Interestingly the Harrison solo back catalogue out sells the Lennon solo back catalogue quite comfortably...

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Alvin Stardust dies aged 72 after a short illness Pop singer best known for 1970s hits like My Coo Ca Choo had recently been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer Peter Walker The Guardian, Thursday 23 October 2014 21.53 AEST Alvin Stardust, the quiffed, leather-clad pop singer best known for 1970s hits like My Coo Ca Choo, has died aged 72 after a short illness, his manager has said. He had recently been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer and died at home with his wife and family around him, it was announced. Born Bernard Jewry in north London in 1942, Stardust’s introduction to pop success was sudden and bizarre. He was a road crew member for a teenage rock group, Shane Fenton and the Fentones, who had sent off a series of demo tapes before the titular Shane, in real life 16-year-old Johnny Theakstone, suddenly died. With sudden interest announced from the BBC, Jewry took over as the new Shane Fenton and the band had their first hit single in 1961. The band saw limited subsequent success and following a period of obscurity Jewry adopted a new glam rock-influenced name and persona, including a leather jacket and single black glove. Alvin Stardust performs My Coo Ca Choo Following My Coo Ca Choo, the renamed Alvin Stardust had a 1974 number one hit with Jealous Mind, and enjoyed more than a dozen hits into the 1980s. He later took a number of roles in musical theatre. Stardust had been due to release his first album since 1984, called Alvin, at the start of next month. http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/oct/23/alvin-stardust-dies-age-72

Pink Floyd say new album would be 'fun to play live', but tour is unlikely 'The Endless River' is released on November 10 Pink Floyd's Nick Mason says the band are unlikely to perform new album 'The Endless River' live because it wouldn't lend itself to being played in stadiums. The drummer also said it would be difficult to perform without the late bandmember Richard Wright, who died in 2008. He did, however, say that the album would suit a slot at London's long-closed UFO Club, a 1960s haunt of Pink Floyd's. Mason told Gigwise: "It would be fun to play live, but it doesn't actually lend itself to a proper tour. It's something that you could play in UFO Club in 1967, it certainly isn't a stadium sort of event, and without Rick it's probably impossible. It's impossible to play, because the nature of it is that a lot of it is designed there and then – if one played it again, you wouldn't want to repeat what was one the record. It's not something where you learn it and play it." Asked if there were any plans to tour the album at all, Mason said: "I don't think so." 'The Endless River' could become the most pre-ordered album of all time on Amazon, taking the title from current holders One Direction. The album will be released on November 10 and, as previously reported, will be the band's last ever release. 'The Endless River' tracklisting is: 'Things Left Unsaid' 'It's What We Do' 'Ebb And Flow' 'Sum' 'Skins' 'Unsung' 'Anisina' 'The Lost Art Of Conversation' 'On Noodle Street' 'Night Light' 'Allons-y (1)' 'Autumn'68' 'Allons-y (2)' 'Talkin' Hawkin'' 'Calling' 'Eyes To Pearls' 'Surfacing' 'Louder Than Words' Read more at http://www.nme.com/news/pink-floyd/80586#yqB9xmTDF3ESmia8.99

Rare Neil Young live album, Time Fades Away, gets Black Friday reissue Young’s first live album – now limited to just 3,500 copies – features eight previously unreleased tracks which were performed over the course of a 1971-1973 tour Sean Michaels theguardian.com, Thursday 23 October 2014 18.13 AEST After decades out of print, one of Neil Young’s rarest albums is set to finally be reissued next month. Time Fades Away will be included in a vinyl-only box set for Record Store Day’s upcoming Black Friday event. Technically, Time Fades Away was Young’s first live album: he recorded its eight tracks over the course of a 1971-1973 tour. But unlike most albums, those songs had never previously been released; Young decided to share this new material as a kind of “audio verité”. The LP was first released in October 1973, but it has not remained in print and was never issued on CD. Time Fades Away was originally supposed to get a reissue in April, for Record Store Day’s main event. The record was to be packaged with On the Beach, Tonight’s the Night and Zuma for a vinyl set called Official Release Series Discs 5-8. The records were finalised, manufactured and shipped when organisers got a “last minute” call from Young, according to Record Store Day co-founder Michael Kurtz. “Neil [said], ‘I don’t want to do [it]. We’re going to wait and put [them] out on Black Friday,’” Kurtz told East Village Radio (via Uncut). Uncut now reports that the release will indeed go ahead on 28 November. But move fast: only 3,500 copies of Official Release Series Discs 5-8 have been pressed. Young has previously referred to Time Fades Away as “the worst record I ever made”. Still, he said in 1987, “as a documentary of what was happening to me, it was a great record”. “It was just an uncomfortable tour. I felt like a product, and I had this band of all-star musicians that couldn’t even look at each other.” Speaking to Guitar World in 2009, Young claimed that he intended to release a sequel to Time Fades Away using different recordings from the same tour. “I switched drummers halfway through the tour - Kenny Buttrey was in there for the first half, and Johnny Barbata came in for the second,” he said. “It’s a completely different thing, with completely different songs.” Time Fades Away II has yet to see the light of day. Young’s latest studio album, Storytone, is due on 3 November. http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/oct/23/rare-neil-young-live-album-time-fades-away-reissue-black-friday

Recent feud leaves future of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young uncertain ‘I hear Neil said “there will never be any more CSNY shows” – that’s like saying there are mountains in Tibet,’ says David Crosby Sean Michaels theguardian.com, Monday 13 October 2014 18.53 AEST Neil Young and David Crosby both seem to have written off the possibility of reuniting Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. The classic rock super-group could be finally finished, with Crosby explaining that Young is “very angry with me”. The latest update on the CSNY’s future was prompted by a simple bit of audience interaction: appearing at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music on 8 October, Young was asked by a member of the crowd about their plans to reunite. “CSNY will never tour again, ever,” the singer replied, “but I love those guys.” Interrogated over Twitter, Crosby revealed that he and Young had a major falling out about two weeks ago. “I hear Neil said ‘there will never be any more CSNY shows’ that’s like saying there are mountains in Tibet,” Crosby wrote. “All things pass ... He’s pissed at me ... Believe me, not going to happen.” Crosby also took the opportunity to disparage Young’s guitar-playing: “I know at least 20 better guitar players than Neil,” he tweeted. “3 in [the band] Snarky Puppy alone. Hendrix, Stevie Ray, get a grip.” Although Crosby, Stills and Nash have toured across much of this year, they haven’t gone on the road with Young since 2007. The full band did play a one-off gig at Young’s annual Bridge School Benefit in 2013, but Crosby warned then that any further dates were unlikely. “I love working with Neil ... he makes fantastic music [and] I feel really good working with him,” he told Rolling Stone. “[But] you know who it’s up to.” Earlier this year, Young okayed the release of a CSNY live album recorded in 1974. But with or without their most famous member, Crosby, Stills and Nash haven’t released a studio album since 1999. Plans for a comeback covers record, produced by Rick Rubin, were scrapped in 2011. http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/oct/13/crosby-stills-nash-young-future-uncertain

Zeppelin Lose First Plagiarism Battle Tuesday, 21 October 2014 Led Zeppelin have lost the first round in their plagiarism battle over mega-hit Stairway To Heaven. A judge has denied a request from the group's lawyer to dismiss a lawsuit claiming the classic song was heavily inspired by a late 1960s track recorded by Spirit. Led Zeppelin's legal team had challenged whether the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, where the suit was filed, had the right to rule on the case. Helene Freeman argued, "The individual defendants are British citizens residing in England, own no property in Pennsylvania and have no contacts with Pennsylvania, let alone ties sufficient to render them essentially at home here." However, the judge overseeing the case sided with the plaintiff Francis Malofiy, a lawyer representing late Spirit guitarist Randy California. Earlier this year, the children of Randy California filed suit against Led Zeppelin for copyright infringement on the grounds that the opening riff from Stairway to Heaven was appropriated from their father's song Taurus. They claim the defendants ripped off the song while performing as Spirit's opening act in the late 1960s, and they're seeking monetary damages and co-writing credit. New Study Says Radiohead and Bob Dylan Is Music for Smart People, Beyonce and Lil Wayne for ‘Dumb People’ October 22, 2014 6:51 PM By Philip Cosores We all like to think of ourselves as smart (probably?), but anyone that went to high school knows there is a definitive test formulated to tell us how smart we all are: the SATs. And while there is plenty of grounds to discredit the SATs as the sole measurement of our mental worth (that’s why we joined The Key Club to get into college), one software application writer has used the test and Facebook music likes to tell us once and for all what is music for smart people and what is music for less-than-smart people (via CoS). The creator of this handy chart, Virgil Griffith, is less kind with his wording, deeming certain music for smart people and other artists for “dumb people.” So where does your favorite band or classical composer fall on the spectrum? Good news if you rock Beethoven, Sufjan Stevens, Radiohead, and Bob Dylan. Bad news if you listen to Lil Wayne, Beyonce, Gospel music, T.I., or The Used. But really, how many people at Cal Tech, where this study was performed, actually listen to The Used? Check out the whole chart below and feel appropriately good or bad about yourself.

Cream 1966-1972 Vinyl Boxed Set Of British Rock Trio's Studio And Live Recordings Set For Release On November 24, 2014 New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ UMe) Universal Music Enterprises is proud to present Cream: 1966 - 1972, Cream's six studio and live LPs brought together in a boxed set for the first time. Set for November 24, 2014 release, each LP will have exact reproductions of original artwork to retain authenticity, and will be pressed in 180-gram heavyweight audiophile vinyl and contained in a rigid slipcase box. The British rock supergroup was formed in 1966, and consisted of bassist/singer Jack Bruce, drummer Ginger Baker, and guitarist/singer Eric Clapton. Their sound was characterized by a hybrid of blues rock, hard rock and burgeoning psychedelic rock, combining imaginative lyrics, often written by poet Pete Brown, Eric Clapton's innovative blues guitar playing, Jack Bruce's operatic voice and fluid bass playing, and Ginger Baker's jazz-influenced drumming. The group soon evolved further creating a trademark approach built around each musician's virtuoso playing. Their live performances soon became renowned for lengthy improvisational pieces based on traditional blues structures such as 'Crossroads' and 'Spoonful,' modern blues such as 'Born Under A Bad Sign,' and their own songs such as 'White Room' and Ginger Baker's powerhouse showcase 'Toad.' Following their first pop hit single 'I Feel Free' in January 1967, Cream's debut, Fresh Cream, set the tone for group's inventive mix of blues standards and more eccentric original material and reached No. 6 in the UK album charts. It offered a unique blend of blues — Robert Johnson's 'Four Until Late' and Skip James' 'I'm So Glad' — inventive originals such as 'Dreaming' and the showcase, near-instrumental 'Cat's Squirrel.' Before the end of the year, Cream released the follow-up Disraeli Gears, its distinctive Day-Glo psychedelic cover designed by underground illustrator Martin Sharp. Recorded in May in New York during their first American tour, it includes landmark songs such as 'Strange Brew,' the melodic but heavy-riffing 'Sunshine Of Your Love' and more surrealistic, wah-wah drenched 'Tales Of Brave Ulysses'; in all a brilliant, textured, multi-dubbed sound that went beyond blues. Non-stop touring soon saw Cream break through in America where Wheels of Fire, released in August 1968, topped the US charts for a month and was the world's first platinum-selling double album. It comprised one album 'in the studio' — including the Jack Bruce and Pete Brown penned classics 'White Room' and 'Politician' — while the other side was recorded at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, highlighted by expansive readings of 'Crossroads' and 'Spoonful.' By the end of 1968, however, Cream had disbanded after less than two and a half years during which time they set new standards in rock musicianship and generally raised the bar for rock music as a credible and critical form. Cream bowed out with dates at Madison Square Gardens in New York and at the Royal Albert Hall in London in November 1968. The group's post-breakup farewell album, Goodbye, released the following March, again mixed live and studio recordings including the single 'Badge' written by Clapton and George Harrison, who played rhythm guitar under the name L'Angelo Misterioso. Two further live albums Live Cream and Live Cream Volume 2 followed in 1970 and 1972, both recorded on tour in America during 1967 and 1968. Live Cream also included the unreleased studio cut 'Lawdy Mama' recorded in May 1967 during the Disraeli Gears sessions. In 2006, they received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of their contribution to, and influence, on, modern music, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. Their worldwide album sales are estimated at 17 million. LP1: Fresh Cream (1966) A1 N.S.U. Former Cream bassist Jack Bruce dies at 71 The British singer and bass player Jack Bruce has died at the age of 71 from liver disease. Bruce formed the influential rock band Cream in the 60s with guitarist Eric Clapton and was the voice and songwriter behind classic tracks like “Sunshine of Your Love,” and “I feel free.” He was born in Glasgow, and began playing bass as a teenager. He dropped out of music school when he was not allowed to play jazz. Cream split in November 1968 having sold 35 million albums in just over two years. After Cream, Bruce played with top jazz musicians including drummer Tony Williams and guitarist John McLaughlin as well as with rock stars like Lou Reed and Frank Zappa. http://www.euronews.com/2014/10/25/former-cream-bassist-jack-bruce-dies-aged-71/

No, because when you study it depends on the kind of music you wont get caught up to singing along to, its not what makes you SMART! and most definitely its going to be music thats not going to get my ears offended by what I listen to When I study: I play classic music fm and I hope they dont play something I can get to the tune of where I can get very distracted by, simple as that Edited by condemned666: 27/10/2014 09:53:33 AM

Your parents werent wrong when they said guys like Genesis and Phil Collins set the parameters for this so-called "prog rock"

I went to The Rolling Stones last night. Was so amazingly good. Even considering their age, they're so good. They just have fun up there, and do what they want. And I love them for that. Great night!

The Beatles: The Black Album Coolness: The full track listing for Boyhood’s The Black Album One of the coolest scenes in Boyhood, Richard Linklater’s remarkable, 12-years-in-the-making film about one child’s life from first to twelfth grade, involves Mason (Ethan Hawke) giving his son Mason Jr. (Ellar Coltrane) a unique birthday present. It’s called The Black Album, and it’s a mix CD compilation of the best of the Beatles’ solo music, from Ringo Starr’s “Photograph,” to George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass,” which is a particularly appropriate song for a film like Boyhood. Mason talks about the album and what it means, and we hear one selection from it (Paul McCartney & Wings’ “Band On The Run”) on the film’s soundtrack, but we never get a look at the full track listing. At a Q&A after a Boyhood screening in Chicago last week, Linklater was asked whether a complete lineup of songs from The Black Album exists, or if the CD Mason hands Mason Jr. was just a prop. Linklater replied that the album was real—at least as real as a never-circulated bootleg can be—and that he and his team had been discussing ways to release the track list to the public. And here it is, via Buzzfeed. It turns out The Black Album was originally created by Hawke as a gift to his real-life daughter Maya (this is not the first way in which the fictional story of Boyhood echoes the actual lives of its characters). You can read Hawke’s liner notes for the project at Buzzfeed, but here is the complete track listing for your own mix-taping, playlist-making pleasure: The Black Album from Boyhood Disc 1: 1. Paul McCartney & Wings, “Band on the Run” 2. George Harrison, “My Sweet Lord” 3. John Lennon feat. The Flux Fiddlers & The Plastic Ono Band, “Jealous Guy” 4. Ringo Starr, “Photograph” 5. pv4 wrote:I went to The Rolling Stones last night. Was so amazingly good. Even considering their age, they're so good. They just have fun up there, and do what they want. And I love them for that. Great night! Ronnie was never as talented as Mick or as innovative as Brian as a lead guitarist, but he just looks like he fits in by having fun and not treading on muck and Keith's toes. Keith is like the William Burroughs of his generation. No drug can kill him.

Could a Grateful Dead reunion be in the works: Sakamoto All signs point to Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart joining forces on stage perhaps one last time Members of the Gratefull Dead ham it up for cameras back in the day. Only four early members of the group are still alive, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. By: John Sakamoto Staff Reporter, Published on Fri Nov 14 2014 When it comes to the list of bands that could conceivably overcome the twin hurdles of personal animosity and encroaching decrepitude to reunite in 2015, there is only one act that would be a) turning 50 and b) a big enough deal to qualify as a cultural event as well as a musical one. Only half the Beatles are left, so they’re out. The Stones and the Who have never been away long enough to qualify. It’s a stretch, but a case could be made for the Kinks had they not already blown the chance to celebrate their 50th this year, though they could no doubt locate a round-numbered anniversary of some sort in 2015 if the Davies brothers ever decide to choose avarice over disaffection. That leaves the half-century club with one notable member: the Grateful Dead. Coincidentally, next year will also mark the 20th anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s death and co-founder Ron “Pigpen” McKernan is long gone, but a stubbornly enduring four-member core remains to legitimize a reunion. Guitarist/vocalist Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh, drummer Bill Kreutzmann and percussion wiz Mickey Hart are all still standing, despite battling a variety of ailments. And their ages — Weir is the youngest at 67, Lesh the oldest at 74 — lend the scenario an undeniable it’s-now-or-never element. While all have been members of post-Garcia offshoots the Other Ones and the Dead, regrouping under the original moniker would signal something else entirely. Among the evidence being cited for an imminent return: •The sudden dissolution this month of Further, the band formed by Weir and Lesh, who signed off their note to fans with the conveniently cryptic, “We’ll all be keeping very busy over the foreseeable future …” Weir’s biographer expects the reunion to involve headlining one or two festivals and playing some West and East coast residencies, largely to get around “exorbitant insurance policies” for a big tour
•Weir has been especially vocal about his desire to surmount any lingering personal issues. “If there are hatchets to be buried,” he told Rolling Stone in January, “then let’s get to work.”
•The online fan community Terrapinnation.net cites this passage from the band’s 2014 almanac: “And by the time we meet again in this virtual neighborhood (sic), we will have observed the 50th Anniversary of the Grateful Dead. In fact, we are already well into the fiftieth year, since the band’s beginning, which most Deadologists carbon-date as having occurred on June 18th, 1965 — Phil Lesh’s first show with the Warlocks at a dive called Frenchy’s in Hayward, CA, thus completing the core lineup. We do not yet know the exact form the commemoration of this auspicious anniversary will take, but this remarkable journey is something worth celebrating, and celebrate we will.”
Buttressing all of the circumstantial evidence is the kind of prestige tie-in that all artistic events demand: an authorized documentary that counts as an executive producer Martin Scorsese, who once helped transform another musical event, The Last Waltz, into a cultural one, as well.
Still not convinced? Consider this: the band is already selling a 50th anniversary calendar.

Radio National The 90s! Presented by Craig Schuftan^ The 90s- its missing a few bits and pieces that were crucial to the decade, but that can happen when youve got so much territory to explore into what makes a decade

Happy 70th Birthday to Stephen Stills! Stephen Stills celebrates his 70th birthday today, becoming the last member of the famed folk-rock trio Crosby, Stills and Nash to reach that milestone. The singer, songwriter and guitarist has had an impressively prolific and successful career, and is among an elite group of musicians who have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, entering as in 1997 as both a member of CSN and Buffalo Springfield. Stills first found fame with Buffalo Springfield, which formed in 1966 and also featured Neil Young and future Poco frontman Richie Furay. Stephen wrote and sang the band's only top 10 hit, the classic protest anthem "For What It's Worth," and also penned such memorable tunes as "Bluebird" and "Rock 'n' Roll Woman." After the Buffalo Springfield disbanded in 1968, Stills teamed up with David Crosby from The Byrds and Graham Nash of The Hollies to form Crosby, Stills and Nash. The trio became one of the most celebrated acts of the Woodstock era, with its 1969 self-titled debut yielding such classic songs as the Stills-written "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Helplessly Hoping." The band soon welcomed Young into the fold and released an even more successful album, Déjà Vu, in 1970. Stephen contributed "Carry On" and a couple other songs to the record, which topped the Billboard 200. Stills also was successful outside of CSN, particularly with his self-titled 1970 solo album, which featured the top 20 hit "Love the One You're With." In addition, he founded the short-lived group Manassas with original Byrds bassist Chris Hillman that was together from 1971 to 1973, and in 1975, he released a collaborative album with Young under the moniker The Stills-Young Band titled Long May You Run. Since 1977 until the present day, Stephen has continued to tour regularly with CSN, and occasionally with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. He also has interspersed his work with CSN with solo projects. Most recently, he formed the supergroup The Rides with guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd and ex-Electric Flag keyboardist Barry Goldberg. That band released its debut album, Can't Get Enough, in 2013 and also toured fairly extensively that year. Next up for Stephen: he and CSN are scheduled to tour Japan and Southeast Asia in March Read On ABC News Radio: http://abcnewsradioonline.com/music-news/2015/1/3/happy-70th-birthday-to-stephen-stills.html#ixzz3NlNthHYS

Sales of Joe Cocker's Music Surge Following Singer's Death Joe Cocker's death on December 22 at age 70 after a battle with lung cancer apparently inspired music fans to revisit -- or discover, as the case may be -- the soulful British singer's music. Billboard reports that Cocker's album catalog experienced a rise of more than 2300 percent in sales during the week ending on December 28, with 22,000 units sold, compared to 1,000 the previous week. The best-selling individual Cocker album following his death was the 2000 compilation The Best of Joe Cocker: 20th Century Masters -- The Millennium Collection, which sold 7,000 copies, a 4,878-percent increase from the prior week. The retrospective even landed at #75 on the Billboard 200, marking the singer's first appearance on that chart since 2007. Looking at Cocker's digital sales, a total of 121,000 downloads of his songs were purchased during the week ending on December 28, an increase of more than 3600 percent. The best-selling individual track that week was his classic cover of The Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends," which was downloaded 32,000 times: a gain of more than 5,000 percent. As a result, the tune debuted at #6 on the Billboard Rock Digital Songs tally, and bowed at #8 on the Hot Rock Songs chart, which takes into account sales, airplay and streaming. In addition, Joe's 1972 version of Dave Mason's "Feeling Alright," was downloaded 13,000 times over the past sales week -- a gain of more than 2700 percent. It debuted at #22 on the Hot Rock Songs chart. Read On ABC News Radio: http://abcnewsradioonline.com/music-news/2015/1/2/sales-of-joe-cockers-music-surge-following-singers-death.html#ixzz3NlRbez1t

Grateful Dead to end long, strange trip with 3 farewell concerts By Aidin Vaziri Updated 9:47 pm, Friday, January 16, 2015 The Grateful Dead will live again, one last time, in a trio of farewell concerts this summer in Chicago. After that, the Dead will say farewell forever. At least, that’s what they’re saying now. The surviving members of the band — percussionist Mickey Hart, guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh and percussionist Bill Kreutzmann — announced on Friday that they will reunite for a run of three concerts at Chicago’s Soldier Field from July 3 to 5. Trixie Garcia, daughter of the late lead guitarist Jerry Garcia, initially broke news on YouTube of “Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of Grateful Dead” shows — which will take place nearly two decades after the Grateful Dead last performed together with Garcia at the same 55,000-capacity venue. The surviving band members will be joined by keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, Phish’s Trey Anastasio and pianist Bruce Hornsby, who toured with the group in the early 1990s. “We owed it to the fans,” said Hart, speaking from his studio in Sebastopol on Friday. “They wanted to thank us and we wanted to thank them. Without them, we couldn’t be the Grateful Dead.” http://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/Grateful-Dead-to-reunite-for-3-farewell-concerts-6021354.php
