Guys

For the Heart to survive - what do you believe they should do?

For me a football club is about identity - what strategy do they need to implement?

Would you consider the following

MH moving to a regional area - Geelong / Gippsland?

If they want to stay in Melbourne - would an association with the Melbourne Knights work and perhaps dress up Sommers st for their smaller games - or perhaps the MH can choose a corridor - like North/West - perhaps their training bese at Latrobe is not an accident and part of a Master plan

My feeling and the way things work in this country is AAMI would need to be utilised weekly - AAMI is costly and should house games that attract over 15K

Perhaps having 3 teams in Melbourne/Victoria would be ideal - smaller games at localised venues - Derby games and High attendance games at AAMI

Victory aside as they regularly achieve over 15k - having 2 teams sharing the High cost of housing games at AAMI alternatively with strategic and considered fixturing may be the way to go for all teams to be profitable

In addition - you could have up to 9 derbies per season if the play each team 3 times per season remains

We have spoken about the smfc v Victory derby and it potential

Next question is what crowd would a smfc v Melbourne Heart derby attract?

Would the implementation of a smfc benefit Heart
'
Is their a Market out there that might jump on Heart if smfc came in without cannibolising Victory?

Perhaps this is the best way to tap into the Excluded fan

Just throwing it out there?

Just a reminder of how I opened up the lines to see what the Heart fans would have to say - it appears the small number of their fans are just as clueless as the football club itself

I’m happy to take up the challenge Chris. Let’s forget about SMFC for awhile and focus on what Heart can do to improve its situation.

I firmly believe that they need to focus on one area of Melbourne so they have a firm identity. As an example, they could target the northern suburbs. It kind of makes sense since they have set up camp there to an extent. After a quick Wikipedia search, I found out that there are more or less 1.1M people to build a team around (see image).

Targeting this will allow them to deploy their limited marketing resources to a smaller area, thus having more impact.
-They could target every school and every football club in the area and do clinics. Less schools and clubs hence they can spend more time at each of them; will be far more effective.
-All their e-marketing can be location based.

They can still play out of Swan St in the short term, but should look to redevelop Preston over the next few years (or somewhere else?), perhaps with some help from the council so it can host games with low crowd-pulling power. Over time, they can slowly improve the facility as the club grows, and build a social club so Heart is accessible to the public.

Having a local ground is important for a number of reasons:
-People will feel more connected to the club
-The small games will have a much better atmosphere than being played out at an empty Swan St stadium.
-Imagine a Heskey or a Del Piero playing in the burbs? That will get the whole joint pumping!
-More people are likely to go to the game as it will be cheaper and easier to get to.
-Get local businesses involved to provide good food on match day, rather than the expensive crap that's dished up to a captive market at Swan St.

None of this is radical; it’s pretty much what WSW is doing. And if you can’t get a decent following from 1.1M people then you are getting the fundamentals wrong. Newcastle are averaging 12,000 people this year from a population of 300,000.

Melbourne Heart need to bite the bullet and go north and gain an identity.

There's much more of course, but this is a start. What does everyone else think?

I tend to agree with you - I dont believe them setting up camp is a coincidence - there definately is a strategy regarding where the Heart set up camp and also the coming upgrades at Whittlea will serve to further anchor MH in that zone

Also consider the fact that North West do have a solid demographic and also there suprisingly is no AFL representative

Another part of me also would Consider the Sunshine region as a back up - good stadium at sommers street and a huge opportunity to tap into Geelong - will build strong links with Melbourne Knights also

Anyway - enjoy your way of thinking and you have provided a plan that makes sense

Yes, the North of Melbourne is a clear option, and you could of course mount the same arguments for a team in the Sunshine or Dandenong areas.

As I have said previously, Melbourne could potentially have 4 or 5 teams in about 20 years if each club followed this model and (1) target a specific area and (2) played some of their games in their community.

With the "One Melburnian" thing, wins in their last two home games and versing a title contender, Heart should get at least 8k (could even get 9 or 10 if all their members go).

LOL

Just like this thread - it seems the only thing MH are good at doing is copying other teams and their ideas - http://au.fourfourtwo.com/forums/default.aspx?g=posts&t=79460

LOL at the argument that trends are on the up coming off a base of 4,300

And now you guys are celebrating a crowd of 7181 (let the pigeons loose) of which at least 1,000 were Adelaide fans

sorry guys but 7181 represents approximately 40% of what will be a break even crowd next year and certainly no where near the skewed average of >9000 you claim to be averaging this year - I'll give you guys a trend - you are tracking towards a season average of less than 8K

Expecting more arguments from the usual culprits surrounding south and its non relevant mono ethnic angle - however 7181 from a broad based team in a city of 4.5 million is unacceptable - unacceptable - unacceptable - - - - - accept it

But I guess a below average attendance result by MH is very acceptable to those that started the copy thread and those that commented to it

I should add that an upward trend is a good thing for MH - and may it continue - but to call it acceptable???

It's clever and witty to make mention of the increasing crowd size since this thread began, but celebrating a 7,000 odd turnout in the large Melbourne market is way over the top. There are still legitimate criticisms to be made about their "product" (for want of a better term), which have been discussed at length in this thread.

Having said that though, it was a reasonable crowd considering the circumstances; hopefully the trend keeps going up. I wish them well.

Resources also give a club a huge edge in preparation and conditioning. In Melbourne, the contrast between the have's - Victory - and the have nots - Heart - could not be starker. The former is based in the state-of-the-art AAMI Park complex, where there are wonderful gyms and swimming pools and top-class facilities, while the latter are out at a rudimentary facility at La Trobe University sports grounds, where physio work takes place in a portable building and large domestic rubbish bins serve as ice baths for the post-training recovery sessions.

If I was sitting at a profitable and ambitious AFL club and watching the growth of the HAL - I'd be thinking that establishing a team for my supporters to follow in the off season is worth considering.
European teams have set up other sporting teams so if you have a strong following eg. Collingwood then a HAL team will work, and would be more successful than Heart.
Collingwood did this previously so with a less risky and financially stable model than the NSL, it would be worth strong consideration.

Bottom line - FFA's next choice maybe between a potential GIANT vs a has been SMFC to replace Heart.
So those SMFC fans who think they are assured of replacing Heart if it came to that, think again.

The chances of SMFC getting back into the big time are dead, with cremation imminent for these aspirations.

As I said a few pages back - they needed just under 7,000 per game for the last 5 games in order to improve their non-derby average from last season. Two games against Adelaide, a visit from Del Piero, and a finals push should get them there.

That said, as jak and Chris have said, 'celebrating' a 7,000 crowd, on a perfect evening, after 2 home wins, on the edge of the finals, etc., when they need to be getting 12,000 to break even, is a little over the top.

It's great that crowds have risen since Chris started this thread - but the fact that the crowds can rise 4 games in a row and still be UNDER the season average, and well below the break-even mark, will be a concern for those running the business.

I agree with you,(surprisingly enough) about Collingwood or any AFL giant joining the A-League (with proper due diligence).

I believe that the AFL though has shut that door some time ago. The AFL now owns all the CLubs trademarks, similar to A-League, and are restricted in how the "Collingwood FC" name and logo is used.

You may want to do some research.

You're right but I'm sure that the Collingwood Marketing machine can overcome the naming issue - the iconic black and white stripes will be enough to draw supporters.
And when you think about meagre establishment costs given all the resources already exist in swan st it's a compelling opportunity.

lol @ this thread. Troll / bitter central it has become :)

The atmosphere at the game was excellent, the result even better and it was achieved with a big even across the road causing traffic chaos. You know that thing called the Australian Open? Yes, that one.
