That would be one conclusion but a less biased appraisal is the ratings have gone down from a season average of 60-65k when in "clear air" but the 52k average for last weekend is 20% higher than the season average last year and equal to the Season 5 average. This is quite a good response in the analysis of the whole seasons ratings.
The figures quoted above for last weekend are the #20 rated programmes, not the aleague telecasts. As only the top 20 for each day are published and they weren't included, they were somewhere below each #20 figure. How far below, I have no idea. Thanks for that... I didn't notice the < sign. It would have been quite an acceptable rating if true. I wish we had access to someone who had the dough to get the full results. Would still like to test the Gorman (?) claim that 40% of the ratings are from Sydney.

crimsoncrusoe wrote:Does anyone know if ratings were below 55k when the season started without the so called clear air? It looks to me that marketing by other football codes is just as intense at the beginning of the season as at the end.At finals time though many fans lose interest because thier team has dropped out.MV fans and the favt they missed the finals has also had a big affect.Although even when they still had a chance of qualifying ratings had halved. Overall though starting later has had little impact.Kewell ,Emerton and the Roar had more of an impact. When Roar went on their losing streak a lot of their gloss disappeared. From memory the opening game rated above 150k. For some reason 173k rings a bell but I don't trust my old brain anymore lol Last years the average rating for the season was about 43K a game and the last I heard this season the average was still around 60k but that was before the NRL started. The first 2 games involving Kewell rated 150k...MV games remained steady around the 70k mark for a while...all the other teams have been in the 40-60s all season long and even MV are dropping off now...the decline really started around the time the big bash cricket started in December.

Averages arent reliable given that last season not only had more games, but also more Wednesday games which for some reason rate lower. A better indication will be to compare the first 2 rounds of this season vs last, the middle 2 rounds, and the last 2 rounds.

Rating below nrl, afl, super rugby is fine...but being bumped out of the top 20 by the crappy entertainment channels is not good. I'd be interested to know the breakdown of Foxtel's customers. It's only a small sample of 20 people, but amongst my group of football mates 10% have Foxtel - myself and 1 other. Yet, 12 of us are members of MHT or MVFC! The majority can't see the point of paying 12 mths for Foxtel that only will be used a maximum of 6 mths per year. Also, many go away to holiday homes during summer when there is no HAL in Melbourne & wouldn't be able to access Foxtel on such w/e. The same guys happily pay for games via Setanta, UEFA.com b/c it means they can watch the game anywhere they want.

Not sure of your justification for those rounds but I wouldn't use them if I were you. This first rounds this year were the best on record and the middle ones are the Christmas/New Year week compared to early November last year. Of course I would expect last year's final two weeks to be better than this year's because it was not competing against the other codes.

2012 crowds have been a lot lower then 2011 and tv ratings r down. Probably more to do with The Victory and Sydney being failures, If a Kewell led Victory won games from the start it could have been a different story. Unfortunately it was the Mariners who hogged top spot and they will never have huge crowds or ratings. Its not because of Victory and Sydney imo as even other teams are dropping off i think its got to do with Asian champions league being on as well as some teams have 2 games a week. But like i said ages ago our crowds are still very good considering the overall viewership we get for the A-league. Perhaps this October thing wasnt a good idea. If that's the case, the idea of starting in October was to have better exposure, increased crowds and audience at the start of the season. Wouldn't this be an indication that the later start is working just as expected?

The fact that there were three crucial games on Sunday resulted in a kick. The Sydney Newcastle game topping the A-League weekend is pleasing. The FFA is quoting a 46% increase over last year in average rating for the season which means 63k average and the second best A-League result ever.

They are hoping for it because of their large long term presence on Fox. Fox started broadcasting NRL back near the start of paytv in Sydney (1998 sticks in my mind but that may be wrong) and it drove subscription growth there. Sydney still has the highest penetration of paytv in the country. On that if the figure quoted earlier this season that Sydney accounts for 40% of A-League viewership is correct it would be because of the subscriptions initially driven by the NRL.

Foxtel has a much higher penetration rate in Sydney and Brisbane, and this is driven primarily by the NRL. The reason why there's never been any "Fox NRL" channel but there is a "Fox AFL" channel is because Foxtel are trying to push their product in Victoria to increase the takeup rate.

The fact they don't have simulcast rights for all the FTA NRL games would be a big factor, far too hard to fill out a schedule when you don't have those live games to build the schedule around. Wouldn't surprise me if they created a Fox Rugby channel in the future, put NRL, NSW Cup, retro games, Talk shows, Highlights shows & Super rugby, highlights, talk show etc. Would be a packed schedule of live games and some highlights shows with replays during the week.

How many games on Fox Footy are shown on channel 7 at the same time? If these AFL figures continue, FOX will make big losses on their investment

I think Hawthorn v Collingwood, Fremantle v Geelong and Port Adelaide v St kilda were shown on FTA. Fox Footy is the highest rating channel for Foxtel so im sure they are happy with their investment so far. Top 5 STV Channels FOX FOOTY FOX SPORTS 2 FOX8* The LifeStyle Channel* FOX SPORTS 3 *Includes plus 2 channels
