Contrast on the coast in soccer funding
| December 10th, 2010

THEY may only be a short drive apart, but the contrast between the facilities at Surf Coast Soccer Club and Surfside Waves could not be more stark.

State League club Surf Coast could soon boast one of the best soccer precincts in western Victoria if stage two of the club's master plan gets off the ground.

But it's a far different story at Surfside Waves.

The Ocean Grove-based club is so crippled by insufficient facilities that some home matches have been transferred, training is often cancelled and women change in the tight confines of their cars.

Surf Coast Soccer Club is the envy of most clubs around the region.

It will have a new FIFA 2 standard artificial pitch in time for next season as part of a multi-million dollar new base in Torquay's industrial area.

The GRFA club has made initial contact with council about getting much-needed temporary change rooms to ease the strain for more than a dozen junior and senior teams.

Currently, the club has one change room and it is shared by all teams. There are no provisions for females.

Burgess, a club stalwart, said juniors were often forced to play home matches at away venues to preserve the club's home grounds in winter.

In a welcome boost, Surfside will receive $1000 for every goal Melbourne Heart scores for the rest of the season under Westpac's Heart 2 Heart initiative.

There are sporting clubs of all kinds, all over the country using run-down and overcrowded amenities. Soccer has the most participants, yet probably the least suitable facilities from what I've seen. The large (and growing) number of female players only compounds things and is unique amongst the football codes.

The clubs and their members/players need to collectively lobby councils and governments to change this. Get a plan in place for the future, so we don't have girls having to change in their cars anymore.

Theyve got two quality pitches, 1 ok pitch, toilets and changerooms, sure they are small but they have also been given the go ahead for joint club rooms ($3m) with the Ocean Grove football club (Aussie rules) moving to the shell road precinct.
The reason for the lop sidedness in facilities between surfside and surf coast is, surf coast promotes inclusive football, promoting juniors, womens, seniors and masters, they also play in the Victoria provisional leagues, Surfside last year kick 30 senior players out because they were either not good enough or too old, for the Geelong league in which some SUCESSFUL teams have players nearing or passing 70 years old. no exaggerations either. HELP THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES.

Scubaroo,
You clearly know nothing about the situation at Surfside and are talking rubbish.
Surfside too have juniors, seniors, mens and womens teams in all age groups and are one of the largest community clubs in the region. The club philosophy is to provide opportunities for all to play our great game. The lack of facilities has mean't that some players have moved elsewhere. The club certainly DID NOT KICK THEM OUT. In future please ensure that you are fully informed before making stupid statements.
