What a fantastic day for football
Just goes to show that these ao called fan unfriendly mono ethnic clubs can still pull a great crowd without the celebrity high pitched status enjoyed by HAL clubs
There is room for these clubs and I there isn't then create it
SFC could not get 10k to most games last season, yet was achieved by 2 club cripples by new football albeit a GF
Finally well done to both teams on a fantastic game and congratulations to Olympic
A second tier is a must if football is serious about it's future

Hopefully the success of today's Grand Final will make the FFA seriously consider a 2nd tier competition involving ex-NSL clubs.....

You guys are leading the way, as far as i understand thats the first 10,000+ crowd at a state league match since South Melbourne v Heidelberg (12,000) way back in early 2005, this should put Olympic in a good position to bring back some of the old fans next season, congrats to syd united of course as well as it takes 2 to put on such a match.

To be fair, i think the crowd was half Olympic half United.
It just shows that the potential is there with your eg of Hellas vs Bergers as well as todays match.

Pretty sure it's the first 10k crowd since we've come into the comp and couldn't think of 2 better teams to do it.

Those pricks at FFA better have a serious think about the potential for a 2nd tier competition ffs.
Imagine Olympic, United, Knights, Hellas, Dandy and a few regional teams as a 2nd tier comp....

I think Olympic and United have a more dormant fanbase that are still willing to support both clubs under the right circumstances, where as here i think south/bergers fans have moved on to suppport other greek clubs or are 100% A league followers only...in the elimination final we only had about 2,500 against them...doubt we could get 10,000 to a grand final now, would be nice if we made it to find out though:lol:...if anything the fact that your crowd was 50/50 split shows a strength in both clubs.

I can't speak on uniteds behalf, but Olympic has a ridiculous amount of dormant fans. There's another 5 Greek clubs in the state league system, and no Greeks give a fuck about them, and not many jumped onto the Sydney FC band wagon. They are still out there, clearly band wagoners, but hopefully today's game will bring them back next season

I think Sydney FC draws a lot of its fans from the ex northern spirit era, here in Melbourne all the Greeks i know that got me into South now support MV, i would guess that Greeks are quite possibly the biggest backers of MV, not just in terms of fans but also corporate support....looking ahead i think Olympic are in a better position as all you need to do is convince them to come back to the games (today helps bigtime), here in Melbourne you need to get people to change teams back to South and then convince them to vpl...a near impossible task.

5 + Olympic = 6
So out of 48 state league Clubs, 6 are Greek.
There are 4 Italian clubs and 3 Croatian. So we have the most out of the ethnic sides.
Greeks couldn't give a shit about the other Greek sides.

For us it's more the opposite.
You will often find Players and committees of the other clubs coming to Olympic if there isn't a clash in kick off.
We are the epicenter of Greek football in Sydney, how south Melb and Bergers should be for Melb....

Great idea, lets just destroy the entire last 8 years of hard work to get people away from a fully professional successful league so they can support South Melbourne in the VPL   Or are you saying, support victory or Heart durign summer, local club during winter? Pure coincidence we never made it to a world cup in the entire span of the NSL 1978-2004? Nope, we qualified the year after it was gone and the majority have not looked back since.

Yeah great to see that you can blur the line so well. A grand final atracting people is easy. Where were these crowd numbers in regular season matches. Apples for apples Chris. SFC in their last Grand Final season were pulling 12,000 on average. what were Olympics or United's for that matter?

Johnny Warren himself quoted we would never make the World Cup under the current model which at the time was the NSL. You going to argue with him AND me? I've only been an avid football fan for about 5 years though so pardon me.

What about the NSL stars such as Trimboli, Alex Tobin, Milan Ivanovic, Damian Mori, John Markovski etc why did they not kick on? I am not trying to be a dick, I genuinely want to get your viewpoint on issues that happened way before I was into football

While it may be true that we only made a 2nd WC just after the end of the NSL. Of that 23 man squad that went to the 2006 world cup 18 came through the NSL. The end of the NSL and the start of the A-League had fuck all to do with qualifying for the world cup.

When compared to the old SA/ASF who plotted games against Scotland in the cold and damp Melbourne instead of Townsville or Darwin, truly they where a bunch of clueless morons
