We're paying good money (both on transfers and salaries), but I strongly suspect that a key issue is that when the player comes to visit the club he's met by Steve Bruce and Niall Quinn. Two men who played the game at the highest level and were highly respected in the game. With so many chairmen being businessmen, non-footballers, lacking in any kind of knowledge of the game, to have a bloke like Quinny as chairman of the club is an enormous bonus.

Sunderland will most likely be doing a bit more business before the deadline - one or two coming in, and a few going out (Healy to Coventry, Nosworthy to Hull and Collins to Stoke are all on the cards, plus Leadbitter, Edwards and Murphy on Ipswich's radar).

Collins to Stoke for 2.75 mill.
Leadbitter and Edwards to Ipswich, done deal. 4 million the pair.

I think Hull being Hull plays a fair part in them not being able to sign good players. I've been to some pretty crappy towns in my life - but most have redeeming factors - not so Hull. About the only good thing you can say about Hull is that it's not Grimsby.

Grimsby is dire. I spent some time at Beverley which is a few miles north of Hull so I have a soft spot for them. Probably the worst places I've been to is Bradford Shipley and Leeds. Though parts of Manchester are dire as well.

Very dull. I'm stunned, I thought it was going to really go off late on with Everton splashing the Lescott cash and a major knock-on effect from that.

Strange thing is - after all this summer's transfers my club is now short of first team players, and I was talking to a West Ham supporter earlier who was lamenting his sides lack of strikers... Makes you wonder why more business wasn't done. GFC must be scaring the pants off some people.

With Manchester you're never too far away from somewhere half-decent, same with Bradford/Leeds, there's places to go - places to be... With Hull, you're miles from anywhere. It becomes a case of 'how can I get back to Leeds, which may be a dump, but is a huge step up from this remote dump."

Disappointed. But I guess that happens every transfer window as an Arsenal supporter. Again we are very thin in the defensive area of our team. Couple of injuries and our first choice centre back will be Silvestre... I don't think anyone needs any clarification on why that is VERY bad. Also who the hell is back up for Song in DM??? No one else has the quality defensive mentality he has and can really step up in that position. He's gone for a month thanks to the ACN, then what??

I think we have a great squad but seriously, Arsene cannot keep hoping we are going to have an injury free season. We are notoriously fragile. Diaby will stub his toe getting out of bed one morning and be out for a month. Gallas will have a breakdown, Vermaelen will murder someone(he has that hitman look about him), Song will contract Malaria like Kolo did... We will pick up injuries, we will have players out again like every other season. We have plenty of cover in attack, like 75% of our squad are attackers. But I just can't see any logical reasons that we didn't pick up another defender, or at least a DM who can at least drop back to CB if really needed.

Maybe we are just broke?

Didn't think that applied to the Prem.

You're lads came out of the day in good shape - most of Xisco's salary off the books for the remainder of the season, Lovenkrands in, and no useful players lost - chances of promotion just went up about 50%.

Not sure if it applies to the prem deffo does to us though. Apparently we get two Spuds on loan as part of the Bassong deal.

Nice piece of business by you guys selling Carlos Edwards and Grant Leadbitter for 4 million pounds

Since senderos did not leave we hardly need a cb, we could do with some cover for our midfield especcially if cameroon qualify for ACF whilst that does not look that likely.

for CB we have
gallas, vermaeleen, senderos, djourou, silvestrie and Song if needed i think thats more than enough.

Lescott probably!! He probably saw the writing on the wall where all the old City players are going out of the club and Hughes is moulding/buying his own side. With an open cheque book and the manager buying up talent left, right and centre, anyone pre-Hughes would be entitled to be nervous and have itchy feet.

You serious? He knows he is never going to get a game with Lescott, Richards, and Toure all in front of him. He didnt want to settle for a bitpart role. At Villa, his main competition is Carlos Cuellar and Curtis Davies. Much easier to make the 11.

Edwards - injured for 2 years, bottle gone, but he'll do alright at CCC level. We're actually getting nothing like the 1.35 mill that has been reported - it's all based on appearances.

2.6 mill for Leadbitter is hilarious though. Keano always loved him - but that price is outrageous. He'll run his guts out and get a few spectacular goals - but he's nowhere near that price range.

Never mind, we'll take it.

2 million for Halford, 2 mill for McShane, 2.75 for Collins - Bruce and Quinn should be up for daylight robbery!

I think he will be successful. Hull has certainly revitalised the forward and midfield line. They lost Turner but brought in two CD fellows with a lot to prove. They should avoid the drop.

Vennegor of Hesselink was released by Celtic because he wasn't up to the job of SPL football - that says it all to me.

Defensively, they've lost Turner - a man referred to by Hull supporters as the best player they've ever had - and replaced him with 2 defenders who couldn't get into the side at Sunderland or Stoke last season.

They will drop like a stone.

Only time will tell. With Hunt and that Ghiad character, Vennie will have better service and more chances to bury the ball in the back of the opposition net. Turner had his head turned (sorry about the pun) and had to go. McShane fitted in well before. The former Stoke man has experience, height and something to prove. So we will gain something from the exchange. I believe Hull's saving grace is that there are 4 teams worse than them in the league plus they have been battle hardened as well. But only time will tell. The tigers need to take points of the strugglers and pinch a few from the middle guys. They are in a better position to do so now than what they were in the latter half of last season.....fingers crossed.;)

I see Birmingham, Portsmouth, Wigan, Bolton, Blackburn, Wolves and Burnley struggling along with Hull. I also see Hull having been in a relegation fight being stronger for the experience and better equipped to avoid the drop. Blackburn will probably pull through but with the managers in charge of Wolves (failure at EPL level), Portsmouth, Bolton and Wigan these clubs will really struggle. Hull needs to get points of all of these clubs. These clubs are like the third teir of the EPL.
