For a new team? It's not the A-League where a team can be assembled in 5 days and win the whole shebang!

Anyway, others would describe going broke as another form of mediocrity.

With trying to be offensive or condescending, I have to ask: Are you actually into football? It seems you are always trying to start arguments in regards to code "battles" or arguing that a particular sport is doing things better than football, not to mention make statements such as the one i have quoted above which serve no purpose other than to antagonise A-League supporters...

I for one couldn't care less about such arguments, but it is a bit weird that you would participate in football-based discussions on a football forum with football fans if you don't follow the sport?

The Sicilians love their football as much as their food & their organised crime. Of course the great Schillaci comes from the same island as Mister Football, but alas the time spent with Aussie boofheads turned him from his natural love to the barbaric football he now follows. He pines to return, but his mates won't let him, hence his forays to this football site.

With the Victory openly following Hawthorn's template in Tasmania ( http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/news-display/Victory-offering-Tassie-footballers-a-future/57785 )

is it possible that WSW (or even SFC) could follow the Giants template and play a few home games in Canberra (or the 'gong)?

Food for thought.

Why not? Why not aspire to excellence from Day 1? Especially when you're massive recruiting benefits?

I recall, in 1991, AFL Club Adelaide Crows played their 1st match in the AFL competition & absolutely smashed the eventual AFL Premiers, Hawthorn. In their 1st year, Crows finished mid-table above Victorian power club, Carlton.

So, AFL clubs that understand the sport can build a team in 5 days ... ... but, if you recruit players, who can't play your sport, well ... it's no wonder you become the laughing stock of the sport.

Yes, they did, but even as a quasi state team, they still slid down the ladder and didn't make the finals until their 3rd season, won a premiership in their 7th season.

MVFC don't play "a few games in Tassie". With a 27 round competition, each team plays 13 home matches.

Five clubs are given the opportunity to play one match at a neutral venue.

MVFC: Launceston
WSW: Campbelltown
NIX: Dunedin
PER: tbd
Not sure who is the 5th team given the regional round.

Well, we're only 1/2-way through the A-league season. If you think this is the way the story ends, you're in for a shock.

They are in with a shout.

CCM might go onto to win the premiership, and recent events will then ensure that they are bridemaides yet again (you can bet the house on that one).

Adelaide is as flakey as always, and that leaves just the Victory.

So yes, with WSW's growing support, well on the way to being the biggest football club in Australia, I predict that they will be champions in their very first season.

Tbh Mister Football, I just think it shows how badly the AFL got it wrong with their recruiting strategy. They never wanted the team to be competitive for a few years, so they sign a few young players (not forgetting the Falau waste either) who MAY come good in a few years.

A team has a chance to make an impression, but losing nearly every game for the sake of a possible success in 5 years is a massive risk. Once potential fans go to a game and see that, especially in an area as anti-AFL as the come in this country, good luck with that strategy.

I would give credit to WSW for a clearly devised strategy to get a team in place that could be competitive from the outset, in such a short period. If you get the right players, its possible to do well in any comp, especially one that is salary capped.

Its likely best you focus on your own game elsewhere, as all you seem to have is contempt for our sport. There's no need for the constant negativity at every chance you get.

Tbh Mister Football, I just think it shows how badly the AFL got it wrong with their recruiting strategy.

I neither agree or disagree with your post, but I did want to point out that ignoring the Folau situation (we'd all agree, a fairly anomalous turn of events), the AFL actually had very little involvement in assembling the team.

It set up the administrative structure for the club, it probably endorsed the coach, it set up the ground rules for how the club was to gather its players (draft selections, out of contract players, etc), and then assembling the squad was left entirely with the clubs coaching staff.

The AFL had zero involvement thereafter.

It's the GWS coaching staff who have gone down the route of concentrating on the best available young talent (and opening themelves up to almightly hidings).

I doubt the AFL had no say in the matters, given it is the main stakeholder in getting this to work in GWS. It is a major priority of the AFL and it is throwing big cash at the club and the region.

I do understand where you are trying to come from though for once, as you have actually looked at things in a constructive and rather unbiased way for the most part in this post.

If only more of your posts could follow that template :)

I try and be constructive and unbiased at all times.

Don't forget, both the Suns and Giants copped massive hidings in their first season. The Suns copped a 20 goal hiding in their very first game.

Do you think the AFL would have wanted that? If they had the control you say they did, wouldn't they have worked overtime to engineer better results? The AFL certainly have an interest in both teams doing well, but apart from the setting up - they have had very little input into footballing decisions.

Maybe the AFL thought that was the best way to go about this? A mistake was maybe made. It seems their new template they rolled out in both the GC and GWS yet neither team are getting results.

The idea behind it may be all well and good, but unlike football, player development is certainly not a profitable exercise. Thats where the HAL comes into its own. A team can mix experience with youth and make good money once the players have developed to many countries overseas.

If I was WSW I would be making sure Mooy is signed for a few years and make some very good money from his sale :)

I recall, in 1991, AFL Club Adelaide Crows played their 1st match in the AFL competition & absolutely smashed the eventual AFL Premiers, Hawthorn. In their 1st year, Crows finished mid-table above Victorian power club, Carlton.

Yes, they did, but even as a quasi state team, they still slid down the ladder and didn't make the finals until their 3rd season, won a premiership in their 7th season.

Going to tip GCS to make the finals this season?

Now that I think about it calling their performance mediocre is a bit of a compliment

This fact will help steer any genuine sports fans away from the farce that is the AFL. I'm sure if he thought he could get away with it, Vlad would introduce a rule that says a goal by GWS is worth 12 points, and a miss worth 2.

This is why the AFL isn't a true sport, the league winners are planned in advance by their corporate office.

Next you will be telling me that WWE isn't a real sport.

Funny cause thats what comes to mind when I think of AFL!

An 8 year old competition with teams coming and going carries so much gravitas.

WSW Also had the advantage of getting players from overseas and different trading rules, the AFL can only work with a small playing pool which means less talented players will be playing AFL when previously they would be playing in a lower league. Therefore the new teams had no real choice but to stack their team with youth and a couple of players at end of their careers otherwise they would be full of second rate players, better to give these to the other clubs.
