New Zealand 26 - 16 England at full time.
Mods, is there any chance of this being stickied for future use? We have a fair contingent of Basketball/Cricket/Rugby/League/AFL fans whom could benefit from a matchday thread.

A handy resource for this thread, join bet365. They have a live stream with multiple channels. It is completely legal (in NZ at least) because they show the things not broadcast in your country (i.e. European Basketball, SPL, Eredivisie, Championship, Tennis, Squash, Cricket (that isn't on tv) etc.
Good quality stream, completely legal and from a legitimate and reputable source.
Usually has multiple channels at once and a bet365 tv schedule.

So can we tell Sri Lanka celebrated their Series Win a little too hard yet?:p
Congrats to Kane Williamson too. 131 on debut in one of the toughest places to debut too.

Absolutely. New Zealand have him and Ryder to thank for reviving our innings at 140-4.
I'm just gunna put it out there, I call a draw.
Also, how classy is Dan Vettori? Goes out and supports Williamson, notching a casual 40 not out on the way. Half our batsmen couldn't score 40 runs in one innings if they tried.

Edited by thewestisland: 7/11/2010 05:26:23 PM It's amazing how much Vettori has turned into an all rounder in the past few years. Averages a touch above 40 in the past 5 years IIRC.

Watching the 3rd place playoff from the WTA tournament in Bali. Kimiko Date Krumm is a machine to still be ranked inside the top 100 at 40.
She's giving Hantuchova a lesson so far too.

Interlagos GP Current Standings - 1. Vettel, 2. Webber, 3. Alonso.
If it stays like this Alonso will lead Webber by just 8 points, with Vettel only 7 points behind his team-mate.
Interesting stuff.

I remember last time or the time before that we played a test against them in NZ we rested players IIRC. Just remember being at the ND v. Wellington game up at home and hearing the updates over the PA, but Southee, Ryder, Gillespie, Watling, Arnel, Franklin, Flynn and quite a few fringe players were playing in the domestic game. Saw Daniel Flynn get 149 in a one-dayer that day :d

Portland 108 - 110 Oklahoma
As for the cricket, Gareth Hopkins ](*,). It's fine with Williamson because he is young and needs to learn, but Hopkins is almost at his use-by date. I am pretty sure we have far better keeper-batsmen running round the domestic scene.
Vettori out, 312-7 ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

NZ all out for 350, India 11-0.
NZ (and Indian) slip fielders as well as batsman Sehwag having difficulty with red signage each side of the sightscreen (long-on and long-off boundaries). Thwarted a good chance for NZ to take an early wicket, and stopped a fairly easy catch in the NZ innings.

Pitch Report:
A few green patches. Wicket isn't as hard as the usual Gabba pitch, ball won't be going on to the bat as quickly. Looking alright for the aussie bowlers,
My tip is on Siddle to do the damage, if Johnson gets the seam straight he will also cause a few headaches.

0006 Strauss has gone from the third ball! Too close to him for cutting and Hussey pouches the catch in the gully. Big send off from the Australian players, gathering round the England skipper and flapping like vultures. Trott next up the ramp - three slips and a gully and a backward-point in... Trott survives the rest of the over... BBC
WICKET! England 0-1 (Strauss c Hussey b Hilfenhaus 0) I am Jack's numbing deja vu: Andrew Strauss has gone third ball! I cannot believe this. Strauss was out on the pull here twice four years ago and now he has gone to another of his favourite shots, the cut, slapping it straight to Hussey in the gully. I cannot believe that. I simply cannot believe that. There was a bit of bounce, but even so, Strauss plays that shot in his sleep. He walks off in shock, and he is not the only one... The Guardian

And the second boundary for Trott, Hilfy dragged it down leg side and got dispatched accordingly

If Trott gets going, he can be a real threat. Cook is the sort of batsman to be there all day, this could be a strong partnership for England

Wicket! Trott b. Watson.
Took his off stump out with a nice full pitched ball. On first glance i think Trott was expecting it to swing away a touch, but it just stayed straight. On second glance it came in a touch off the seam.
Kevin Pietersen in.

Shane Watson into the attack, some talk that he's carrying a niggle as well. Sun out as Watson comes trotting in - leg-side half-bunger and that is hot buttered from Trott, clipping to the square-leg fence. Whacking great wide outside off-stump and Watson looks slightly startled - the expression of a man who has just got into a packed lift at work, looked in the mirror and suddenly realised he has a dried bogey streaked across his face. A suggestion that Trott nicked one off Hilfenhaus earlier but no-one appealed. Odd. TROTT'S GONE! PLAYED ALL AROUND A STRAIGHT ONE!... BBC
Rubbish you can see the movement Watson got out of that one

thought this was a classic on the BBC Live Updates
James in the TMS inbox: "Just finished a long argument with my now ex-girlfriend. Tonight was meant to be a 'Big Conversation' evening about 'Where We're Going'. The phrases 'Can't the cricket wait?', 'Are you just going to listen to the cricket?' and 'So you're telling me the cricket's more important?' ('No', 'Preferably' and 'Yes') were used on multiple occasions." Still, at least I can listen to the cricket all night now.

 Pietersen face-plants in the process of playing a leg glance for 4
And we have lunch on Day 1, England are 2/86.
Watson and Hilfenhaus probably the pick of the aussie bowlers. Doherty has done well, same with Siddle. Johnson hasn't done anything, but he's only bowled a couple of overs over 2 spells.
I'm off to do a uni assignment now ](*,)

HATTRICK!!!!!!!!! SIDDLE!!!! LBW
Going for the challenge though, Broard might have clipped it with the bat
Decision: hit him on the big toe, on the full infont of middle stump. Hattrick time.

Oooo Clarkey. Mighty close. Good to see Anderson doing well. One of my favourite cricketers as my bowling action is modelled on his action.

Got a good feelig about Hussey today. Just needs someone to hang in there with him.
If Marcus North doesn't get dropped for the 2nd test someone needs to get fucking lynched.

So it seems bad light has stopped play for the moment, just as England take the new ball.
Australia 5/220 Hussey 81* Haddin 22*

Great innings from this partnership, struggled through the first hour but are now putting some pressure back on a seemingly self destructing England

Really need to lay the boot in now. Lead is 104
This is now also the greatest ever 6th wicket partnership at the Gabba.

This is a brilliant partnership by Hussey & Haddin, very impressed with the way they have been attacking the English bowlers - reminds me of our mid 90s top order.

Hussey now 10 runs away from a new test match high score. Partnership at 289

Watch him just come in and try and smash his way through the attack. I think he'd have instructions now to just go for it. We've got a lead of 190 just try and score quickly now.

Anyone catch the All Blacks game this morning? I'm pretty biased but the referee was crooked beyond doubt. Funny thing is that we were still superior.

A draw is the only result I can see here because England won't declare tomorrow. The only way well get a result is if Australia picks up 9 unbelievably quick wickets tomorrow.

About right by Englang IMO. Australia have to bat, and the only thing they can do, is not lose wickets. They don't realistically have a chance to win, so they just have to survive, and England can just attack and have a good session in the field.

First ball of the day is a stark contrast from yesterday, Strauss placing one into the gap for a quick single.
3rd ball in, Dougie brings one back in to Strauss and takes his Off-stump bail. Looking at the reply, Strauss pre-meditated the leave, ball kept its line. Poor leave.

So England 4/551 at stumps due to a rain delay with no play at all since tea.
This will probably force Strauss into a declraration earlier than he would have liked to but still can't see anything but an England win tbh. Going to need some Adelaide 06 heroics to get anything out of this.

I don't want to be reactionary, but surely Ponting's spot has to be in question as much as Clarke, North and the rest of our failing batsmen.

Ponting and Clarke are pretty much safe no matter what happens. It's North who is gone imo if he doesn't get at the very least 50.

Yeah, both Clarke and Ponting have shown that they have the ability to come back from this. Plus coming into this series they were 2 of our more inform batsmen.

Some good news for Australia. This from the Bureau of Meteorology, South Australia Regional Office "Top priority for immediate broadcast. Severe thunderstorm warning for flash flooding, damaging wind and large hailstones. For people in the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges, Yorke Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands, Upper South East, Lower South East and parts of the Eastern Eyre Peninsula and Northeast Pastoral districts." Probably won't be playing through that then...

Just hoping that the centurion Marcus North turns up. Problem is we just don't know which North will turn up. Have to say though if there's 1 guy you want at the crease in a time like this is Mike Hussey.

i wanna know why when at times i've changed over to the English over the past 6 years and visa versa they've always fucking lost, and the same with Australia 05-Australia 06/07-England 09-Australia 10-Australia
bring back the 02/03 series with Nasser and Steve

Australia is just going to to back to the 80's when we couldn't win a test. A long way back from here.

What a career renaissance from Hussey. Criticised so much before the series, but has mad 50+ in every innings so far.
Him and Haddin the only bright spots of the series imo.

So Haddin picks up another 50 for the series, with Johnson on 21. Need Johnson to turn this start into a big score.

At least there's plenty of time left, if they can clean up Australia by the end of today, we'll have two full days to chase down a total however big or small.

True, but to me, that's just over ruling the original rules of cricket. Doesn't matter how much of the ball is hitting the stumps, if it's hitting the stumps, it's out. Those should be given IMO.

True, I haven't seen a lot of his batting, but for a guy who bats at 4 in first class cricket, he has looked extremely uncomfortable and uncharacteristically shaky early on in his innings in this test match (for a first class #4).

and welcome to Day 4 where Australia attempt to level the series, if you think that this day is going to be over and done with, don't, Australia will win but as the Guardian writes Quote:The reason I mention it, other than to boost my own sense of self-worth, is that I went on to discuss the Headingley Test of the 2009 Ashes. England were 1-0 up then as well, and knew they were only a win away from a series victory. They were even worse in that match than they have been in this one, conceding 445 after being bowled out for 102. By the end of the second day they were, uncannily, 82-5 (as opposed to their current 81-5) and still trailed by 261. The game was up. But the next morning Andy Flower called a team meeting. "This match is lost," he told the players. "But the preparation for the next Test starts now." Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann put on 108 runs in 12.3 overs. They tucked into Stuart Clark, who had tormented England in the first innings, with particular relish and they ended up with a score of 263, losing by an innings and 80 runs. But the tone for the next Test was set. They had showed that they would not wilt just because they had endured two bad days in a row. And of course you don't need me to tell you what happened at the Oval ten days later.

When the camera panned across the players for the anthems just then, I could't Clarke see cos the 'milo kid' standing in front of him was taller when all the other kids were about half the size of the players

100-3, 2-3, 134-3, 28-3, 64-3 and 37-3
That's been the scores this series, when Hussey has come to the crease.

Another top order fail by Australia. Can we drop Ponting already? Why is he even playing? His average this series is 19 and we're playing him injured? ](*,)

Pakistan 70-6 in the t20 against NZ after ten overs.
Southee got a hat trick and is 8-5 off 3 overs \:d/
Worth mentioning that those five wickets were in the space of eight deliveries.

Australian selectors are picking him purely on reputation when the right thing to do is rest him, let him recover from his injury so he can play in Sydney and bring in someone who has an average a little higher than fucking 19!

If he's properly injured he wouldn't be playing, he was never really a serious doubt for this match and was fine in the nets in the lead up, he's fit to play no doubt.

He's not injured, he trained all week, passed a fitness test and was fine. His hand didn't bother him at all during his innings. But yes, he is out of form. But who do you pick to replace him? Do you seriously suggest taking a risk on a debutant at 1-1 in an ashes series, where every test is a must win? Fact of the matter is, even out of form, Ponting is still more likely to succeed than a debutant is. Same with Clarke.

It wouldn't be an issue if the Australian selectors occasionally blooded new players instead of plodding on with the same old selections come rain, hail or shine.
You've got a littany of talent across the country that could and would be in better form than Ponting if they'd been given a chance. As I said, he's not playing well and no player in the Australian line-up should be untouchable.

Cricket is not like football in the sense that international teams can just blood youngsters and rotate the team whenever they like.

He's not untouchable, but at the same time, he deserves more than 3 tests of bad form. I mean shit, if we dropped every player who had a couple of bad tests in a row, Mike Hussey wouldn't be playing this series, and England would be 3-0 up.
Ponting deserves the chance to prove he regain form, and deserves more than 3 tests to do so.

If four bad innings aren't enough to condemn him, then one good innings shouldn't be enough to save him.

I still don't think there's any justification in keeping him in the team when he clearly isn't playing up to the standard. The standard this series is exceptionally low and he's still failing to achieve it.

Fuck, are we so desperate to win one game against fucking Pakistan that we can't blood one or two players so that they've got experience, should they be needed against our biggest rivals? The selector's priorities are a fucking joke.

True that. But I think the root of the problem is ponting's leadership and form.

He's not exactly getting the support to go on to the 'big score' to which you refer. 95 in Perth is still a quality effort. I'd say he's been the pick of the batsmen this series.

He hasn't been run out at all. He's been involved in two of them, but hasn't actually been run out himself. As for not getting the support, He's never been later than the 4th wicket to fall, in any innings this series. The supports been there, he just hasn't made the most of it. Bit unfair on Hussey to say Watson has been the pick of the batsmen. And I assume you mean Pick of the Aussie batsmen.

TBF with Watson, as an opener I don't care about him getting a big score. I want my openers to set up the innings with a good 100-150 run partnership. Big scores are just a bonus imo. Watson has been holding up his end of that deal and if Katich hadn't got injured he would have had someone who is capable of holding up the other end, with Hughes he doesn't have that, which is why not getting a big score suddenly looks bad.

Watson's been the most consistent. Australia would have been fucked without either of them, really. Definitely the loss of Katich isn't helping things, Sydcro. But would it be making THAT much difference?

It wouldn't make a massive difference, but it would help having two openers who you know could put on a 100-150 run opening stand. Just don't get that feeling with Hughes.

Until this test, Hussey hadn't been dismissed for less than 50 all series. And even with Watson batting one more innings, and Hussey failing this test, he still has nearly 200 runs more for the series, and an average 25 points higher than Watson. There's no way you can say Hussey hasn't been Australia's best batsman this series. He's been miles ahead of the rest.

Ok, so I take that back.
It seems like Watson's always out in the middle when there's a player run-out. Is he hard of hearing or something?

South Africa all out for 215. India win by 87 runs and level the series at 1-1. Not one 100 or 50 in the match, Laxman coming the closest to 100 with 96, the highest score after that was 39. Not one total past 300.

If the selectors keep living in the past, definitely.
I mean, every time there's a dead rubber in a test series, they select the same players anyway. Why aren't they blooding some new talent?

Plus who is there to bring in? A few years ago it seemed you could just about pick any domestic player from any domestic team and theyd be good enough to slot right in.
God I miss the days where we had the best XI in the world, minus murali, lara, maybe vaas and pollock.

anyone been watching the quicksilver pro? the womens surfing was very high quality, any of slater, taj burrow or jordy smith (whoever wins their heat) can take it from here.
Slater ahsn't been surfing that well until the semi, jordy smith has won 2 heats in the last 30 seconds and is capable of anything, taj has the highest heat score and won it last year.
Awesome stuff to watch.

Australia 6/260 in the QF against India after 50 overs. Ponting has scored 104. Although will be 260 enough? In reply india are 0/35 in the 5th, Tendulker on 14* and Sehwag on 14*

Australia really threw that away in the last 10 overs. Said it for a long time, but Shaun Tait will never win you anything.

Australia look like chasing down Bangladesh's total comfortably. Currently 1/124 after 18.1 overs. Shane Watson has 95 off 64 balls.

Watson's gone fucking nuts. 26 runs of one over, including 4 sixes in a row takes him to 141 off 80. He's now hit the most sixes in an innings by an Australian with 10.

And he breaks the record with another 2 consecutive sixes.
Just crazy, 14 fours and 14 sixes.
If only Bangladesh got a higher score, we'd be seeing a new world record.

Game over after 26 overs. Australia finish 1/232 courtesy of an unbelievable 185 for Shane Watson off only 96 balls. 15 fours and 15 sixes which is a new ODI record. Also set a new ODI record for most runs in boundaries in an innings.
Only thing stopping Watson breaking Sachin's record was Bangladesh not getting a higher score.

185 from one individual chasing a total of 229 is just unthinkable. Easily one of the best innings ever. Makes you rethink just what is possible.

As of over 10 in this innings Watson had hit 250 off 130 since his last dismissal balls hitting 27 sixes and 17 fours. Just ridiculous.

Was personally liking $6 for Australia 1-12 but luckily I didn't. Good to see Samoa actually assemble a full-strength side that can throw the proverbial cat into the pidgeons that are the major countries.

Crazy stuff. 2 on, 2 dead, 2 strikes in the bottom of the 9th. St Louis, trailing by 2. Guy hits a triple to tie the game. Extra innings.
Texas were one pitch away and it got ripped for a triple.

Basketball U19 Russia - Serbia Serbia has so far been very dominant, but I believe that in today's meeting may have some problems due to the strength and inner line of the Russians. The Russians have broken the day before with 68 points difference, but it is not so important because the game already written off early so they rested most important players. 's Game they will be or not to be, because winning is their only chance to stay in the game for the quarterfinals. Will surely give my best and I am sure that they have the quality that they do not lose the match by 15 points. In fact I believe that this match will be very uncertain finale. Janmaat, there's no way to feel down, I said Janmaat, put yourself on the ground. You can stay there, at NUFC, there's a way to have a good time... He plays RB for the NUFC, He plays RB for the NUFC.
Yep, I'm so bored that I'm thinking of player chants for a team I don't support.
