Wouldnt it be like Libya or Egypt now?

Probably just turn into a Middle Eastern Somalia. I don't think Russia, or Iran will allow that to happen though.

I think potentially worse than Somalia, much more diverse. I agree about Russia and Iran.

And I think Israel would prefer a fascist, terrorism-sponsoring Assad-run state over an Al Qaida-run Syria.

Did you even watch the video you posted? He didn't say it was the sole reason, he said it was a contributing factor. That economic factors caused by the displacement of people in Syria because of a prolonged drought most likely caused by climate change facilitated the Syrian revolution.

For what its worth

The Oscar Pistorius trial is the high profile celebrity murder trial that society needed to have once every 20 years now that OJ Simpson's trial is all but forgotten

Its just that I happen to live long enough to see an event like this happen all over again

for what its worth I wanted OJ Simpson to be innocent in the 90s when his trial was going on, I loved Nordberg in the Naked Gun movies. Plus guys like OJ Simpson and Michael Jordan stuck out in a world and had to work twice as hard in a world which was very white dominant... which is what the world still is :s

Zimbos might know, alawites are an off shoot of shia Islam so they probably disagree with Sunnis on the succession of Mohammad. From what I've heard from other Muslims, Alawites are closer to Christians.

I don't think it's as clear cut as Alawites vs Sunni.

@condemned Yeah Michael Jordan had to work twice as hard as any white guy in a black dominated sport, keep up the anti white talk.

I am not so clear on Alawites myself. They are a very secretive group and not much about them is known in the wider in the general outside community. Their name is derived from Ali RA who was the last Caliph in Islam. They are an off shoot of Shias but slightly more extreme.

Alawites take a step further in the veneration of Ali RA, allegedly investing him with divine attributes. Other specific elements such as the belief in divine incarnation, permissibility of alcohol, celebration of Christmas and Zoroastrian new year makes Alawite Islam highly suspect in the eyes of many orthodox Sunnis and Shiites.

The point was that ricecrackers posted a video in which Friedman essentially called him an idiot.

I don't know enough about Thomas Friedman to comment extensively on his politics, but it seems to me that his Pulitzer Prize winning works all stemmed from pandering to upper-class american interests. Also anyone who uses the phrase "Radical Centerist" without a hint of parody should probably be pushed in front of a speeding bus.

To be fair, a black man with large...hands....is a stereotype.

The deadline for Russian militants to leave occupied Ukrainian buildings has passed. No surprise there, it's not like Ukraine can use force and incur the wrath of Russia.

They've deployed the Bluefin-21 Submarine so either they must think they're close or they've given up on finding a signal any more being that it's been 6 days since they picked up any signal.

Russia has apparently amassed 40,000 soldiers, + armour, tanks & aircraft on Ukraine's Eastern Border. This has come after men without insignia, but wearing Russian uniforms have had a shootout with Ukrainian Police in a town, not 100km from the Russian border with Ukraine.

Apparently the Ukrainian government have given a deadline of Monday morning Ukraine time for pro-Russian "protesters" to leave the Slavyansk Government buildings they've taken over. 0600 GMT is the deadlines, which means it's now 9:05pm in Sydney, it's not 11:05 GMT. So stay tuned for any developments. I get the feeling this is edging closer and closer to all out war with Russia. It's going to be a Russo-Georgian conflict, but on a much larger and bloodier scale.

The deadline is well past. The Ukraine know that they can't get into direct conflict with Russia because the Russians will wipe the floor with them unless they can get other European nations to come to their aid.

Im fairly certain that Shiites have a different pilgrimage that they do in Iran. I'm not hundred percent sure. I have seen them at the Umrah, not so sure if to them Hajj is regarded as the same as it is for Sunnis.
