Bid for $8m soccer stadium

28 Feb, 2008 10:01 PM

AN $8 million soccer stadium in Ballarat could provide a springboard for a regional Victorian A-League side and potentially a role in the 2018 World Cup, according to the Ballarat Red Devils president.

Andrew Burgess said a feasibility study into a stadium had begun and the club was keen to see it built at Morshead Park.

Mr Burgess said with a stadium capable of holding up to 10,000 people the Ballarat soccer community would be well placed to make a bid for a side in an expanded A-League competition and to host a team if the 2018 soccer World

Cup came to Australia.

Last week the Federal Government said it wanted Australia to host the 2018 competition and this week Mr Burgess met Federal Sports Minister Kate Ellis to discuss the proposed stadium.

A stadium development would require the support of local, state and federal governments.

It is hoped the Ballarat soccer community can raise $1 million towards the project.

In the event Australia were to host the cup, it would require making available a large number of high standard soccer pitches to the 32 teams competing.

Mr Burgess said with a dedicated soccer complex Ballarat could be on the radar of countries wanting to have a training and accommodation base outside a capital city.

Australia is also a chance to host the 2015 Asian Cup which would also require a large number of training bases.

In the short-term, the Red Devils are preparing to make a bid to compete in a summer Premier League competition proposed by the Football Federation of Victoria and scheduled to start later this year.

Mr Burgess said the Red Devils would make a bid for a Premier League licence which was likely to involve a six-figure sum.

He said Ballarat was better placed to make a bid for a regional Victorian A-League side than other contenders, such as Geelong.

"Geelong is in pole position with population but having said that this region's football is 100 per cent more organised than Geelong football is at this time," he said.

Would be absolutely fantastic for the city. I hope the city council realise what a big deal this could be.

I haven't heard a thing about this alleged new stadium for a long time now, though.

Ballarat could host Asian Cup internationals
TOM MCILROY
02 Jul, 2012 10:54 PM

INTERNATIONAL soccer matches as part of the Asian Cup competition could be played at Ballarat’s new soccer stadium in 2014, potentially providing a tourism and sporting boost to the city.
Football Federation Victoria chief executive officer Mark Rendell added momentum to the prospect this week, saying the new purpose-built stadium facility at Morshead Park would be considered for training and matches if its pitch was of a suitable standard.

“Ballarat would be a superb location to host visiting Asian national teams as they arrive early to acclimatise and prepare for the AFC Asian Cup in 2015,” Mr Rendell said.

“I understand that the new stadium is planned to be in great shape by then, but much will depend on the quality of the pitch, the standard of media facilities, lighting and the proximity of quality accommodation as well.”

National teams are expected to arrive in Australia up to three weeks before the likely January 9 start to the competition, giving Ballarat the potential to see teams including Japan, China, UAE, India and South Korea training in the city in the lead-up to the tournament.

“If a pre-Asian Cup international friendly were to be broadcast and played in Ballarat, it would attract tens of millions of television viewers and would no doubt put Ballarat on the world sporting stage,” Mr Rendell said.

He said Football Federation Victoria would work with clubs around Victoria to develop proposals for the event.

Ballarat Red Devils vice-president Andrew Burgess said the momentum for internationals in Ballarat could bring enormous benefits.

“This really is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get football, and more broadly the City of Ballarat, well and truly front and centre in Australia and for that matter Asia,” he said.

“We need to get on the front foot now and start the work, so that we can in two-and-a-half years look back and say we did whatever it took to get this done.”
