will all games being simulcast on fox reduce the AFL FTA viewership? OR has it?

Also on a kinda related note. Delayed games are now a thing of the past. I doubt very much if any new TV rights deal includes not live rights.

Possibly or at least partly because the NRL, the most followed sport up there, have always been on PayTV.
Hence why the NRL out rates the AFL on Fox.

Hopefully the FFA wrap up a decent TV deal soon.

Spot on, NSW and Queenslanders watch sports on TV whilst Melbournians attend sporting events... Evidence and facts proove this.

How, then, do you explain higher FTA ratings for afl? Evidence and facts?

I was only talking about PayTV figures, and why NRL does so well.
But without seeing the FTA figures, I'd imagine FTA numbers for AFL would be massively swayed by Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth viewers.
Sydney and Brisbane figures would probably be a lot lower. But would be interesting to see those figures.

anyone think the NRL may vy for a channel on their own given the AFLs lead? and having better ratings.

I would personally love to see Fox footy, Fox NRL, Fox Football, and Fox Sports (for other I guess, union, etc). with Fox football having all A-league, EPL, maybe some more championship games, and also perhaps fox to look at some other leagues? there seems to be almost a channels worth of replays and shows on that are football related already. Bit of a pipe dream, but would be amazing.

Its been a long time since I have seen Sydney AFL FTA ratings but from what I recall the only decent figure was for Swans games.

Mate - Fox Footy is already the number one STV channel - one round into the AFL season! The pick up in Southern subscriptions hasn't even started yet. I'm not sure what you are focusing on, but the aggregate ratings are big - clearly!

Edited by Mister Football: 3/4/2012 09:38:11 AM

And Fox have been promoting the crap out of AFL for months, including AFL team remotes! Yet people are not subscribing. The culture in Melbourne is different: people are used to going to the game live when their team plays, but are happy to watch a delayed telecast when their team doesn't play, for free.

It won't matter what the ratings are if people are not subscribing. Fox needs a hell of a lot of new subscribers, and according to a recent article I read, 30% is about as big as Pay TV is expected to get in Australia.

Melbournians have no money to subscribe to Fox because they've wasted it betting on who is going to be the next coach of MV.

Yes, afl rates poorly in Sydney.

........

Afl ratings are swayed by afl states and nrl by nrl states, which of course, obviously isn't news.

The fta figures are available for anyone to see by following the links provided in many posts in this thread.

Both pay and FTA ratings are up on round 1 last year, in aggregate, by some 65%.

First round attendances were an all time record for the first round, averaging 40k.

Way to go GWS Giants. Another 39 memberships sold this week. Stunning effort after 76 being sold last week. How long can they sustain the pace? 8,145 is the total now.

Seriously though the inclusion of another AFL club in Australia's biggest payTV market should be good for Fox overall as will the new football team in western Sydney. Sydney is the mainstay of Fox's football ratings so that will be reinforced significantly.

Should the Fox Footy channel lead to a significant increase in subscription uptake in Melbourne there could be a spin off for A-League ratings as well.

Exiting time for all codes really.

Sorry Mister Footy - you really don't like presenting the facts do you. I read in the paper that the first round crowds were just short of the record.

Not sure what to make of the AFL crowd claims anyway. The crowds in Melb were obviusly big and came across great on tv but I went to the Suns game and the crowd was put up as just short of 13,000. There is no way more than 8,000 went and I know about 8 people that went and not one bought a ticket.
Sorry to add balance to your enthusiasm.

Obviously, other codes have a habit of exaggerating crowds, unlike the Aleague whom have a habit of always understating their crowds. How else could the afl gain such high numbers when we know they're not popular enough to do so?

The best method of lessening the gap between the aleague crowds and other codes is to claim the others are false. If we can't catch up, we'll pull them back to us.

The entire round is played on one channel, of course the channel will rate well, but that does not mean its more popular than the NRL, the fact is the NRL s spread over multiple channels and so their is no means of accurately comparing the two, now if we start looking at the ratings of the exclusive Fox games for both codes.....

There was a public admission that NRL do, around 12 months or so ago. IIRC it was one of the stadium owners who stated such.

Last Sunday Fox Footy had six shows out of the top 20 Fox shows, inlcuding the top two, both AFL games, and both shown on FTA in the states of one of the competing teams (getting very good FTA ratings for the respective states). The NRL game was third.

The AFL ratings for round one were 65% on round one for last season.

It was a record aggregate attendance for an opening round for the season, but it was only the second highest all time attendance for a round.

Achieving a 40k average for the first round was a very good result considering both the Suns and GWS had home games, in fact, it's an astonishing result.

We'll see this all season - this is why Fox paid the big bucks to the AFL.

Nope. They did it increase subscriptions, not ratings. The former increases revenue, the latter doesn't.

When AFL went head to head with NRL on Saturday night, NRL held the top two positions, by a decent margin over AFL
Then on Monday NRL got 317,000 with no competition, which was 50,000 more than the AFL's best of 267,000 on Friday with no competition.
The stats don't lie: NRL is a bigger sport to Fox than AFL

Yes, but what do sponsors get if there is NO advertising, even if AFL was 100K per game better than NRL?
