They are apart of the NPL banner and are in the second tier state league. Premier league now is the states top tier.

The second tier play each other home and away which is 30 games of which there are no finals. Top two at the end of the season are promoted to the premier league.

Not sure in future seasons whether there will be a forced culling of clubs as its seems the likely medium is each tier should be a maximum of of 12 teams.

Only have started following state league more closely this year.

Football Federation SA is pleased to announce that its match officials will be using Communications Equipment for the 2013 South Australian Premier League season.

The initiative marks the first time technology of this kind has been used in SA and is a result of a partnership between FFSA and the Soccer SA Referees Federation Branch.

The technology will see improved communication on the pitch between the referee and the assistant referees who will each wear a vest which contains a receiver and transmitter.

Referees will have an open microphone while assistant referees will have a push-to-talk button and all three officials will have an air-tube earpiece.

The system will allow the officials to communicate better and improve the decision making amongst the officials.

The highlight of the season, so far, has been the Gawler coach's idea of how he will coach his team this season. He said that many of them still didn't know the basics of football and wanted them to, "Get it, kick it, get it, kick it, get it, kick it."

Cove are disappointing me greatly :( The good thing is their junior structure for the future. Looking forward (if it happens) to the West Adelaide v Cove game on Monday before MH beating AUFC :(

I am actually going to look on in interest to see how our state league sides back up with two games (one of saturday the other on Monday) in the space of two days. Hope this doesn't thin the squads. They will need to play smart this weekend.

I don't understand the structure of the junior competitions compared to the state teams in SA. From what i can gather there's a northern and southern association and a few others which go up to colts that are totally unconnected to any NPL/state and even amateur clubs. Of the NPL clubs whole areas are unrepresented and probably only parahills and modbury could be considered inclusive. Overall it’s a nice way to squander support and talent.

What? The NPL in SA has 30 clubs from all over the place yet we have unrepresented areas?

Also are you referring to the school competitions? They are indeed divided up to make it easier for parents to get their kids to the games they play.

Adelaide's biggest issue is we don't have even close to enough grounds to support the level of interest the game has.

The thing about football - the important thing about football - is its not just about football.

Gawler seem to be letting the northern suburbs down... back in the sixties there used to be four strong clubs from this region in the state leagues: Edinburgh and WRE as well as Elizabeth(Playford) and Salisbury.

Edinburgh and WRE relied on a lot of male personnel (Air Force and Defence Research), whilst Elizabeth and Salisbury were heavily settled by British migrants. Gawler was more of a country town, and hence more "Australian". Let's hope they can pull their socks up and improve!

Nah i meant unrepresented in the premier league. Apparently there were too many teams in the previous super, premier, state league setup, to maintain a decent standard, but even with that setup the north and south junior associations, i think they were called elizabeth & districts and noarlunga & districts, were not connected to any state team = lots of talent going to waste.

Agree with that, frankly it would be a good idea to cull 4-6 teams from the competition and create a smaller pond for the talent to be involved with. Would lead to a better level over all.

I like the idea of lots of teams [i was just going on what i was told], talent is hard to predict let it come through naturally, rather than a wannabe coach pick a kid based on a pre-season, i was more interested as to why those junior associations would be totally unconnected to a state club.

It would make sense to reduce the teams as you've said, the AFL uses something like 10 for the whole state, or if you're going to have 30 something teams at least make sure all the junior associations are attached so there is a continual pathway there.

I wonder how many kids go from the unconnected associations over to the state league, it would have to be low number and coaches would be predisposed to selecting kids already in the system.

Quite a few of the clubs have either no juniors or only started up juniors in the last 5 years. It is the long term clubs who have juniors for the most part and the school leagues are unconnected. We also have the amateur association which is not part of the FFA structure so everyone in it has no direct connection to the NPL clubs. I think you are right that not many cross over, football has always had issues with favoritism in selection.

The thing about football - the important thing about football - is its not just about football.
