I saw the tournament in Morocco being advertised today on Eurosport in a pub in Stockholm.
Considering the times the matches will be played in Europe and Africa it will be massive exposure if you get past the Mexicans. It is already massive.

Western Sydney Wanderers’ Asian Champions League triumph creates huge buzz on social media
Carly Adno

ON the field and off it, the Wanderers’ journey has been one of the most extraordinary stories in Australian sport.

Two A-League grand final appearances in their first two seasons of existence got people talking, but when the Western Sydney club won the Asian Champions League against Al Hilal, at the first attempt, their brand exploded globally.

And Twitter has the stats to prove it.

In the six weeks since the A-League season kicked off the Wanderers have received an extraordinary 10 million Tweet impressions. That’s higher than any other club in any sport across Australia this entire year, including both the AFL and NRL grand finalists.

What’s more, the club achieved an engagement rate - that includes mentions, favourites, retweets and clicking on a link or photo - of 8.5 per cent over the same period.

To put that figure into context, the Wanderers’ engagement rate was higher than Real Madrid, Manchester United and the San Francisco Giants, who won World Series in the same time period.

Wanderers head of marketing and communications, Mark Jensen, says the club has three main priorities - to engage, to inform and share.

“During the ACL campaign we used a lot of graphics and images that captured the emotion of the tournament from the players and fans perspective, as well as behind-the-scenes content that allowed fans to become closer to the team, especially when we are playing internationally,” he said.

“Communication with our fans and members is hugely important to us, Twitter compliments our digital delivery of information very well but it is also for a bit of fun.

“On game day we try and take the voice of the fan by being in the moment, informative and provocative. Sometimes it is fun to poke the proverbial bear with a stick, you have to know your audience but also know how far you want to take it on. We want a positive experience when engaging with our followers – it follows our club culture – to be for and with the people of Western Sydney.”

Next month the Wanderers will travel to Morocco to take part in the Club World Cup, which will extend their brand to even more corners of the globe.

“When we had a large Saudi following for the ACL final we engaged with them which clocked us some huge numbers as a result,” Jensen said.

“We will do this again for the FIFA Club World Cup against Cruz Azul and Real Madrid, who are monsters on Twitter.”

lulz at that article insinuating that the WSW marketing team had anything to do with the Twitter boom during the ACL final. It was all the Saudi Al Nassr fans and that new Saudi WSW Fan Twitter page that generated all the traffic.
The official WSW did nothing special at all.

Good news that NRMA Insurance has increased its sponsorship to include signage at the NYL and W-League games as well as sleeve sponsorship on the A-League shirt and has signed on for another 3 years.

Wanderers is now receiving over $3m pa in sponsorship for their playing strip alone.

Additional to the sponsorship NRMA Insurance intends to spend $3.7m on supporting grass roots football in Western Sydney.

This.

WSF had 7 times as many visitors in the month the ACL final took place (edit: compared to the usual monthly average), with 1/3rd of the traffic from Saudi Arabia the other 2/3rds from Australia and the usual small handful from USA, England, the EU & Japan.

Clearly I'm a social media genius because someone on a Saudi Arabian football forum linked to my site over there.

Can't believe the bad luck we had over in Africa. But then again, I can't believe the luck we had in the final in Asia. Guess you just have to take it and move on. Won the prem in our first year. In the grand final the first two years. Win the Asian cup at our first attempt. More than enough to smile about during a rough patch. And it is pretty rough.

Thanks mack. A few questions for clarification:

Yojiro Takahagi - is he contracted for ACL only? I can't see him in your list at all.
Nick Kalmar - he is contracted for the ACL too, yes?
Kearyn Baccus - his full team deal is until end of 16/17, yes?
Matthew Spiranovic - he is the Australian marquee, yes?

Also does anyone know if we can make Appiah disappear or something? I would love to see Kalmar on a full contract.

No. When the FFA owned the club we spent the salary cap plus $600k per season on Ono. Now we are spending the salary cap plus a reported $450k on Spira. If Yojiro is moved to marquee then we will have the ability to spend more on squad players.

I want to ask Wanderers fans who are sticking by Popovic and don't want him sacked a serious question. At what point would you sack Popovic if our bad form continues?
Would you do it this season or would you write off this season completely and give him next season to turn things around?
Personally I would sack him as I have seen enough and I just believe there is absolutely no excuse for the position we are currently in, but again I want to hear from those who disagree and would like to know at what point would you say enough is enough.

You aren't getting relegated. It's whether he should try to build towards ACL or call in one of the usual suspects. Farina, Kosmina etc

Well i would hope if Popa was to get the sack then we go for someone from overseas instead of managers like Farina and Kosmina.
We already know what those two offer and it simply isn't good enough especially Farina.

I wouldn't sack popa. You may say it's living in the past but let's not forget in 2 and half seasons we have been minor premiers, 2 grand finals and Asian champions. Yes he has stuffed up lately but it is his first manager position (not including being assistant) so he is learning also.
If he was sacked I would guess rudan will take over.
As for the season, yes it's a write off. Build towards the acl games and next season

I'd re-assess at the end of the season, by that time acl will be into the knockout stages and enough time to see what Popovic can do with the new recruits.
