Northern Fury coach Ian Ferguson wants competition for spots in his side this NPL Queensland season.

LIAM BUTTERWORTH Townsville Bulletin •
Townsville Bulletin •
January 05, 2015 8:13AM

NORTHERN Fury coach Ian Ferguson wants a cutthroat environment in his squad in the new National Premier Leagues Queensland season, with all players having to battle to keep their spot.

While he’s still a long way from naming his side for the 2015 season, Ferguson will start the work to finalise it when they return from the Christmas-New Year’s break next week.

The Fury coach spent the first eight weeks of the season looking at as many players as he could and wants to add some more experienced campaigners to the strong bunch of talented youngsters he has at his disposal.

His young squad last year was inconsistent, picking up some strong wins both home and away while giving up costly errors in games they could have won as they finished in 11th spot.

“It was such a young side and what I really want to do is bring in experienced players this year,” Ferguson said.

“We’ve got Mick Eisenhut coming back in and just his experience in training alone has been invaluable.

“He speaks to players, he trains very well and he’s in his early 30s but you see the intensity he trains at and it’s great.

“You’ve got Jacob Crowley, who’s only 22, he was my captain last year and he’s come back with the same hunger and desire.

“That’s what I want to preach to the kids this year, I want them to understand you’re not going to play just because you’ve signed with the Fury.”

Ferguson has cast a wide net in looking for new talent,

“So far, we’ve had a few in from Townsville Football and we’ve got a guy who’s travelling three hours and comes in,” he said.

“I’m hoping we’ll have one or two come up from Brisbane as well and I’ve got one or two coming from overseas and they won’t be here until this month.

“There might be six or seven we’ve retained from last year’s squad so it’s looking pretty healthy at the moment.

“I want to try and get a bigger squad and to a stage where we can be competitive in our own environment.”

While the full draw has yet to be released, it’s understood the Fury will open their season away to the Far North Queensland Heat in the final weekend of February.

Off topic slightly but does Townsville really need a new stadium or is this just political bollocks.
Would an upgrade to dairy farmers or smiles or whatever it is suffice?

Football should have nothing to do with, it does not help us 1 bit. In fact the cost of stadium hire is 1 aspect to the loss of the Fury A league team.

It concerns me that the government can pledge $150mil when the state is in such debt, just so the Cowboys can have a shiny new stadium in use for half the year. I just don't get the need for it other than vote buying.
If they must build a stadium build one where there isn't one already like Cairns or Ipswich.
I agree Football should stay away from this. Paying exorbitant rent to the Government whilst being treated like 2nd class tenants is not a position any team needs to be in.

Yep, it is a massive political chip if anything.

Supposedly there are reports floating round that have been buried that shows that tax payers would be paying off the stadium for 100+ years as rent alone wouldn't be enough to pay it off.

Would hope a future HAL team if ever stayed clear of it.

Tis a shame though, can't even really use 1300 Smiles as it would still come under Stadiums Queensland (who are the problem when it comes to such stupid rental fees).

The rebels will definitely have the weight and size but their tekkers with their feet leads me to believe this will be a one sided clash.

Northern Fury 12 -0 Melbourne Rebels

10 red cards for the rebels and multiple injuries sustained to the Fury.

Team finally announced, Eisenhut back in the fold @ #9, you fucking beauty!

Quote:
Ferguson blends old and new with experience and youth
27/2/2015

With only three days until Northern Fury's opening game in the Play Station 4 National Premier League (Queensland) season, coach Ian Ferguson has announced his 2015 squad with a touch of old and new, as well as experience and youth – and with an average age of 21.5 years.

Last year’s winner of the NPL Young Player of the Year and Fury’s leading goalscorer, Braedyn Crowley, and Fury’s Player of the Year, Kevin Fraser, have both left the club.

Braedyn Crowley recently made his Hyundai A-League debut with Newcastle Jets after being signed to their Foxtel National Youth League squad following the Wingate Properties Townsville Football Cup in August. Fraser has returned to his native Scotland where he is playing for Buckie Thistle.

Ferguson has brought experience in their place with 31-year-old proven goalscorer, Michael Eisenhut, wearing the number 9 shirt upfront.

Eisenhut, a New Zealander who has played since he was 4-years-old, has lived in Townsville for six years. He previously played with Northern Fury in 2013 and last year played with Brothers FC in the local competition.

Other newcomers to the Fury squad include 21-year-olds Jarrod Lee from Proserpine and George Dalton in defence with 22-year-old Jacob Richards; and 22-year-old Jonathon Bagley and 20-year-olds Joe Thornton and Tristan Russell to help strengthen Fury’s midfield.

Ferguson has brought in significant experience to the goalkeeping stakes with 25-year-old Joe Simons to take the number 1 shirt and 29-year-old Dan Wilesmith as the reserve goalkeeper.

The lynchpin of Fury’s midfield, Jacob Crowley, has once again been named captain.

“We’re looking forward to the new season,” Ferguson said. “We’ve been working hard in pre-season training and we hope those lessons translate to game situations.”

Ferguson said round 1 of the PS4NPL season against FNQ Heat in Cairns is a “huge challenge” for the squad.

“We’ve never beaten our big rivals in the NPL competition, so this is a massive incentive for us.

Northern Fury has four games on the road before playing their first home game of the Play Station 4 NPL season at Townsville Sports Reserve on 28th March.

“It’s a schedule that will test us with four games away to start the season, but it’s good to get so much travel out of the way early in the season,” Ferguson said.

Fury’s first home game is in four weeks time on 28th March against Sunshine Coast FC at Townsville Sports Reserve.

Massive win last night to open the season against FNQ winning 3-2 with an Eisenhut brace.

All five goals coming in the second half with a red card to Cairns in the 80th.

Fury goals were 60, 64 and 68th minute marks respectively.

Dead set shame we gotta wait another 3 weeks for our first home game!

Doesn't look like each game will have the highlights like last year, think they are just opting for a full round video (which is ok in my opinion, guy just needs a better condenser mic).

Fury Back To Winning Ways

Northern Fury ended a two-match PlayStation® 4 NPL Queensland losing streak to defeat Redlands United 3-1 at Cleveland Showgrounds on Saturday.

Corey Waples and Michael Eisenhut scored inside the opening half hour to put Fury ahead at half-time before Joe Thornton secured the win from the penalty spot in the second half.

Both sides made promising starts to the match before Fury increasing took control of the midfield contest.

The visitors took the lead on 23 minutes when Waples turned home a cross from close range before Eisenhut doubled the advantage by striking in another cross four minutes later.

Red Devils player-coach Graham Fyfe pulled a goal back with a trademark finish from 18 yards prior to half-time.

However, a Thornton slotted his penalty home with 20 minutes remaining past Brendan White to secure the visitors all three points.

The result extends Redlands' winless start to the season to four matches.

Red Devils player and assistant coach Russell Woodruffe conceded his team simply weren’t up to task against a pumped up Fury outfit.

“They definitely won the midfield and in all honesty I think they wanted that little bit more. We weren’t as connected as we would have liked to be,” Woodruffe explained.

Fury coach Ian Ferguson said he was delighted with achieving his side’s aim of recording six points from their first four games of the season - all played away from home.

“I was really pleased with the whole aspect of the manner of how we played today,” Ferguson enthused.

Listen to the full post-match interviews below.

Redlands United FC 1 (Graham FYFE 43’)
Northern Fury FC 3 (Corey WAPLES 23’, Michael EISENHUT 27’, Joe THORNTON 70’p)
