Festival of the boot wraps up ratings for networks

More than 3 million Australians watched the rugby league grand final clash between the Melbourne Storm and the Canterbury Bulldogs.

The Sunday evening match drew a national audience of 3.68 million viewers, which includes the five capital cities and viewers in regional areas.

That climbed to 3.711 million viewers for the presentation of the winning team.

The pre-game entertainment drew a national (capital city plus regional) audience of 2.02 million viewers.

Channel Nine's coverage ranked No.1 in the 25- to 54-year-old, 18 to 49 and 16 to 39 demographics.

With audience volumes like that driving the numbers, a win for the night was a no-brainer for Nine.

It took out the night with an impressive audience share of 40.8 per cent.

In the 25 to 54 demographic – Nine's declared preferred demographic – that rose to 47.2 per cent.

But for those who delight in comparisons between codes, the AFL edged out the rugby league in terms of ratings.

On a national audience basis (capital city plus regional viewers), Saturday's AFL grand final between the Sydney Swans and Hawthorn drew an average of 3.95 million viewers for Channel Seven.

That number climbed to 4.16 million for the post-match presentation.

Mate don't you understand, it's the NRL's fault for punishing cheats. I mean how dare they.

Just on the game, well done to Melbourne just too good in the enbd. First half killed us, 2nd half was much better but just didn't have enough in the end.

Also, what the fuck has happened to Smith's goal kicking. That penalty miss that hit the post was one of the worst misses I have ever seen.

Like I've been saying to everyone who says this...It wasnt the NRL who cheated.

No playing behind Toovey and Kimmorley shows that he was second fiddle.

I still think Johns is worthy of the award but it wasn't his time. Why has he been pushed ahead of Provan and Mal? Johns isn't even in the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame. FFS.

In Johns' first origin series, against Fatty Vautin's "Nevilles" in 1995, his team were spanked 3-0. His next four origins were at hooker, with Geoff Toovey claiming the No.7 jersey. In 2000, he couldn't make the run-on team, with Brett Kimmorley preferred at halfback. It wasn't until 2002, seven years after his origin debut, that Johns started to impose himself on that level of the game. Compare that with 20 year-old birthday boy Mal Meninga's seven goal performance in the first origin match in 1980. (I seem to remember Allan Langer also hit the ground running in the first of his 34 origins).
