Another interesting article I have come across a while back, but decided I'd finally make an account and share it.

Whilst the article was written in Aug 2012, so the current membership numbers aren't a great indicator. Three points stuck out:
- Roar were looking to surpass membership figures of 4,459 from the 11/12 season. So in 2 seasons they have looked to increase that by 40-50%. Sitting on 6,105 at their latest update. But having a home game in week 2 you'd expect them to gain a few more this week and hopefully nudge 6,500-7,000 throughout the season.
- Glory already had 5,000 members well out from the season start last year whereas this year they have only just hit that milestone. However, the stadium capacity last season was heavily reduced and they were coming off a grand final loss which both would have heavily contributed. By all reports, the buzz is back in Perth this season though and with kids like Maclaren, Edwards, De Silva and their new signing Sidnei looked to excite against Adelaide you can only expect good things. I hope that Perth may look to go for a big marquee next season instead of Smeltz. The reason I think they might is because they have a big stadium now and so they are now in a better position to profit off a marquee. Secondly, Sage said in pre-season that he expected next year to be the year when the club would give the title a shake, so he may be saving coin this season to unleash on next year.
- Central Coast are already up 50% on their numbers from 11/12 season. 3,600 then. Already over 5,400.

So big movers over the past few seasons look to be CCM and Wanderers. Whilst Brisbane, Victory, Sydney and Adelaide all look like getting back to their big numbers.

Only Jets have really dropped off this season. But if 9/10 clubs can improve each year, you can't be too much happier than that.

Whoa, how exactly does that make sense for us? We increased ¬30% this season..?

Not exactly sure what you mean? Wanderers have improved on last season?

SFC

Sorry mate, you're 100% right. For some reason I thought sydney had bigger average crowds in season 1. I was sort of chopping and changing between membership numbers and attendance figures. As in I'm quite sure Brisbane are on record membership numbers but averaged a lot more in the earlier seasons then they are now.

In terms of membership numbers it sounds like all clubs bar newcastle and maybe Perth are either on record membership numbers or heading towards them. (Note I meant Perth look to increase on attendances rather than memberships in my earlier post)

Sorry for the confusing mate

This is what I mean about clubs who haven't played a home game yet. Heart, Perth, Newcastle and Brisbane should see steady growth up until their first home game.

Whilst clubs who impress early will have fringe supporters jump on board, eg. Sydney FC, Adelaide and Central Coast

Pretty dissapointing from Perth tbh. From a very promising pre season and all the positive talk 5k is a very dissapointing figure. Partly the clubs fault but for being so non transparent with the figures which we have seen with Heart encourages people to sign up. As well as being extremely slack with the membership campaign and the huge delays they are paying the price for it. Would anybody know what the previous years membership totals are for Perth, and not just last year but possibly the last 2-3 years? Would be interesting to compare to now....Great work from Heart but

For discussion purposes what do you think each club should be getting in memberships say in 2017/18?
I think something like this could be realistic with the rapid growth we are experiencing at the moment:
Adelaide - 10,000
Brisbane - 10,000
Central Coast - 8,500
Heart - 11,000
Newcastle - 12,000
Perth - 8,000
Sydney - 14,000
Victory - 25,000
Wellington - 6,000
West Sydney - 20,000

The one I can't see room for much more growth is Newcastle because of their low prices and with that they have already tapped a large part of the football community. But I think these figures are reasonable!

It's easy to say that girt but if Heart came out and made that kind of prediction they would be laughed at... there are double standards in how Victory and Heart are percieved (some of our own creation) but nonetheless - like Freo in the AFL - we are always going to be percieved as little brother/poor cousin until we win stuff...

Going back to the post quoted above - winning the league (success) would make all the difference to how people gravitate to your club.

2017/18 is a good season to aspire too on the basis that its leading into a World Cup. Lets hope we are there !

Adelaide: 8,000
Brisbane: 10,000
Central coast: 7,000 (small town)
Heart: 8-14k (largely dependent on success and potential for a big marquee)
Victory: 25-30k (would they bring in a cap or move to etihad??)
Newcastle: 13k (as the league grows with more exposure they may find new fans)
Perth: 10k (everyone always talks about how popular they were in the nsl days, big room to grow)
Sydney: 14k
Wanderers: 20k
Wellington: who the fuck knows... You would hope something major would happen and they could push for 5-10k...

Thoughts?

^ on the above I see 17/18 as a key target. I think it is when we will see another two teams and also a potentially huge jump in tv revenue. Those figures are definitely achievable the way we are going.

From an adelaide point of view my dream is to see us with 10k season tickets and 14-15k average to push for new stadium/upgrade. But hell I've been saying that for 5 years...

If Newcastle could get some decent on-field results, and play good, I wouldn't put it past us to sell 15k memberships by 17/18 (even if the price went up a bit). We have the people in the region to do it, there's just a lot of fairweather, results-driven fans that don't want to watch the mediocrity we've displayed for the last 2/3 years.

Also FWIW I predict another major code to be based out of Gosford/CC by 17/18, and I think this will hit CCMs crowd/membership numbers hard.

A lot of Coast people aren't football people, but are League/Union people who go to CCM games because they want a sports team to identify with. The moment the CC Bears or similar come into a national league, those cross-code fans won't go to CCM games at all, or nearly as much anymore (and yes, I do believe this even though they will more than likely be played at different times of the year. Newcastle/CC people can't afford the time/money to invest in year-round sports, well not all of them).

Given RL management have listed the expansion order as roughly

Second Brisbane
Perth
Second NZ
Central QLD

What makes you think the CC Bears are not coming anytime soon ... RL wants to play a number of games on the CC each year ...

RU HHHMMMMMmmmmm more likely a Newcastle team but even that is a stretch ... first the have to convince given Australian ratings that a sixth Australian team is more important than a extra NZ or SA team again not likely ...

I went to Gosford recently and was absolutely amazed at the stadium (and also their relative success) based on th esize of the community. I understand that it takes in a greater district than just Gosford but seriously that is a very small community to ge given an A-league license... they've done exceptionally well and I would never think of removing it from them but how is it that Gosford got the nod ahead of Wollongong...?

Not to worry, Wollongong will be in pretty damn soon :) More people with large $ live North of Sydney than in Shoalhaven though, it would seem... But the Gong is too big of a football place not to have a team, they've won more national titles than Newcastle!

Glory, atlast. Always late arrivals to the party, but atleast they arrived? :p

Joffa and Phoenix fans - the Yellow Fever's thermometer link url as listed with Joffa's links, is now 'down' and has been since not long after the 3,500 announcement elsewhere via Phoenix social media.

Such a shame, given they are only a few hundred off their goal - Would've been nice to see the thermometer full, like the Mariners page, before they pulled it? :(

All the more reason why we need to expand the A-League to Ipswich (As soon as POSSIBLE)! I know this sounds a foolish reason, but it's another contributor to the list of reasons as to why the A-League needs to expand there, including the benefits for Brisbane, but also the strong location, growing region, strong football culture and history, good junior base, great, ready made, venue location etc... Ipswich A-League MUST happen, though via a 'Wanderers-like' process of due diligence, ground up, I believe - as the history IS there!

We're surely due 'announcements' from Adelaide United, Newcastle and even Roar, soon. AU are surely near reaching the 6k mark, if they haven't already exceeded it (And not told anybody, yet?)? Newcastle surely have a few hundred more members atleast, they may not be too close to 10k perhaps (That would be a BIG announcement for them), but they'd have 4-500 more members now, you'd think?

And Roar are surely around the 6,500 mark now?

Also, as TAMBO said, there are clubs who have yet to play their first home games, with Roar and the Jets two of them. Glory too may 'hopefully' see a bump, come their first home game too?

IF my estimates of where these 'less frequent updaters' are tracking, are about right, then that puts the A-League's collective total as within a couple hundred of the 'magical 90k mark!

FTR Surely the totals are starting to 'peak' for some clubs - Victory as they near their target and are already topping last season, Wanderers (Obviously), AU, Jets, Phoenix, Mariners and probably Glory surely won't see too dramatic an increase from now on? SFC too perhaps, THOUGH, given how they have tracked, including they hitting their goal just prior to season start, combined with their successful start to the season, strong performances, they could STILL add a thousand or two more?

With Roar, we can't be sure where their 'topped out' figure is, but surely they near it now, or will do around the 7k mark - which would already be 'new club record' territory? Though I hope I'm wrong and they keep pushing through to 8 or even 9k and give their 10kfor10k target a good shake!

An A-League, Full Membership, Total of around 95k-ish members come mid-season, seems likely - but any more than that (100k or beyond), unlikely?
