Women's knockout cup announced for 2012
Following on from the success of the Mirabella Cup and the enthusiasm within the football community for knockout style competitions, Football Federation Victoria (FFV) is proud to launch the Pelada Cup.
The Pelada Cup will be a similar in format to the Mirabella Cup, and is open to all clubs who have a senior women’s team.
Football apparel and equipment company Pelada has been announced as the major sponsor of the newly formed cup competition as well as coming on board to sponsor the Womens Premier League, the pinnacle of women’s football in Victoria.
This is a huge step forward for women’s football in the state, which has undergone steady growth over the past few years.
This is seen from juniors competitions all the way to seniors, evident in the fact that there has been an increase of over 30 percent in under 12 girls registering this year, and a new senior women’s league created in order to accommodate the growing number of teams.
FFV CEO Mark Rendell said he was delighted how competitive women’s football is becoming at all levels, and that the introduction of the Pelada Cup will further strengthen this.
“With the keen interest shown in the Mirabella Cup, it was a natural progression to extend it to our thriving women’s competition,” he said.
“The addition of the Pelada Cup to the women’s schedule reinforces FFV’s stance on the continued development and promotion of women’s football in Victoria.”
Head of Pelada Australia Ron Kerkvliet said the company is pleased to support both the Womens Premier League and the Pelada Cup.
“We're excited to be working with the FFV to support women's football in this country,” he said.
“The introduction of a knockout competition is another great step forward for the Womens Premier League and we look forward to a long and successful partnership.”
