So I believe Jan Verslaijen's contract has or is expired today. Has any announcement been made as to who will take the reins of the AIS?

Apologies if it has, I missed it.

Here are a few candidates for the job.

Alex Tobin

Has worked in youth coaching for years. Has a professional playing background FFA loves.

Steve Corica

Youth coach in A league. Has a pro background, including a European career.

Vicky Linton

Former Tassie women's NTC coach, current W League coach, former pro coach in US women's league. Ambitious and has tertiary qualifications that FFA love. Very confident and articulate.

Arthur Papas

Has had success in results based top state league football. Has also coached at AIS. Young up and comer. Has tertiary qualifications.

Pim Verbeek

Rare that a results based coach goes moves to a development youth coach like he has in Morocco. Maybe finds Australia too far from Europe?

Robert Verbeek

Pim's brother. A very experienced youth coach in a diversity of settings. I read in an article he would like to coach in Australia.

Les Scheinflug

Former holder of the position. Very confident he can do the job well, but is currently out of favour with FFA hierarchy. Has gone public about what he perceives to be problems to the new NTC programme. In his short tenure as Socceroo senior coach has the best win/loss record along with Terry Venables and Verbeek.

Raul Blanco

Would probably apply on a ticket with Scheinflug. Both would be forced to do refresher FFA courses and may be unfairly failed in their appraisals.

Judy Free (Chips Rafferty)

One of the most talented coaches ever to grace Australian shores. By his own admission, too good for paid A League youth coaching positions. Brilliant playing career as a national geriatric champion, who by his own account, almost single handedly engineered his team's victory over a team of 17 former Socceroos on the pitch, all at the same time.
Berger would probably find Judy Free a big threat. He has been the only Aussie coach familiar with all the KNVB based National Curriculum before Han Berger and Rob Baan wrote it. Obviously all other coaches would withdraw their applications if they knew he was in the field, as they know they have no chance against him.
To other coaches' advantage, Judy Free is too addicted to trolling 442. Hence, he would be too busy for this prestigious position. All other coaches would be keeping their fingers crossed he won't be banned from 442 in the imminent future, which would give him time to write an application.

John Aloisi

Has the playing pedigree FFA love. Probably hasn't coached enough at A League youth level yet. Of all candidates may have the best playing career as a professional, playing in Serie A, La Liga and the EPL.

Dean May and other state NTC coaches

Dean is ambitious, confident in his own abilities, personable and overtly friendly, but probably hasn't the runs on the board in terms of style. His SA counterpart won the recent NTC Challenge for best style, so he could be a promising candidate.

Peter Le Roo

Seems to have impressed a number in Queensland since coaching in that state. Not as much known about him as some other candidates, but could be a dark horse. A quiet achiever to date.

David Abela

I imagine he would also apply for the job, but it may be too big a jump. Very good coach of coaches in terms of pedagogical presentation and style.

? Vidosic (Roar assistant coach)

Very hands on and has worked for some time in the HAL. Probably eyeing a bigger position.

Ad Derkson

Experienced KNVB staff coach. A big man, Derkson had a playing career as a Dutch pro. Supremely confident as a presenter, having also instructed and lectured in the Dutch army. Intimidated all top Australian coaches/players when instructing in Australia. Probably the biggest presence in person, and the biggest personality of all candidates, apart from the unique and inimitable Judy Free.

Gary Van Egmond

Would've thought he was a favourite , but has just returned to results based senior A League coaching. It would be a surprise if he applied.

Arie Schans

KNVB staff coach, who has coached as a development coach all over the world and coached at professional senior level in a number of settings. Superb presenter and communicator with profound knowledge. Probably too old at 60.
CV probably only exceeded by Judy Free as a development coach, or possibly the Verbeeks. Like Robert Verbeek, would be open to offers in Australia.

Ron Smith

Another previous incumbent. Maybe he will apply again? Has participated in 442 Performance section.

GCU Youth Coach (whoever he is?)

They have won Youth League for two years in a row. Berger isn't worried about results in this age group, so it may not necessarily be an asset for him.

Stubbins filled in briefly last year when Versleijen and Van Egmond were away with Young Socceroos so that makes sense. I personally don't think he would be a good choice. Great with seniors, not with kids.

There are lots of very well placed Australian youth coaches who could take the spot, I would actually love it to be Tony Vidmar.

Of the NTC coaches really there is only Milo from ACTAS who has the suitable experience for such a role since he was an AIS coach way back in the mid 90s with Ron Smith. Most of the others have only been in their role for a couple of years and are still learning. Someone like Vidmar at SASI has had pretty good success but he has only been coaching for something like 2.5 years, for a position like the AIS job you would ideally want someone who has been in youth development coaching for closer to 10 years or at least has been coaching at some level for that period of time. Kenny Lowe from WA I would put in the same bracket as Vidmar, he has been doing it at little longer but still wouldn't have the experience for me to take on the head coach role. Vidmar and Lowe would be best served being given assistant roles with the U17s/U20s for the next couple of cycles while continuing with their NTC squads then in 4-5 years time they would have adequate experience for the head coaching roles.

Tobin was considered to be a pretty decent coach by a number of coaches around the country in a development sense. These included a pool of coaches including Tony Vidmar, Carl Veart, Steve Corica, Kevin Muscat, Tony Vidmar, as well as NTC and W league coach Vicky Linton, and Dean May.

Then again, these coaches may never have seen anyone of your exalted status take some youth footballers for a training session? I don't think any of these guys knocked back paid A League youth coaching positions either.

It depends on what Milo from ACTAS has learnt in the last 10 years?

Trends/practices change. They don't remain static.

With all the experience in the world, if one uses faulty football methodology on the training ground, it is not as useful as it could be.

What is Ron Smith doing now, Football God?

If you know the ACT set up, do you know Pat McCann?

And those who paid his wages at CCM thought otherwise.

Feel free to list players he developed in his two years as a youth coach.

Kenny Lowe deserves to be a smokey for the job, but I'd much prefer him to be taking up some kind of tech director role at Glory or Inglewood to oversee future young players.

Today i heard from another source that Tony Vidmar is another that has strong possibilities.

Pat McCann was the assistant technical director at Capital Football under the previous TD ( Ian Shaw ), not sure of his role these days under Royston Thomas but is still involved .

I feel that Milo would be a good appointment also as the.football.god. suggested. Not sure though if he wants the job, if he does he would have applied and Cockerrill would have reported it, NO?

Former Socceroo Kevin Muscat has been appointed interim coach with former Perth Glory and Australian Institute of Sport coach Ron Smith his assistant.

The link did not work for me, but Decentric wrote.

I know You should never assume but i did, that it would mean De Roo would be the AIS head coach also.
I responded to the topic then came back later to find it was gone altogether.
Any ideas what happened there Moderators?

And, de roos CV includes what exactly?

Now, according to krones (very reliable and trusted source:lol: ), the bloke has had some moderate success in FNQ, after replacing a red kelpie.

Other than that his CV appears to be bare. Some odds and ends jobs working in low div dutch clubs where, surprise surprise, Baan and Berger both had an association (how about that?) but none of these jobs involved hands on coaching.

Quite happy to be proven wrong re this bloke's experience......go for it.

I agree with you pretty much on this one Chips, there were some excellent names in that hat - specifically coaches who have experience & results whilst playing a technical variety of football. What is de Roos bringing that these other coaches aren't?
