Yea I agree with you on Regan. Decent communicator and can play out from the back reasonably well, certainly not a first choice CB imo... He also had some absolute shockers last season but he still seems to have a bit of a cult following among Newy supporters.

He does seem like a really good bloke and he obviously loves the club but I will be very disappointed if he is starting alongside Chapman against Sydney.

I have huge hopes that our defensive future lineup will look something like:

Sains--Chapman--Good--Goodwin

I'm not a huge fan of Regan. I think he is a scrappy, solid defender and nothing more. Very vocal, which is one of his biggest positives. I refuse to hound him though as I feel for the guy as when I used to face up against him in State League he was always an attacking wide player, and it was only when he spent a bit of time with the Jerks youth that he was converted to a CB. So I just see him as a continual work in progress as he's never been a defensive player.

I agree that Chapman is a future Socceroo. I really rate the guy.

But Regan is pure shite. I've never understood what a lot of Newcastle fans see in him. Should be bottom of the pecking order IMO.

The only thing I respect him for is taking a swing at Manny Muscat in THAT pre-season friendly last season. :lol:

Defensive wise, he's about as useful as trying to keep water in a colander.

I never understood why Ritter was released. I thought he was a decent defender and did the job quite well.

Starting to think our new signing will not be Ljubo which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Ideally I would have the utmost faith in the club and GVE that CB was identified as position of need at the beginning of this year and we had been proactive in scouting a replacement/upgrade over Josh Mitchell.

you sure Mitchell is that cheap? I heard he was on a fairly sizeable contract

Definitely do not want Tiago back or want Mitchell anywhere near the starting 11. Ljubo and Chapman with Regan as cover would be ideal

FWIW I reckon we only need one centre back - but a good one. Ljubo or someone similar would do.

Our starting CBs would then be the new one, and Connor Chapman (who I rate as the future Socceroos captain). It'd be a pretty good partnership. Josh Mitchell & Taylor Regan are by no means starting HAL quality, but both have proven themselves at HAL level (probably Mitchell moreso) and I think seeing as though they're both cheap local boys, are good options for cover. We then have Kanta who I still think should be transformed into a defender, as extra cover.

TBH that was the word I'd gotten from someone close to the Jerks ages ago. But obviously he had other ideas.

Wilkinson won't come back to Aus - he's on too good a thing o/s and AFAIK his team is killing it and his bank account is super heavy atm.

Was probably one of the most under-rated defenders that season - let alone in the A-League. He's currently back in England with Morecambe.

Would love to see ljubo back but should also sign a foriegn cb. The jets need better cover there.

Can't really see Wilkinson signing for the Jets. I'd be hoping he'd return to the Mariners similar to what Matt McKay's done up at Brissy.

So the squadron capo has just said we're in talks with an experienced dutch defender. That could be anyone. Everyone thought seip at the mariners was going to be kees kwakman, but I don't think it's him as he just signed for someone in the eredivisie.

Ljubo is or should be still on the radar.

We've apparently made moves for Alex Wilkinson, Nigel Boogard, Luke Devere, Jon McKain - and have apparently been denied by all of them (not sure on Boogard).

Can't wait for this saga to be over. Just sign ljubo ffs. We'll probably end up signinf no one, and robbie middleby will waffle about how well either Josh Mitchell or Taylor Regan will partner Chapman (which is a load of bs)
