Soccer is a strong code
11 May, 2011 12:00 AM
SOCCER is kicking some big goals in the battle of the football codes in western Sydney.
The Nepean District Soccer Football Association has an estimated 15,000 registered juniors between the Blue Mountains and St Clair and numbers are growing each season.
In recognition of soccer's increasing numbers, the Star will profile a Nepean district soccer club each week.
The series kicks off with Glenmore Park Football Club, the second biggest soccer club in the district with 1200 players, ranging from under-5s to the Nepean premier league division two competition.
Formed in 1994, the club has grown to almost 100 teams, including four all-girls teams, said secretary John Liepa.
The club plays out of two grounds — Ched Towns Reserve and all games for 10 years and under is played at nearby Blue Hills Reserve.
"It's a great sight to see all six fields at Blue Hills in use at the same time on a Saturday morning," Mr Liepa said.
The club's under 10s, 11s, and 12s first division sides, along with the over-35s division three won their respective district competitions last season.
