The Wanderers National Youth League side have today been defeated 2-0 by the Melbourne Heart at Cook Park, St Mary’s.
Goals in the 43rd and 58th minutes to the Heart gave them the victory.
Coach Trevor Morgan took a number of positives out of the match but will be looking for more from his young Wanderers.
“It was a couple of mistakes that cost us today,” Morgan said. “They played for possession and pushed forward where they can and two good pieces of play off the back of our errors gave them the win.
“It was good having a few of the A-League squad back but we need to use them more and give them some more chances. Tahj and Kwabena were making room down the flanks which was good to see.”
The NYL squad was boosted for their first fixture with the addition of Hyundai A-League squad members Jerrad Tyson in goals as well as Iacopo La Rocca, Shannon Cole and Tahj Minniecon. On top of this Kwabena Appiah-Kubi and Joey Gibbs are eligible to play in the Youth League so were added to the starting 11 by Coach Trevor Morgan.
The first half was played from end to end with the home side dominating possession. Both Minniecon and Appiah-Kubi continually looked dangerous as they switched playing both left and right pushing forward and creating opportunities.
The deadlock was broken in the 43rd minute with the Heart scoring through striker Evangelos Batsis. Batsis received the ball from a beautifully timed chip and after one touch to control the ball the number nine rocketed the into the bottom left hand corner of the net.
Only one minute of additional time was added with the Heart heading to the rooms 1-nil in front. As the teams came back for the second half Iacopo La Rocca was substituted off with Stepjan Paric coming on.
The 58th minute saw the Heart extend their lead through Captain Joshua Groenewald. Some messy defence by the Wanderers saw Groenewald intercept the ball and after smartly controlling the ball the captain cut back on the inside and struck the ball pushing it past Tyson to put the Heart up 2-nil.
As the official signalled the goal, Coach Morgan made a further two changes with Appiah-Kubi and Gibbs coming off and Daniel Barac and Nicholas Olsen coming on.
The final change was made for the Wanderers with goal keeper Tyson coming off replaced by Aaron Liddell.
With the Wanderers pressing forward there were a number of late chances but the comeback couldn’t happen with the Heart holding on for a 2-nil victory.
Wanderers line-up: J Tyson (GK), A Quinn, J Williams, J Green, S Cole, I La Rocca, K Appiah-Kubi, J McGing, J Gibbs, Y Perkatis ©, T Minniecon. Substitutes: D Barac, N Olsen, S Paric, Z Elrich, A Liddell (GK)

Had Broxham, Gallagher, Cernak, Theo, Thomas, Diogo, and another ( article mentions that there were 7 in total). Don't know who the last guy would've been, I see no mention in the article. Happy to see that Nakic got himself on the score sheet. Hope he has a big season in the NYL, might be able to squeeze himself into a senior spot. Have two spots now, but before Allsopp's retirement, Ange had said that the open spot could be given to a NYL player. And, since this guy is a NYL player, I was left wondering why Cristaldo was with the senior players pre-game on Friday night. There as a last minute emergency or something? Quote:Heart Youth face Mariners test Friday, 26 October 2012 8:58 PM Melbourne Heart FC’s National Youth League side commenced its 2012/13 campaign in style last week against league newcomers Western Sydney Wanderers, but face a more difficult test against Central Coast Mariners tomorrow. Heart kicked off the new campaign on a high at Cook Park last Saturday against the Wanderers, with Evan Batsis and Josh Groenewald netting in each half for the Heart in a dominant performance to give Joe Palatsides’ side a 2-0 victory. But the Mariners, the Youth League’s reigning champion, are likely to offer a more demanding test at John Cain Memorial Park tomorrow. The Mariners knocked off the Newcastle Jets 2-1 in their first match, illustrating the champions haven't lost any potency, despite only retaining four players from last season. With both teams starting brightly and aiming for two consecutive victories, the match is sure to be hotly contested. Heart's midfielder Golgol Mebrahtu may make a comeback through the youth team, which will strengthen the side's attacking options. Heart will need to be cautious of the visitor’s potential and John McLafferty’s new look side, although Palatsides is confident his side will produce a strong showing on home soil. The match kicks off at 3pm on Saturday 27 October at John Cain Memorial Park, Thornbury. Melbourne Heart FC squad: Will Abbott, Stipo Andrijasevic, Evan Bastis, Alistair Bray (GK), Nichloas Epifano, Josh Groenewald, Ersin Kaya, Chris Maynard (GK), Stefan Mauk, Andrew Mullett, Sam Mitchinson, Phil Petreski, Paulo Retre, Jeremy Walker, Zac Walker, Golgol Mebrahtu (To be confirmed) http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/melbourneheart/news-display/Heart-Youth-face-Mariners-test/51393

Quote:Mariners fight back to beat Heart Saturday, 27 October 2012 6:56 PM A strong Central Coast Mariners side recorded a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Melbourne Heart in their National Youth League clash at John Cain Memorial Park on Saturday. In an eventful game, the Heart took the lead early through Stipo Andrijasevic before a powerful Mitchell Duke strike and a cool finish from Daniel Bragg put the visitors ahead before half-time. Despite the sending off of Stefan Mauk midway through the second half, the Heart had several chances to equalise but could not take them as the Mariners held on for a well-deserved win. Heart kicked off in blustery conditions and began the game brightly thanks largely to the influence of speedy winger Golgol Mebrahtu. The former Gold Coast United man was the home side's most dangerous player, with his skilful runs causing Mariners left-back Michael Neill all sorts of problems. And the 22-year-old played a decisive role in the opening goal, with his ball into the box eventually finding its way to Andrijasevic at the back post. The winger was able to calmly place the ball into the far corner to give his side the lead after just five minutes. Mebrahtu should have added his name to the scoresheet seven minutes later after he was found inside the box by Jeremy Walker but his first-time shot fizzed over the bar. The Heart were soon made to pay for that missed chance when Mariners striker Duke slammed the ball into the top corner after dribbling past two defenders to level the scores 15 minutes in. The home side then made matters worse for themselves after 31 minutes when a horribly misplaced pass from defender Andrew Mullett left Bragg one-on-one with Alastair Bray. The midfielder kept his cool, delicately lobbing the Heart 'keeper from the edge of the area to give his side the lead. Senior midfielders Adriano Pellegrino and Oliver Bozanic started to control the game for the Mariners and, despite losing Duke to injury, the away side went into half-time ahead. The second half was a much tamer affair with a string of substitutions not allowing either side to enjoy any rhythm in possession. However, it all changed when Heart were presented with two chances in a minute. Ersin Kaya saw his shot deflect away for a corner before Zac Walker volleyed just over the bar from 20 yards. It sparked the game into life, with the Mariners unable to take advantage of an even better chance to score on 64 minutes when Patrick Dixon broke clear of two markers on the edge of the box, only for his shot to be brilliantly saved by Bray. The Heart had more chances through a William Abbott header and an Andrijasevic strike but neither had any conviction and both were easily held by Mariners 'keeper David Bradasevic. But despite looking likely to score, the Heart were again their own worst enemy with Mauk picking up his second yellow card of the game for diving in the 77th minute. From there, the Mariners took control and despite presenting their opponents with some late chances, they were able to hold on for what was an encouraging win. Melbourne Heart 1 (Stipo Andrijasevic 5) Central Coast Mariners 2 (Mitchell Duke 15, Daniel Bragg 31) Melbourne Heart: 1. Alastair Bray, Jeremy Walker (Evan Batsis '85), Sam Mitchinson, Andrew Mullett, Abbott, Josh Groenewald, Evan Batsis (Zac Walker), Stefan Mauk, Golgol Mebrahtu (Ersin Kaya '45), Philip Petreski & Stipo Andrijasevic. Quote:Five-star Reds outclass AIS Sunday, 28 October 2012 2:25 PM A stunning first half has helped Adelaide United to a comprehensive 5-1 belting of the AIS in Sunday's National Youth League clash at Burton Park. Josh Barresi scored early after an uncharacteristic Jordan Elsey defensive blunder, but the Reds responded fiercely, with four goals in the space of 16 minutes stunning the visitors. Evan Kostopoulos netted a brace to lead the home side's charge. AIS's day started perfectly when, on seven minutes, Baresi picked United captain Elsey's pocket in Adelaide's defensive third and with only daylight separating him and Reds 'keeper John Hall, closed in unmarked and coolly pushed it past the shot-stopper. But Adelaide's response was ferocious. Miscommunication in the AIS defence saw United draw level in the 14th minute when Kostopoulos saw an opportunity to pounce after receiving a pass from striker Thomas Briscoe and scored, diving forward and ending up on his stomach. Then 22 minutes in, Fabian Barbiero came agonisingly close to giving the home side the lead when his curling long-range strike was kept out by the diving, outstretched left glove of AIS custodian Lucas Spinella. Moments later, with the resulting corner, Dion Kirk cracked a shot just wide. Kostopoulos would not be denied though when, on 27 minutes, he netted his second from an acute angle, streaming down the right flank and thumping a low shot past Spinella. Less than a minute later, Briscoe caught the visitors' defence totally off-guard when he helped Adelaide net their third in rather fortunate style. Briscoe's miscue took a deflection off AIS's Jeremy Tshongo, which wrong-footed Spinella, who watched on helplessly as the ball rolled past him, slowly into the back of the net for an own goal. The destruction was not over just yet. In the 30th minute, Briscoe capped an amazing quarter-hour of football when he nodded home the Reds' fourth after being on the end of a perfect swinging cross from Allan Welsh. Barbiero almost made it five in the half when his 40th-minute effort flew inches wide to the left. Thoroughly outclassed and trailing 4-1 at half-time, AIS, led by skipper Scott Galloway, showed renewed ticker after the interval, but never looked like making any inroads. United faced tougher resistance in the second half as the opportunities dried up. Adelaide substitute John Karatzas's headed goal in the 75th minute following a rebound off a Spinella save capped a superb day at the office for the hosts, who were ruthless and aggressive in notching their first win of the season. “We were very happy with the improvement from last week's performance in that we dominated the game for long periods of time, keeping possession and creating many chances which resulted in goals," Reds Coach Michael Valkanis said. "Our organisation in regards to how we defend as a unit was better and we improved in our pressing which created turnovers in our attacking half putting AIS under pressure." "Another positive was actually taking our chances, scoring goals and being aggressive in attack and also in regaining possession throughout the match.” Adelaide United 5 (Kostopoulos 14'/27', Tshongo 28' (og), Briscoe 30', Karatzas 75') AIS 1 (Barresi 8') Adelaide United: 1. Seems like some decent games being played in the NYL this year.
Went to a couple of NYL matches last year and thought the quality was quite good, so lets hope it continues to build. Having too much of a gap between the NYL and HAL will not do anyone any good.

Quote:Victory knock off Roar Melbourne Victory have made it two wins from as many matches in the National Youth League after a goal from skipper Jake Nakic sealed a 1-0 victory over Brisbane Roar in blustery conditions at Goodwin Park on Sunday. In a game of few genuine chances, Nakic's effort just before the interval was all Victory needed to secure back-to-back wins to start the NYL campaign, following on from last weekend's 3-0 win over Adelaide United. The captain put away a cross from lively winger Andrew Nabbout, who made a shock maiden Hyundai A-League appearance against the Roar at Suncorp Stadium two weeks ago. Gloveman Matthew Acton got a hand on it but it wasn't enough to stop Nakic's powerful low shot. Brisbane and Melbourne both fielded teams with plenty of A-League experience - 10 of the 22 starting players have already made their debuts at senior level. The cold, gusty conditions played havoc with both sides, and they took time to settle into a contest that saw few attacking opportunities early on. Brisbane's Ross Archibald and Rocky Visconte had their attempts deflected just after the quarter-hour mark, while the visitors' first opportunity was through Isaka Cernak, whose 28th-minute free-kick sailed over the bar from 20 yards out. One minute later, Victory looked in when Julius Davies played in Nakic close to the byline with a clever look-away pass. Nakic sent in a dangerous cross which hit Cernak at the far post, but the ball bobbled up and smacked his hand before trickling over the line, and the goal was ruled out. The hosts then ramped up the pressure, with George Lambadaridis going close with a stinging shot on 30 minutes that looked destined for the net, until it found a ricochet off a Melbourne defender. Nakic pounced four minutes from the break, which prompted a renewed push from Brisbane for their first goal - but it never came. After a raft of changes from both sides across the early stretches of the second half, the home side had their best chance at the 67-minute mark. A header across the box from substitute Kwame Yeboah found Nick Fitzgerald in a good position, but he blazed his shot just over the crossbar from close range. Seven minutes from time, Lambadaridis tested Melbourne goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas with a free-kick from just outside the box. It had some wild dip on it, but Thomas held his nerve. Brisbane Roar 0 Melbourne Victory 1 (Nakic 40) Brisbane Roar: 2. James Donachie (4. Lachlan Jackson 60), 5. George Lambadaridis, 6. Ross Archibald (c) (10. Kwame Yeboah 45), 7. Donghyun Do, 8. Luke O'Dea 45) http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/melbournevictory/news-display/Victory-knock-off-Roar/51497 Nakic seems like he is going to start pushing for a senior spot. Guy, from reports, had a great VPL season and has scored in our first 2 NYL matches. If he keeps having an impact on matches (also had an assist against the Reds), will be interesting to see how hard of a push he makes. Celeski and Broxham may need to watch out... Quote:Victory's magnificent seven Saturday, 3 November 2012 3:59 PM Melbourne Victory have consolidated top spot in the National Youth League with a 7-1 trouncing of the AIS in their Round 3 encounter at the AIS Athletics Track on Saturday afternoon. The Victory were impressive from the outside, mixing skill with speed and hard-running as the AIS struggled to gel and coughed up far too much possession against a red-hot attack. The day started poorly for the AIS with the loss of goalkeeper Lucas Spinella to a head knock after only five minutes and it got progressively worse. The Victory showed no mercy, with Julius Davies scoring with a curling free-kick in the 16th minute, before making it a double minutes later with a neat finish on the edge of the 18 yard box. The AIS struggled to put any attacking pressure on the visitors, who were happy to retain possession in the comfort of their lead. They went one better when Theo Markelis drew Spinella 's replacement Jordan Thurtell off his line and put it into an open goal from a tight angle. The AIS had some respite on the stroke of half-time when Bright Appiah hit a spinning ball along the turf past an outstretched Lawrence Thomas. The Victory went for the jugular in the second half, out-muscling, out-running and out-playing their opponents, who struggled for composure under the barrage of pressure. After a couple of golden opportunities went begging it did not take long for the goals to come as Isaka Cernak was left unmarked on the back post from a corner and duly headed past Thurtell five minutes after the break. Luke O'Dea heaped on further misery five minutes later with an impressive lofted shot from the left flank. In the 71st minute Luc Jeggo ran onto a ball on the right hand side of the box with speed to score the sixth before Andrew Nabbout capped off a fine performance with their seventh a minute later. Quote:Wanderers salvage a point against Adelaide Saturday, 3 November 2012 7:10 PM Western Sydney Wanderers have come from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw with Adelaide United at Campbelltown Stadium in Saturday's National Youth League action. The hosts trailed 2-0 after 68 minutes before goals to Zac Elrich and Jake McGing ensured them an even split of the points. It had appeared to be Adelaide's night after Evan Kostopoulos scored twice to hand the Reds a 2-0 half-time lead on a chilly evening at Campbelltown Stadium. But the Wanderers showed tremendous spirit and fight to pull back the deficit and grab their second point of the campaign. The Reds now have a win, a draw and a loss from three starts. Kostopoulos was one of three over-aged players used by Adelaide coach Michael Valkanis, along with Fabian Barbiero and Zenon Caravella. Their class was evident when Caravella and Kostopoulos combined for the first goal after 19 minutes. Caravella weaved his way into the box and let fly with a left-foot drive that struck the near post. Kostopoulos was quickest to react, tucking away the rebound to give the visitors a deserved lead. The Reds doubled their advantage in the 36th minute after Kostopoulos finished off some good work from Awer Mabil down the right to score his second. The Wanderers struggled for cohesion and fluency on the bumpy surface but almost pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time. Adelaide goalkeeper Nicholas Harpas spread himself to twice deny the Wanderers from close range and ensure his side went to the break two goals to the good. Western Sydney picked up where they left off after the break A lovely long ball out of defence from Stepjan Paric found Zak Elrich en route to the penalty area. The No.7 did wonderfully well to chest the ball to ground while holding off the defence before rolling the ball past Harpas. McGing completed the comeback when he swept the ball home from close range with 14 minutes left. Both sides pressed for a winner but had to be content to share the points after a pulsating, end-to-end contest. Quote:Patrick Sexton, Omnisport Cartanos wins it for Heart Saturday, 3 November 2012 6:47 PM A last-gasp goal from substitute Andrew Cartanos gave Melbourne Heart a 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar in an entertaining National Youth League match at John Cain Memorial Park on Saturday. After going ahead in the opening minute thanks to a Zac Walker strike, the Heart were made to pay for some wasteful finishing when Do Dong-Hyun levelled the scores in the 22nd minute. Both sides had chances to win the game in the closing stages and it was Cartanos who made his count, scoring in the 93rd minute to give Heart the win. The result ensures the Heart move ahead of Brisbane on the Youth League table and stay within striking distance of league leaders and cross-town rivals Melbourne Victory. The home side enjoyed a perfect start to the game with a goal inside the opening minute after Brisbane were caught on the counter attack. Picking up possession in midfield, Nicholas Epifano was able to play a precise through ball to Walker who deftly chipped an on-rushing Nicholas Tubbs. The goal gave the Heart confidence and they were unlucky not to score another when pacey winger Golgol Mebrathu saw his one-on-one effort with Tubbs saved. The Ivorian then had another great opportunity to score after he was once again played through on goal but his shot was hooked off the line brilliantly by Kenneth Dougall. Despite the early set-back, Brisbane were slowly able to work themselves back into the game with winger Do looking particularly dangerous. And it was the South Korean who levelled the scores in the 22nd minute following a long pass out of defence by Yuji Takahashi. Do was able to control the ball before shrugging off Jeremy Walker and scoring past Alastair Bray from a tight angle. The goal gave the away side momentum and they began to dominate the game, with a brilliant double save from Bray in the 40th minute, to first deny Do and then Anthony Proia, keeping the scores level at half-time. The second half was a much scrappier affair with neither side able to enjoy any meaningful possession of the ball in the opening stages. Heart had the half’s most meaningful chance in the 70th minute after substitute Evangelos Batsis found himself with time to turn in the box but his shot was just wide of Tubbs' far post. The opportunity seemed to spark the game into life with Brisbane immediately going down the other end to create a chance of their own through Proia but his shot from inside the box was hit straight at Bray. Three minutes later the ever-present Do forged another chance for his side after cutting in from the left before playing a brilliant reverse ball to Jordan Lambi but he couldn't find a way past Bray who saved well. Do soon had a chance to score himself after another brilliant run left him with only Bray to beat from a tight angle but his shot was turned away for a corner. The game appeared to be heading towards a draw before a marauding run from Cartanos saw him beat several Roar defenders and get inside the box before unleashing a driven shot from the tightest of angles to score a brilliant winner for the Heart. Quote:Daniel Colasimone, Omnisport Roar beat spirited AIS 4-2 Saturday, 10 November 2012 5:15 PM A waterlogged pitch may have delayed kick-off by 30 minutes at Goodwin Park but the rainy conditions couldn't dampen the spectacle for fans as the Brisbane Roar overcame a spirited AIS team 4-2 in their National Youth League clash. Early goals from Benjamin Liftin and Do Dong Hyun for the Roar were cancelled out by efforts from the Institute's Alexander Gersbach and Scott Galloway, but Brisbane took the advantage into the break as Anthony Proia scored in the shadows of half-time before Kenneth Dougall sealed an entertaining match in the second half. In the early stages, the Roar seemed to be coping better with the super slow pitch while the AIS lost possession on several occasions due to the ball simply stopping dead as the home side kept their passing simple. As the rain intensified, the AIS were too tentative in possession, giving the ball away twice just outside of their own area. The Roar's nifty number nine, Liftin, was in no mood to forgive such sloppiness, though, picking up the loose ball before sliding it past Jordan Thurtell to give Brisbane the lead after 20 minutes. After conceding, the AIS upped their attacking intensity, and three minutes later, some deft build-up play down the right saw Gersbach arrive late in the box to head down powerfully enough into the sodden pitch to beat Fraser Chalmers in the Roar goal. Just three minutes later Brisbane were back in front as lively South Korean left back Hyun curled in what was probably meant to be a cross from way out on the left. Amazingly, the ball ended up in the back of the AIS net after Thurtell let it slip through his fingers. Once again, the AIS upped the ante. Bright Appiah put pressure on the Roar's big central defender, James Donachie, who allowed himself to be stripped of possession. Appiah raced through to find himself one-on-one with Chalmers, but shot well over. The action never stopped in a frantic half of football. After 33 minutes, Hyun continued to torment the AIS goalkeeper by dancing past defenders in the danger area, but this time Thurtell managed to push his effort away. Down the other end, a seemingly innocuous challenge from Roar goalscorer Liftin in his own box saw referee Ashley Stout point to the spot allowing Scott Galloway to belt the penalty home on 35 minutes and level the scores once again. The action only became more frenetic as the half wore on. The goalkeepers at either end were both called into action before the Roar took the lead for the third time. Hyun caught Thurtell in two minds and as the 'keeper advanced he was easily rounded by the South Korean, who crossed to Proia for a simple finish. Brisbane showed early in the second half that they were not about to sit on their slender lead. Kwame Yeboah forced a spillage from the AIS keeper with a shot/cross not dissimilar to Hyun's in the first half. And the Roar finally managed to extend their lead from the spot as a brilliantly weighted ball from Hyun, who had switched to the right, released Yeboah who was brought down in the box by Jeremy Tshongo. Dougall converted to give the Roar some breathing space. This was the goal that well and truly put the brakes on AIS's momentum, and for the rest of the half there was barely a chance for the visitors. The Roar continued to apply pressure, with Liftin sneaking behind the defence after a free kick to volley over after in the 68th minute. When the AIS's midfield engine Joshua Barresi was sent off 30 minutes into the second half for a foul on Ross Archibald, the match was over as a contest. Energetic Roar substitute Patrick Theodore set up Yeboah, nine minutes before the end, but the big number 10 could only fire over. Can't help but feel sorry for the young lads at AIS.
