You're getting this wrong. In order for football to move forward we need the A-League alive and strong, and then to raise our own game to the point that we become viable entrants into the competition.

Worry about what we're doing, not them.

If the FFA, or State Associations, 'attack' our clubs directly, THEN we should kick and scream the house down, but for the most part we should be doing our bit now to make our clubs attack proof.

Reality - the FFA won't attack anything that they believe can be of use to them. We have to make them believe the way we do. We won't do that without popular support. We won't win popular support so long as we run around saying "death to Sydney FC scabs", etc.

End of rant.

nobodys said anything about the national competition and people shouldnt see a thousand levels in everything thats said

death to Sydney FC scabs because its a scab club with scab fans. Some of them are football people that have abandoned the teams they grew up with for what? and the rest of them are newdawners that get a bit flustered when David Beckham is in town and are mostly rugby league fans anyway.

i love my team and i love football, im determined to fight for both and its great to see so many people are beginning to feel and act the same way because its been bad news for 7 years of Lowy, the 'saviour of football'

You're honestly trying to say that "death to Sydney FC scabs" doesn't extend to the league as a whole?

You want us to believe that statements like "death to Sydney FC scabs" is going to do anything to bring the entire football community together?

You think that the use of "newdawners" and statements about people getting "a bit flustered when David Beckham is in town", is going to help?

You may have noticed that most Sydney FC fans were as pissed off as you are at those who get flustered with Beckham. It's not the 7-10,000 Sydney FC fans you should be bothered about, or the 5-8,000 Newcastle fans, it's the thousands and thousands that came out of the woodwork to see David's latest haircut that are the problem.

I love that you love your team, and continue to fight their corner - long may it continue - but we'll only grow the game by getting together.

And I think even the hardcore HAL supporters are beginning to realise that the Lowy model isn't perfect. Our job is to help support the structure - not by acting as feeder clubs or by being subservient, but by being strong, self supporting clubs, increasing the competition in the game - BUILDING FROM THE BOTTOM UP, in a way that the FFA don't seem to understand.

Fully agree with you. Great post.

The FFA need to see the value add proposition that other clubs can add. Calling for the death of clubs will not do anyone any favours. The death of Syd FC will not bring Syd Olympic/united and/or Marconi into the comp, it will just kill the league and take us back decades again. Get rid of self interest and look at the bigger picture people. Sitting there being negative wont help your cause.

As for the VPL, lets hope its a big year for Western suburbs again, with the returning St Albans Saints coming in, along with the Knights and Green Gully hopefully having performing well.

proper rivalries are bitter ones. celtic v rangers? everton v liverpool? roma v lazio? boca v river? partizan v red star?

big rivalries between NSL clubs were seldom violent lets be honest. nothing like toffees kids kicking heads in around the corner from anfield. for these NSL clubs the rivalry has shifted a bit id say in recent years due to necessity, instead of fighting between each other for glory and primacy we have a common enemy in the plastic football junta.

as a fan im willing to work for the benefit of the game the same as i and the club i follow have always. so why would i support clubs like sydney fc that have tried to tell people football didnt exist before 2005? that the 2006 world cup squad was Frank Lowy's gift to the people of Australia? that the NSL failed because the clubs were ethnic and dirty?

my club has had good and bad times but it has always been a symbol of how people can get together and serve so many good causes in so many ways. working with the local community. developing youth football. providing the best football spectacle in the country. winning titles. how dare anyone try to destroy that?

you break my club i break your face

your club broke itself from greedy board members.

It has sold itself so many times (UTS, olympic sharks etc) due to greedy board members that were chasing money rather than having the best interests of your club at heart

No derbies/rivalries in the A-league or old NSL are anywhere near as big as matches like that, you can't compare them.

thats not the point i was making, but irrespective i cant agree with that. thats like saying none of the NSL games ever had any weight, nothing ever mattered, which is simply not true. big games big crowds huge atmosphere, events that should be in our national football canon

the club is alive and kicking because there are enough of us who still believe in it and who are willing to offer time and money.

UTS was a sponsorship deal how is that selling out? is every club with a shirt sponsor a sellout? lol

Olympic Sharks was a polarising issue among the members committee but the millionaires with majority ownership made the call if I remember correctly. the idea was to tap into a boom area for youth football and it didnt work out. sometimes things go wrong dont they!!

as for chasing money rather than having the best interests of your club at heart, you can say that about anyone without any basis. what I keep hearing is that Westfield doesnt have to pay for their banners and signs at Sydney FC games. is this how we're going to have serious discussion on the future of our sport? just by throwing hollow accusations to and fro?

I'm not denying they weren't big matches in their own way and didn't have an atmosphere, but no derby in the history of Australian football has an atmosphere anywhere near as big as those listed.

I would love to see the day when the old clubs have the backing to see them included in the A-League.... but not Olympic atm. Too close geographically to FC and doesn't have the support or the backing for it yet.

A team like Marconi or Sydney United, from the heart of the West would be better, but still .. finding the money will be hard.

Interesting how South Melbourne will fit in to the 2 Melbourne teams already in the league.

Lowys' model's not the best... would have preferred the FFA to try getting the current clubs like Sydney Olympic and Marconi to appeal to a wider audience, steer away from ethnicity etc. and then add teams like Central Coast, North Queensland, Gold Coast etc. as expansion. Back these teams with money and promote the game as you would now... a game for everyone. Support your local team, and your local team support you.

Right now though, Olympic is stuck in 2nd division limbo... but considering their hardcore fans that's probably not so bad
