Kev, I dunno how exactly the coding works for the spambots and I've missed the barrage of the last couple of days, but aren't they only creating threads? So I'm not sure if they would revert to posting the designated number of posts as spam and then creating topics or not.

I guess you could take the approach of some other forums and make it so all new users have to be verified by a Mod before they can begin posting, but that could create more problems.

You already follow a 'verification' link sent to your email, right? :-k

I've seen one or two where they've posted a reply in their own thread, so I think they can post just a post by itself, but have been aiming for threads. I imagine if they can't make threads, KA's right, they'll just post.

Maybe people should "support their sponsors" so they don't keep asking us to go to their stores?
They probably have like 6 kids or something and need to feed them.

"How was work today honey?"
" :( I tried selling our merchandise and told a thousand people a thousand times but no one was interested. Sorry kids, no food tonight"

You people are cruel!

What a warrior.

We could always just leave them to post their guts out in AF. It would probably increase the quality of postage in there.

Yeah do this, though reading that Marty B and co have had to delete hundreds of these threads - Some might just spam 50 posts to enable it, though from my experience in other forums, it could certainly cut the spambot activity down.

There's also one of those jumbled word verification thingos, that people registering an account have to decipher and type out, before joining. I think that eliminates the accessibility for many spambots. It's been a long while since I registered my account, but there's also account activation via email, though I presume the FFT forums already do this (And that's probably no deterrent for spammers, right?).

Great idea, unless they post heaps of times before they spam, but i doubt they will go to the trouble, right?

I think this is the way to go. It's really the only option I can see that would stop them at the border so to speak. However, I suppose as they get smarter they'll stop using link names and start using originality to sign up. So you might end up blocking a suspect "FootballLover98" thinking it's a possible spambot, when in fact it's some poor bloke, born in 1998 who actually loves the game and wants to sign up to the forums for discussion on football.

The mod approval for new activations is not going to happen. Who is going to approve them? Mods who are volunteers and don't work for Haymarket? Not a chance.

TWG who works on countless other websites and is not exclusive to 442? Not a chance.

KA who has better things to do, like be the online editor for the website, so again not a chance.

Having a post limit before new threads can begin will not stop spambots, because they also post in existing threads as they have many times in the past.

CAPTCHA doesn't always work either, as I've noticed from experience.

We've mentioned a few other suggestions to TWG who will probably look into it today.

Not entirely sure how the process works, but I wouldn't think it would take too long. I mean, surely you wouldn't need to have someone doing online 24/7. How many new people do we get a week? 5? 10? If you run through the list once or twice a week it surely wouldn't take more then an hour or two to approve people.

That way you could probably stop spam multi's, too.

So are you going to pay someone for that "hour or two" man hours a week?

Its not going to happen so no point in discussing it. Just because only 5 or 10 new users show up in the forums doesn't mean that 442 only gets 5-10 new users registering to the site.

Registration is for the entire site, not just the forums.

A Credit Card verification would be the death of this forum. Will existing users have to also complete this step? What if you don't have a Credit Card?

lol I was kidding. We'd lose a third or so of our users if that was implemented.

The fields I listed (plus expiry, which I forgot) are the details required to make online purchases.
