

As for batting, Marsh is no better with the bat than Faulkner. He has no footwork. He consistently got found out in England owing to his lack of technique. He's just a stand-and-deliver flat track bully. Faulkner is not brilliant with the bat, but he does just as well, has guile to win matches and he has this kind of unshakeable self-belief. The guy is worth his weight in gold to any cricket team.

So for a seam-bowler all-rounder it should be Faulkner. For a spinning all-rounder, it should be Maxwell.

Both Faulkner and Maxwell played county cricket and did very well (albeit Faulkner was in Div 2). But even Faulkner dragged his county up to Div 1, so that's a very good achievement.

Marsh struggled big time in England.

I was mooting Wagner before this series from watching him against Sri Lanka. He was an aggressive bowler with far different body language to the majority of Kiwi bowlers.

Even though Wagner hasn't bowled as fast as he did in previous series, his bouncers and short balls are consistently well directed in the high 130s. He got lift off the pitch.

I'm still surprised that the Kiwis didn't opt for Adam Milne? On current form he must be the fastest, fit bowler in the world. His 145- 151 kph thunderbolts, even if only bowling a few overs would have been difficult to negotiate.

The first session featured some outstanding Test cricket.

The Kiwis lost no wickets. Williamson and Anderson batted well, particularly Williamson. There were some very close decisions made correctly by the umpires according to the action replays.

Pattinson, Hazelwood and Lyon all bowled superbly. They constantly put both batsmen under pressure.=d>

Bird's bowling has been quite a disappointment in the series. Unless injury occurs in the bowlers above him, I think he is finished as a Test cricketer. There are also a plethora of pace bowlers looking reasonable in Shield cricket who would probably be found wanting at Test level.

Outside Pattinson, Hazelwood, Cummmins and Starc, and if Siddle's body can hold up, there are a lot of mediocre pace bowlers in Australia who are taking too many wickets at Shield level.

Outside Lyon, apart from Ahmed, there are no reasonable spinning prospects either, given the wickets in Australia.

Must admit I haven't seen Bollinger and Abbott play the long form of cricket lately, or Coulter-Nile.

Australia probably were 2 sessions ahead at the start of the day before NZ won 2 sessions.

Usually 200 runs to chase on the last day is even stevens but the pitch is a little young. I would say Australia has a roughly 3/4 chance

Definitely egg on my face.#-o

I'm very happy though. Bird plays for Tasmania. I'd just left the cricket at the end of the first session to go to the beach for a few hours . When I got back just before tea, Bird had taken 3 wickets.=d>

I've really enjoyed these two Tests in NZ.

Love watching GOAT bowl. He didn't pick up any wickets today, but piled the pressure on. He bowled so many accurate balls the batters had to play, with very little time between balls. This requires great concentration from opposition batters. GOAT is bowling with a lot of drift and loop in the air, even though the ball didn't spin much.

Pattinson bowled some high quality balls at great speed, some in the high 140s. He was reversing it too.

Kane Williamson is a good batsman to watch too, as is Usman Kawaja. Has anyone else noted when attacking against the short ball, Williamson and Kawaja get back to play the shot on the back foot, like Ricky Ponting.

On the other hand, Voges and Marsh look a bit awkward, playing hooks and pulls off the front foot.

I was a front foot puller particularly early in the innings. Early on its much more dangerous to face a full ball

I would also pull a wide delivery through mid off or cover rather than try to cut it. I found I had better control and it was less likely to go in the air

I've seen some batters playing at a high level do what you did - preferring to hook or pull balls that could've been cut.

I was a front foot puller particularly early in the innings. Early on its much more dangerous to face a full ball

I would also pull a wide delivery through mid off or cover rather than try to cut it. I found I had better control and it was less likely to go in the air
