My southern mates have told me that we are close to getting a goalkeeping coach, and that the appointment will shock people.

New_Dawn_Kiwi_Fan wrote:Do I win a prize with Warner? He will be GK coach. No prize for you, my good man! http://www.stuff.co.nz wrote:New Wellington Phoenix goalkeeper Tony Warner says he is not in New Zealand on a holiday and the 37-year-old vows to work hard and push Mark Paston for a starting spot.
A few eyebrows have been raised by the signing of Warner, who appears likely to warm the bench behind 34-year-old All Whites keeper Paston when the A-League kicks off.
England-born, with one appearance for Trinidad and Tobago to his name, Warner's resume includes stints at Liverpool, Celtic, Fulham and Leeds United, though most of his career was spent at Millwall, where he played 200 games, many as a team-mate of Paul Ifill.
Warner, who arrived on Wednesday and is in Dunedin preparing for tomorrow's preseason game against Brisbane Roar, said Ifill had suggested the move.
"Sometime last week, I spoke to the powers that be and we just thrashed something out really. They asked if I was interested and I was," Warner said.
Warner's last club was Tranmere Rovers and after coming off contract he said he fielded interest from Blackburn Rovers before the link "just fizzled out".
Warner's young family will join him in Wellington, which he describes as a fresh start.
"I've been all around the English leagues, up and down, left and right, and it's nice to come out here and experience something different.
"The A-League's had coverage in England over the last couple of years and you see all the games. I know a few people who have been out here as well and I thought, why not?"
In addition to Ifill, former Arsenal and England striker Francis Jeffers – who played for Newcastle Jets last season – was among those to recommend the A-League.
Warner has signed for one year and doesn't necessarily see the Phoenix as his last stop.
"I've still got a lot of time on my hands to play some good football. As long as you look after yourself and do things the right way, maybe you can go on for as long as you want to go on.
"I work very hard and a lot of goalkeepers, ex-goalkeepers and coaches just say play as long as you can. You're a long time retired."
Warner watched Paston and the All Whites' heroics at last year's World Cup. "They really surprised a lot of people with their quality and I'm aware of who Mark is. I'm just here to work hard, to give the manager options. For me, it's a long way to come to not put your full effort in."
It's all another chapter in a topsy-turvy career that started when Liverpool came calling when Warner was studying to be an accountant.
He didn't make a first-team appearance for the English Premier League giants but "it was a good experience nonetheless and set me on a successful path for my career".
