However, the advice of mr football makes afl supporters sound like snobs and something to avoid altogether

That does make you balanced but you are still viewing this from a Victorian perspective, and as such you can't understand just how little profile AFL has in the northern states. The only time it comes up in conversation up here is when it is mocked with those old chestnuts about knock ons, girlie fights, tight shorts and a point for missing.

At MV that first year was amazing. The vibe surrounding having a new club was infectious. And we didn't even have a good first year, lol. I think what's happening now is that fans are looking forward to each new season more and more as the league gets better and better. The anticipation for this season was unprecedented. Something you now can look forward to.

This fact will help steer any genuine sports fans away from the farce that is the AFL. I'm sure if he thought he could get away with it, Vlad would introduce a rule that says a goal by GWS is worth 12 points, and a miss worth 2. Edited by petszk: 10/1/2013 01:45:01 AM What if the FFA-owned WSW wins the championship in its very first season. Isn't that a bit farcical? It certainly would be a farce, *if* the FFA implemented rules such as "WSW can have their pick of the best players from any other A-League side", or "A win to WSW is worth 4 points on the league table". Someone else compared the AFL to the WWE in terms of orchestrating results. They (probably) don't go the WWE levels, but they are certainly further down that track than any other sporting organisation on the planet. i really cant stand the AFL for many reasons but this being a main reason its so manufactured and plastic But a team created 5 minutes ago by the governing body is just so much more authentic.

Yet the Swans were given a parade through the city, which was extremely well patronised. Did SFC get that for two championships? (it might have done, I don't know)

I would like to offer an olive branch to all soccer fans on 442. You were right - I was wrong. I've just been reading this article on the world's best paid teams, which surveys the average salaries of the teams from the biggest sporting competitions in the world: http://www.sportingintelligence.com/2012/05/01/revealed-the-worlds-best-paid-teams-man-city-close-in-on-barca-and-real-madrid-010501/I'm embarassed to say that the 17 AFL clubs (from 2011) are near the bottom of the pile, between nos 231 and 250. To make matters worse - we sit there alongside the SPL! (very embarassing) The good news for all Australian football fans is that at least we are ahead of the CFL and MLS, in fact, the best paid MLS team, Chivas, is an average $18,000 below the worst paid AFL team, the bulldogs. The best paid AFL team, Gold Coast, is an average $155,000 below the worst paid La Liga team, Gijon.

Gary Ablett was earning $2 million per annum - maybe that was enough to drag the average up? I don't know.

Are the Bulldogs still in the AFL? How long can the AFL continue to support this poorly administered, poorly followed, cash stricken club. I thought they went along with Fitzroy & Sth Melb. I suppose the AFL needed someone for GC & GWS to be competitive with.

The best paid AFL team, Gold coast ... has only won 6 games out of the past 44 matches. I wonder if there is ANY sporting league in the world that rewards mediocrity to the extent of AFL? Is there any team in the world, who have a win rate of 14%, but their players are the highest paid in the competition?

It's also worth noting that they didn't bother including any Asian soccer leagues - all deemed insufficiently important enough.
