How about instead of locking threads offering suggestions to stop the spamming, you delete the users who are doing the spamming? Can't you put an IP ban or something on?

For those that wonder what happened I made some suggestions, was berated by a mod, quickly had 5 forumites back me in succession and then all the supporting posts were deleted and thread locked. If the thread stood for another day I would have had the overwhelming support of the forum and action would have finally been taken  Sometimes you need to have autonomy to step outside the template if you want things fixed I like to fix things QUICK,others don't understand how to http://au.fourfourtwo.com/forums/default.aspx?g=posts&t=61992

Are you able to disable the sign up function temporarily just to sort this mess out?

Are these spambots being deleted? Or just their threads?

KiwiChick1 wrote:Are you able to disable the sign up function temporarily just to sort this mess out? Tis a good suggestion, but no they won't.It needs Andy Jackson or an admin probably to do that I would prefer my thread was opened again(I rename said thread) and stickied for 24 hours-let the forum discuss things and get 442 to take measures tomorrow End of story

Yeah I know mate,it was Stifler Great sentiment mate but it won't work.If we keep talking about it here then we will have the same problem ad infinitum Leave it in OZ football for 24,as a sticky, let the forum discuss it full on and then get 442 to act-end of This will be my last post in feedback.I don't normally ever come here, and neither do 99.99% of posters EVER Sticky in OZ FOOTBALL-24 hours-problem solved OR discuss in feedback and let the problem continue in the foreseeable future :-k

LOCK THE SPAM,NOT THE SOLUTION Sorry girt, but please cut it out. You think us mods have the capacity to just change the software and add/take off features on how the forum is run? Stop feeling sorry for yourself. We're doing our best to keep on top of it, the higher ups have been contacted, and us mods have deleted hundreds of threads, locked dozens of users, and used OUR time to do it. So be grateful. There really isn't anything more that can be done right now than delete the threads and ban the users whenever the mods get online. Imno and others have made excellent suggestions that just need to be implemented by the Web Guy.
Good job lads, this really is a massive pain in the arse for the readers but you guys have to click on each one of those threads to get rid of them. That's pretty epic. Cheers

I am really sorry about this guys, and just a huge shout out to the mods who have been doing a fantastic job to try to keep on top of this.
We are a little constrained at what we can do about this as The Web Guy is, erm, on holiday. And so far, I have yet to find anyone else with admin rights to the forums (I just have supermod rights...yeah, I know...)
Until we do, there is nothing we can actually do.
However, so far as what we will do - a requirement to have 20 posts before creating a thread won't work. The bots will just make 20 spamming posts in a thread before going on another new thread rampage.
AS captcha code may work, but I'm not certain how effective they are. Perhaps we will need multiple captchas...who knows.
In the meantime, if I can find someone with admin rights, I will have a block on all new sign ups put in place until we can come with another solution (or the spam bots go away).
That probably won't be before tomorrow though, and even that might be wishful thinking :(
Apologies again, and thanks once more to the mods for dealing with the carnage.

Well done lads. Mods to go on strike. Demand a pay rise (or demand to actually get paid for this) ;). I mean, heck. If Qantas can have a strike every 2-weeks over it, and teachers can a couple times a year, surely you guys have the right too. ;)
WOLLONGONG WOLVES FOR A-LEAGUE EXPANSION!

Kev, I dunno how exactly the coding works for the spambots and I've missed the barrage of the last couple of days, but aren't they only creating threads? So I'm not sure if they would revert to posting the designated number of posts as spam and then creating topics or not.
I guess you could take the approach of some other forums and make it so all new users have to be verified by a Mod before they can begin posting, but that could create more problems.
You already follow a 'verification' link sent to your email, right? :-k
