I have not seen him play this season

He is highly regarded at the club however has lost some of his run recently

He normally starts off LB

chris, how is Rhodri Payne doing? Looking sharp, or just mediocre? He's one of those players permanently based in Australia, meaning we never get to see them play :(

The name Southern Cross FC would have worked well for that type of situation though, give its generic type nature.

Must say the media attention south received in Tassie the last 2 pre seasons was not expected and a nice surprise.

SOUTH Melbourne humbled southern Premier League outfit Olympia Warriors on Friday night, showcasing its superiority with an impressive 9-0 victory at KGV Park.

South's coach Eddie Krncevic fielded a young side in the first half, but the visitors needed just seven minutes to register their first goal with Nick Jacobs scoring a superb lob from the edge of the box, following a pass from Seba Petrovic.

Olympia defended valiantly after conceding, but after enduring continuous South Melbourne attacks, the home side succumbed to another Jacobs strike four minutes before the interval.

Jacobs completed his hat-trick two minutes into the second half, pouncing on a defensive mix-up in the Olympia backline as the floodgates threatened to open.

Kyle Joryeff added a fourth with a well-directed header after a pin-point Jacobs cross on 56 minutes, before Krncevic introduced some of his more experienced players, including his son, Jesse.

The coach's son didn't disappoint, piling on five goals in 28 minutes.

Krncevic showed his prowess in the box, calmly finishing good build-ups by his team mates to register a quick-fire hat-trick with goals in the 63rd, 72nd and 75th minutes, before stepping up to slot home a penalty three minutes before time for his fourth.

Krncevic applied the icing to the visitors' cake with a header on the stroke of full-time.

"It was a good hit-out. I'm happy my strikers got on the score sheet and it was interesting to analyse my youngsters in the first half and see how they adapted," coach Krncevic said.

The Olympia players struggled to hide their disappointment after the full-time whistle, but assistant coach Mark Loftus highlighted a number of positives to come out of the exhibition match.

"Obviously we're disappointed; we've got a lot to build on but it's early days. We've got a new squad, but no one wants to get a hiding like that," Loftus said.

"But we can build from it. There were a couple of good performances by the players and they [South Melbourne] were class all around the ground and we can learn from them."

South Melbourne meets State champion South Hobart today.

Good result.

Havent heard much about the strength of the Tasmanian league before, but as the champions last year, its certainly an eye opener. Both teams being in off-season doesnt give totally accurate picture, but its good to see the potential of these games in a developmental sense for all involved.

SOUTH Melbourne produced an inspired performance against South Hobart yesterday to claim the inaugural Hill Street/Thrifty Cup with a 5-0 victory against the Tasmanian state champion.

Over 600 fans were treated to a scintillating exhibition of quality football by the Melbourne club at Darcy Street.

Coach Eddie Krncevic made seven changes to the side that thrashed Olympia Warriors 9-0 on Friday, bringing in Rhodri Payne, Daniel Vasilevski, Brazilian Fernando De Moraes and Carlo Recchia.

South Melbourne took less than 10 minutes to open the scoring, with Kyle Joryeff outmuscling Loic Feral at the back before firing into the top corner in the eighth minute.

Midfielders Marinos Gasparis, De Moraes and Vasilevski controlled the tempo of the match. Vasilevski slotted home clinically on 25 minutes.

Ken Morton's South Hobart struggled as striker Andy Brennan limped off before the break, and Josh Fielding, goalkeeper Sam Kruijver and defender Daniel Brown were sidelined in the second half.

Joryeff added his second early in the second half, capitalising on a defensive error, before he turned provider for De Moraes to tap home the fourth.

Man of the match Joryeff had his hat-trick after Cameron Williams brought down the striker in the box and he converted the spot-kick.

South Hobart went close when Kostas Kanakaris struck the woodwork in the first half and Tom Roach headed against the upright in the second, but Morton admitted his side was outclassed.

"We're disappointed with the scoreline, we didn't defend well at all throughout the 90 minutes and three goals were gifts," Morton said.

"We never got our foot on the ball and played. If you give quality sides like South Melbourne time and space they'll play.

"Their passing was more clinical, their finishing was deadly and at the back they gave nothing away."

Krncevic was pleased with his side's performance.

"It was a good hit-out for us," Krncevic said.

"We played with our first 11. It was probably the first time in two months we put a squad together for the senior team."

The distances will definately be a dissapointment for many, but overall the new facilities, and a 2nd covered grandstand, along with a new scoreboard, will be great additions for the matchday experience.

I believe it's somewhere in the region of 12k seats (undercover), plus capacity on the grass behind the goals.

Distance will be the same as at any other athletics venue - so not perfect, but not as bad as it looks on the animation (which looks really wide).

We all agree that the blue running track is a touch of class.

The new stand looks good, with a very nice architectural profile from the back also a great design feature. The new scoreboard will be a great addition too. The blue track suits very well also.

Overall, its a great new addition to the sporting infrastructure of the city, and its great to see the heritage stand being redeveloped.

They key difference between our deal and the A-League deals is that we started negotiations in the position of power... Athletics Victoria couldn't do anything until our lease expired, which meant they had to bring something to the table for us as they were desperate to move (or at least Eddie was desperate to get his hands on Olympic Park for Collingwood).

With the A-League teams, they were all put into a position where they had to have a venue of a certain standard or they couldn't even get a license, in many locations there was only one suitable venue, which allowed the management of that venue to bend the local franchise owner over.

As I understand it, Adelaide and the Mariners are the only franchises who are actually looked after by stadium management - everyone else is getting whacked.

Now... Lower the required venue standard and suddenly owning your own venue doesn't look so expensive.

Own (or control) your own venue and you are genuinely in control, can plan ahead, have more revenue streams and you create a real focal point for supporters.

We don't 'own' the ground per se but the club contribution to the development of the stadium has been independantly valued at around the $7 million mark. So if they ant to boot us out they basically gotta hand over that amount. Also most importantly South is in control of all football matters at the BJS redevelopment. Anyone want to use, hire etc have to see South first. The 6 or so junior and synthetic pitches and the new pavillion built for them is an awesome addition as well. The club has done brilliantly off the field even with all the obstacles and road blocks put in place by 'those' that want to see the club fall over in order to get their grubby hands on this deal.

Hense this venue will should also ensure AAMI's prices remian anchored - should AAMI in future decide to inflate their prices then this stadium will come into consideration - it has been floated that the Heart currently have a favourable agreement at AAMI for the first 3 years - this will not remain in place - after 3 years a break even crowd will be 20K

Regarding smfc - The deal is not only the stadium but the precinct - smfc will enjoy access to surrounding grounds and pavillions and most importnantly the aquatic centre and sport science fascility

In line with the smfc vision regading football academy - this stadium will assist smfc in meeting its objective as the number 1 end to end football institution in this country

SMFC will enjoy direct funding annually from the governemt for its displacement
$1,000,000 up front + Approx $200,000 annually

SMFC will have an operation 7 day per week social fascility and museum

The Agreement has been signed off for 40 years

The committee should be congratulated for an outstanding achievement

Im talking the reality of the situation. I gave credit for the clubs dealings and what they have, but I also see complications that actually see SMFC come out with less of a great deal this time.

In the 90s the vic govt wanted the land that the Middle Park stadium was on, which had older facilities, and the club got a great deal out of that, with brand new facilities at Lakeside oval. Thats where being in the right place at the right time came into it, thus being luck. Now, it will have to share that venue with other tenants, with their own access requirements.

Athletics will be moving into the stadium, and its season runs from October to March each year. That is when many bigger athletics events will be held, and also other commitments that AV has to its interclub and training program requirements. That will see stadium access issues at times over that period in particular.

They certainly did well for themselves in the dealings with the govt back in the 90s, to get in that position. It was luck, but hey its still a good outcome. The latest outcome for the new stadium though is both good and bad for SMFC.

It has new facilities in the stadium, however it must now share the tenancy with AV, AA and the VIS, with limitations on access now likely to occur at times in the year. The new training fields are good though as a compromise, but it may not be a great outcome if the VPL ever moves to summer, as that is athletics season.
