Those millions of dollars didn't materialise out of thin air. A billionaire didn't hand it over or anything. It has been accumulated because people support the game in large numbers in the first place.

What was the point of mentioning Collingwood, Carlton and Northern Spirit? Was it so you could mention Collingwood?

As I have said previously, we ignore history at our peril.

The three clubs mentioned attracted very good attendances in their first season, I think Carlton even had a successful debut season as well.

In fact one of Collingwood or CArlton, attracted a huge crowd to a pre-season game, might ahve been 15+k or something.

The point is, when do you determine that a club has been successful?

Probably not after its first season.

It's probably too early after the first decade.

If it survives a century, then we're starting to talk about something with true longevity.

This is why a lot of AFL supporters/clubs are annoyed about the introduction of GWS, hundreds of Millions of dollars of the peoples money has and will be wasted for very little benefit. A Tassie club on the other hand probably would have turned an operating profit.

Yes, it's true, a large segment of the fan base is annoyed by the whole Suns/Giants thing, and yes, there are many who feel Tassie should be rewarded with a football team, and I'm certainly sympathetic to the Tassie cause.

But I also understand the business of sport, and as much as we all like tradition, and supporting values which don't depend on the dollar, it's idealistic and naive for anyone to think you can ignore business principles in running a professional sporting competitino.

Interestingly, the AFL is the only governing body of all the football codes that publicly releases its annual report (which contains its audited financial statements).

The other governing bodies don't do it.

I wonder why?

I'm sure the ARU are shocked by the news that Mister Football is not capable of googling to find their Annual Reports. What a waste publishing the last 9 years of them on their website has been.

It's called selective reporting to push ones agenda, a trait the AFL admin, media & fans do very well.

Yep, it's well known the AFL pay large sums of money to The Herald Sun and The Age to receive favourable reporting

Membership sales have moved at a decent rate these last few days, now pushing 8,000 - over two months out from the start of the season - should see GWS surpass their 2012 tally.

West Sydney v the best team in Melbourne, the most famous team in that sport, the biggest club of any football code in Australia with many of the greatest players in the world pulls an attendance of 8132 in the country where the sport in No 1.

West Sydney v the worst team in Melbourne, not even in the top 500 famous team in that sport, nowhere near the biggest club in Australia, without any world class players & looking to pull an attendance of nearly double 16k in a country where the sport is not even close to No 1.

Which one is AFL & which one is football?

Because they compete on many fronts for finite resources; media coverage, sponsors, young athletes, fans (directly and indirectly), access to grounds (especially as the competitions expand in the future) and government funding.

It's Barkly's trollfest thread, thats why.
He'll give you updates everytime a GWS sells another pet membership

He's only ever been interested in trolling on AFL'S behalf-doesn't even have an A League team
Problem is he's clever enough to fool most of the forum

The sooner people stop responding to his trolls, the sooner it can be moved into extra time alongside his other main troll-the foxtel ratings thread, where he has made 80% of the posts
