Freedom of speech just means you can't be prosecuted for what you say. It prevents the Government from suppressing dissension.

It doesn't mean you can't be criticised, or ridiculed, or lose your job, or be kicked out of your club for what you say. It doesn't mean other people can't or shouldn't be offended.

Enough rope and all that.

Again we don't have freedom of speech per se in oz. And our libel laws will see you get sued if you offend someone

I'm not sure exactly where that limit should be.

I'm personally offended by a lot of things, but I don't think that I can use that as a shield to stifle the voices of people saying things that I don't like... Even if they're not true.

I have complained to mods about what someone else has said on this forum a sum total of once. I couldn't really care less what people say about me or to me and I'm always happy to go in and scrap for myself or something I believe in. The line was crossed when people took that as an invitation to bring my wife into the argument and attack her assumed race, cast dispersions on her character and attempt to dismantle her capacity for agency for nothing more than being married to me. She wasn't here to defend herself, and nor should she need to be to defend from unwarranted misogyny and racism.

At the same time, I'm somewhat glad it happened because it exposed the type of people that they are, and you can be dammed sure that I will continue to hang it around their necks for all to see.

Then that's wrong. Certain people need to realise when not to go too far and just insult and discriminate just for the sake of it . I've been racially abused in public when I was younger . I used to ignore it but that one time you have enough I lost it . I got told it was a joke and I should laugh at it .

Didn't say it was fun. I have disdain for racist bigots - they're utter cunts. But being an utter count shouldn't be a crime.

Its a matter of keeping you're racist views to yourself. I completely understand that we don't live in a perfect world and you are entitled to be racist....but people should refrain from been abusive. If you make it a crime then you teach that person its not ok to keep doing it......if its not a crime then you are letting people get away with it and making them repeat offenders.
Its common sense to at least be civil. Why do you think theres a law against swearing against the cops, its no different and its setting a benchmark.
You might not think its a pretty harmless thing but unless you've been through it , I wouldn't exactly be commentating on the issue.
