I thought so. The thing about not being able to post threads until you have 50 posts is good. Im guessing its harder than it sounds though.

But in the past the bots have posted in existing threads, and once they hit 50, they'll just start creating their own. So its not really a solution to the problem.

The same spam they're creating threads with. So rather than a bunch of new threads, they'll just bump extremely old threads/ fill current threads, until they have 50 posts and then start their own threads. It might slow them down a bit, but ultimately its not solving anything.

Hmmm this sounds tricky to fix.

Probably the only practical idea, but if a spambot can be set up to pick its way through captchas it won't be curtailed by a verification code IMO.

They already have to click on a verification email before they can start posting.

We'll be putting up a "prove you're human" question sometime today, but that probably won't stop it either.

The reason?

They're most likely not bots. But humans who have no lives - and are actually paid to - spam up forums for the 0.000001% chance that someone will actually buy something.

What we CAN potentially do later on, is ban entire countries from registering to the site. This has helped on some of our other sites who had similar problems.

You should just make them recite the Australian Anthem backwards or something.

I know some sites like MegaUpload etc IP block certain countries.

Other sites like Hulu basically geographically IP block us from viewing their content.

You should restrict forum posting until someone has proved they're not a spammer or a bot. No posting until the first one has been approved by a moderator.

I think they've fucked off mostly now... I haven't seen any for a while now.

There was one this morning, and I've banned at least a dozen the last couple of days.

When were their join dates?

Some may be sleeper agents lying in a dormant stasis and only activate once the current active ones are terminated.

Seems like most of them register and start spamming immediately.

All were signed up since early Wednesday morning.

A few of these were dormant, I banned them because they had similar names.
