The A-League will eventually need a 2nd Division competition if Australia want to ever host a FIFA World Cup finals tournament. It's part of FIFA's rules & FFA promised FIFA it would have started a 2nd Division A-League before 2022 with delegation & promotion if Australia had been elected as hosts.

In regards to a State League team entering the A-League it needs a lot of potential supporters & money. I don't see it happening. The teams with a ethnic based history won't get a look in. Teams like the Brisbane Strikers have the majority of it's fans now supporting the Roar & it won't be a good idea having the Roar & Strikers share it's support base.

It might be time to look into another one town team from Canberra, Hobart, Wollongong or Geelong. Imagine the support a Geelong Cats FC team would have. In Europe many sporting organizations have a football team, basketball team, volley ball team, water pollo team & other sports. It didn't work with Carlton & Collingwood in the old NSL but only if Geelong have money or investors I think it would we great to have a A-League team for the summer season.

The Carlton and Collingwood experiment was a classic of bad timing - coming in just as the '98 world cup bubble burst and the NSL headed downhill toward Crawford due to the terrible tv deal.

I genuinely believe that a Collingwood-linked HAL franchise in today's market, with Fat Eddie throwing his considerable (media) weight behind it, would do pretty well. They'd have lower operating costs as they could use the AFL training, medical and administration facilities and staff, and would have a ready-made database to contact potential supporters. The fact that 18,000 turned out for the first NSL match indicates that the supporters were open to something new even when the game was on its knees. Convert 10% of their members and you've got 7,000. Add in derbies against Heart and Victory and you'd have a decent average. Convert more than 10% and you could have a runaway train!

xInfinity, which means it isn't a stretch of the imagination to suggest the AFL's biggest fear isn't that the A-League will trump it in every department, as much as that the ongoing growth of Oz football just *might* someday entice the traditional VIC AFL clubs to jump ship and defect to our code:idea:



I actually lived in Miranda Close(just a stone's throw from the Grange Reserve) for a coupla years in the late '80s/early '90s and all I really remember is the preppy Asian wannabe-gangbangers strutting round like they owned the place...

Go back about 6 seasons ago and Kingston stated like a house on fire in the VPL they had all the superstars of victorian soccer playing in it, cash to burn sitting on top with 8 rounds to go, and then the bubble burst the money ran dry players stopped playing to their true potential etc etc. And yes they had more supporters coming through the gate then Sth Melb. That 1 year they were the superstars of vic soccer.lol

Worth remembering that many clubs in England (and even some in Europe) started out as cricket clubs looking to do something to stay fit in the off-season.

I don't think any AFL sides would defect from one code to another - but I can certainly see the benefits of having a foot in both camps in terms of year-round cashflow and reduction in operating costs via sharing of staff/facilities.

I don't believe that such a move would have a negative effect on the existing AFL sides either. It's a win-win. But it'll never happen, because the FFA won't allow it.


One year, well, actually 2/3 of a year... Ooooh, it's the kind of longevity we strive for. ;)

I dont see anything wrong with clubs associating with the view of making a powerfull social/sporting club.

Like a HAL club connecting with lets say a netball/cricket club

Look at this combo = Heart,Melb Renegades and Melb Vixons netball club, it would create a strong social club.
