A couple did back then but no one believed them due to previously being caught for doping. There was also an incident in which Lance tested positive but managed to get off due to the "saddle sores" excuse.

USADA built a really strong case so it was pretty hard to shy away from testifying. I also think it is due to a lot of the guys coming to the end of their career as well.

Seriously - great job its finally over re Lance.
Makes you wonder how many more have benfitted in the past and profitted.
Stinks badly at UCI how many individuals would have got something out of this over the years.
Long way to go yet I expect.

I signed up with some friends who have done it the last couple years. They promised me that they would just be cruising along.
I was suspecting I may be near collapse at the peak height halfway through, practically my doorstep. I'm much more comfortable with my ability after I rode about 40km from my house through a lot rougher terrain in the bush to Woronora Dam. A few more rides like that and I will be ready. Then I just have to service my bike a bit so I that I can save energy by using all 21 gears instead of just 3 on the largest middle chain ring and put some low profile tires on.

Tainted cyclist Lance Armstrong had Livestrong charity lobby on Capitol Hill on his behalf
With pressure building in PED probe, Lance Amstrong sent lobbyist from Livestrong charity to Capitol Hill that some feel crossed boundaries in unethical way.
Lance Armstrong has plenty of friends in high places, and he wasn’t going to go down without a fight.

With pressure building from the United States Anti-Doping Agency investigation, the Lance Armstrong Foundation sent a lobbyist to Capitol Hill this summer to raise questions about USADA’s financing, mission and authority — even though USADA’s probe had nothing to do with the charity’s mission to assist cancer patients and their families.

But the lines between Armstrong, Livestrong and Armstrong’s sponsors have long been blurred, and separating them is virtually impossible. Armstrong may not literally get a cut of every yellow Livestrong bracelet sold in a Nike store or on the Nike website, or from a Radio Shack campaign asking customers to donate to Livestrong at the checkout counter, but as Outside magazine reported earlier this year, Livestrong and his charity are like “conjoined twins.”

The relationship between Armstrong and his foundation has been under a microscope since Oct. 10, when USADA released its explosive report explaining why it stripped Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles and banned him for life. The International Cycling Union announced on Monday that it would not appeal USADA’s decision, effectively ending Armstrong’s long relationship with competitive cycling. Several of Armstrong’s sponsors, led by Nike and including Anheuser-Busch, Trek Bicycles, Radio Shack and Oakley, announced last week that they were cutting ties with the cyclist, most adding that they would stick with his charity.

Meanwhile, Livestrong’s lobbying efforts on behalf of its founder raised ethical red flags, according to Sandra Miniutti, a spokeswoman for Charity Navigator, a watchdog organization.

“It was definitely not an ‘ethical best practice,’ ” Miniutti told the Daily News on Tuesday. “What is the intent of donors when they donate money to a charity? In this case, it was not helping a celebrity founder take care of his problems.”

For its part, Nike produces a line of Livestrong apparel that it pays Armstrong to wear — yellow jerseys, shorts, backpacks. There are two Livestrong websites: Livestrong.org is the non-profit’s site; Livestrong.com is a for-profit content site, and those who donate sometimes confuse the two.

According to Outside, Nike agreed to pay Armstrong $7.5 million per year from its merchandise profits. He is paid a $200,000 speaking fee per appearance and often receives perks to go along with it. In August of 2009, according to Outside, he charged his usual speaking fee and got $100,000 worth of free NetsJet time for appearing at an inaugural charity ride, just one example of the extent of the symbiotic relationship between the cyclist and his charity.

Some donors have raised objections in the wake of the USADA report’s revelations.

One high-end donor who requested anonymity told the Daily News he wished the charity had been more transparent about the relationship between Armstrong and Livestrong. He said he believes the charity does good work, but he was furious when he learned that the non-profit was using donations to hire Patton Boggs to lobby against USADA.

A spokesman for Rep. Jose Serrano (D-NY) told the Wall Street Journal this year that Armstrong’s lobbyist, echoing talking points from the embattled cyclist’s lawyers, raised questions about the fairness of USADA’s investigation. Serrano was apparently targeted because he serves on the House Appropriations Committee. About two-thirds of USADA’s $14 million annual budget comes from the Office of National Drug Control Policy, which is funded by Congress.

Serrano spoke freely about his visit from Armstrong’s lobbyist earlier this year, but now — like Armstrong’s legislative allies — he is not saying much.

“The congressman has stopped talking about that,” said a Serrano spokesman. “So much has been made of (the meeting with the lobbyist). It was a routine meeting. He’s a baseball fan. He has nothing to add.”

Another lawmaker who was visited by the Patton Boggs lobbyist and Livestrong chief executive officer Doug Ulman, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.), is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Her spokesman declined comment, too.

The lobbying, however, apparently helped Armstrong’s cause; Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) and Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) are sponsoring legislation they say will make sure USADA’s process is fair and respects athletes’ due-process rights — once again echoing talking points Armstrong’s lawyers have used to discredit the anti-doping agency.

Katherine McLane, a Livestrong spokeswoman, told the Daily News on Tuesday that Livestrong regularly employs lobbyists to make cancer awareness a priority on Capitol Hill. She referred the Daily News to remarks she made in July — a statement that once again blurs the boundaries between Armstrong and Livestrong.

“We are very concerned and we have spoken publicly about the need for fairness and due process, and we hope Lance is given the opportunity for the due process any American deserves in this respect,” she said this summer.

Charity Navigator gives Armstrong’s foundation high marks for transparency, accountability and financial management. But that doesn’t assuage the donor who spoke to the Daily News.

“I don’t believe the Livestrong people are dumb enough to break any laws,” said the donor, who requested anonymity. “But if they were using my money to lobby against USADA, that would be inappropriate.”

Controversial Australian former cyclist Martin Vinnicombe claims a current high-level figure in the sport once helped him with an injection.

Vinnicombe has spoken about the crisis that continues to rock cycling following Lance Armstrong's lifetime ban.

Vinnicombe, a 1988 Olympic silver medallist, tested positive to steroids in 1991, but made a successful legal challenge against the case.

"There are still people existing in cycling at the moment, in powerful positions, (who) at one point in their careers were exposed to doping and knew about doping methods," Vinnicombe told the ABC's 730 Report.

The ABC said the anonymous man that Vinnicombe specifically referred to is now "a senior Australian cycling figure".

It was known you'd have a sudden drop in blood pressure, therefore you needed someone there to assist you," Vinnicombe said.

"At that time ... was a person I trusted and thought he would assist me and he did so.

"He was present in the room."

While Vinnicombe said he sometimes did not know what he was taking, he added: "I don't think it was water".

Olympic cycling gold medallist Dean Woods said he competed clean throughout his career, but added some Australian cyclists should be nervous about their pasts.

"I would think if anyone was involved in road cycling from the late `90s right up until say 2005-06, certainly there are probably a few nervous guys around," Woods said.

"If they're implicated, they should be held accountable."

The federal government has announced an independent inquiry into Cycling Australia and the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Agency are also looking into the sport.

"Today cycling above all else needs the truth," noted Australian anti-doping expert Michael Ashenden said.

"It needs accountability, for the people in charge of cycling to make sure that what they say is what they do.

"Every cyclist who comes forward and tells the truth is going to help us to get to that position."

Former Australian road professionals Matt White and Stephen Hodge have lost high-level roles in the sport after admitted they doped during their racing careers.

Breaking news.

Quote:
Mauro Santambrogio fails test for EPO at Giro d'Italia
Mauro Santambrogio (Vini Fantini) failed a test for banned blood-booster erythropoietin (EPO) on May 4, the opening day of the Giro d'Italia.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) confirmed the positive test on Tuesday, and the Italian has been suspended from competition.

"The decision to provisionally suspend this rider was made in response to a report from the WADA accredited laboratory in Rome indicating an Adverse Analytical Finding of EPO in his urine sample collected at the Giro d' Italia on 4th May 2013," said the UCI in a statement. Santambrogio has the right to request that his B sample is analysed.

Santambrogio won stage 14 of the Giro and eventually placed ninth overall behind winner Vincenzo Nibali (Astana).

Santambrogio's Vini Fantini team-mate Danilo Di Luca also failed a test for EPO in an out-of-competition test carried out prior to the Giro.

More later...
