Just bringing this over the page for those that may have missed it, this is the man behind the number three song on the Hottest 100 doing his cover of the number two song (Lonely Boy) which a few here seem to acknowledge as having heard and/or liked. I'm interested to know what you think of Corby's cover? I think I almost prefer it but thats just me and thats after a lot of listens.

That album was so well mastered and the dynamic on Rooftops is excellent. It's become one of my reference albums for sound quality.

It's a bit whiny isn't it?

I don't think it's my cup of tea and i'm not sure how it compares to NIN but then NIN will always be the downward Spiral to me.

I think i'll leave this lot in the shop and see if they have any cheap Vandals records instead.

There are certain tracks that have a familiar kind of The Fragile feel to them.

Have you checked out KillswitchEngage.com today? We’re not sure how long it’s been there, but as of the time this article is being published there’s a splash screen up with a photo of the band — including original lead singer Jesse Leach. While the band has yet to release a statement via their website, Facebook page, press release or any other medium, a photo is worth 1,000 words and we can’t think of any other possible way this could be construed.

After Howard Jones’ departure on January 4th, asking Leach back into the band seemed like only logical course of action; 3rd vocalists never work out, and duh, it just makes sense given all the history and Leach’s recent relationship with the other band members. Welcome back, Jesse!

Sir Paul - all his yesterdays

by: Simon Plant From: Herald Sun February 04, 2012 12:00AM

FOR Sir Paul McCartney, music was about the good times. And that's the formula for his new album.

HE saunters into the room like the showman he is - with a little bow and a flick of his jacket, as if he's about to roll up his sleeves and rip into Can't Buy Me Love. But Sir Paul McCartney, 69, is not strapping on his famous left-handed Hofner bass guitar today.

The former Beatle is in business mode, spruiking his latest solo studio album Kisses On The Bottom to a round table of writers and explaining why he's felt the urge to record music that's even older than he is. Bye, Bye Blackbird, It's Only a Paper Moon, Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive ... what's the story?

"Well, I grew up listening to those songs," he says, his Liverpudlian accent leaning on the letter G. "You know, my dad and his generation played those songs. My Dad (Jim McCartney) used to play the piano at home, particularly on New Years' Eve ... he was the pianist and they'd roll back the carpet and all the ladies would sit around, sipping their rum and blackcurrant. And then, after half an hour of those, they would start singing. So, I heard all those songs - from them - and always grew up loving those songs and associating them with family and good times."

Strolling down memory lane is nothing new for rock artists. Ringo Starr's first solo album, Sentimental Journey (1970), was a collection of old faves. More recently, Rod Stewart and Robbie Williams have been mining the Great American Songbook for all its worth. But Kisses On The Bottom (the title comes from I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself A Letter) is different. For one thing, it includes two new songs (My Valentine, Only Our Hearts) penned in the spirit of the old. For another, it seeks out lesser-known treasures such as My Very Good Friend The Milkman (a Fats Waller novelty number from the 1930s), The Inch Worm (sung by Danny Kaye in the 1950s) and More I Cannot Wish You from Guys and Dolls.

Making this "deeply personal journey into classic American compositions", Sir Paul realised some of his choices connected with "songs me and John (Lennon) based quite a few things on".

Here, There and Everywhere from Revolver (1966) comes to mind, he says, "where we tried to put a little intro on it, like the old songs. They had this thing they used to call the verse, the bit at the beginning of a song that nobody knows which goes into the song they do know ... we were quite influenced by things like that".

The Lennon-McCartney songwriting partnership began in Liverpool in 1957. Huddling with their guitars at McCartney's family home, they scribbled lyrics into school notebooks.

"We had my Dad's era of songs we were listening to," he recalls, "and in John's case, his mother's. Those kind of things brought us together and we would reference those songs as we were writing new songs and combining it with rock and roll."

The pair learnt a lot from Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis. As Tim Riley writes in his book, Tell Me Why: A Beatles Commentary: "Pop completed their young world in ways that television and movies couldn't."

But partial to old-time showbiz, and instinctively romantic, Sir Paul also responded to Cole Porter, Harold Arlen and the Gershwins.

"I just thought their songs were magical," he says, "and as I got to be a songwriter, I thought, 'Wow, its beautiful how they made that'."

Was he ever tempted to record their music?

"Yeah. When we got into the recording world with The Beatles, I thought, 'It'd be nice to do them' but we never got around to it because we were writing Sgt Pepper and The White Album and all our new stuff."

Sir Paul did the next best thing by composing Beatle songs that evoked home and hearth such as When I'm 64 (written when he was 16), Your Mother Should Know and Honey Pie.

"Honey Pie was one that I was writing that definitely harked back to the era of Hollywood."

Fred Astaire style also influenced the look of The Beatles. Sir Paul calls the legendary dancer "a fantastic character ... so elegant" and remembers: "When we were making Sgt Pepper, I had a guy who would make my jackets and I used to say, 'Can you make it like Fred Astaire's?' He figured out that Fred's jackets were cut very close, very slim sleeves, so I wanted one."

Recording Kisses On The Bottom last year, Sir Paul enlisted the help of jazz pianist Diana Krall and her band. And for the first time in his long and winding solo career, he went into the vocal booth (at LA's Capitol Studios) without an instrument. No guitar, no piano.

Kisses On The Bottom is bolstered by rock legends Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder. What was it like working with Wonder again, 30 years after Ebony and Ivory?

"Oh, he's such a genius. Stevie just came to the session, listened to the track (Only Our Hearts), said, 'Can you play it one more time?', listened again, then went to the microphone and started making solos. It was all over in about half an hour. That's talent."

Sir Paul says: "After we finished the album, I suddenly realised that's how we recorded with The Beatles."

Is there another tour in the works? Sir Paul allows an impish grin. "I always say at the end of my concerts, 'See you next time' and I mean it."

Kisses On The Bottom (Universal Music) is out now

San Cisco are fast becoming a favourite of mine and their catchy tunes would go off live so I would love to see them. Matt Corby is phenomenal and Big Scary, Kaiser Chiefs, Bluejuice etc are quality, it's a pretty even quality lineup really, worth the money for sure but I'm tearing through the funds these days.
