Quote:Aldi was on Wednesday criticised by a number of Twitter users for a range of promotional T-shirts with AUSTRALIA EST 1788 logos. The T-shirts and singlets were scheduled to go on sale on this week in the lead up to January 26. Twitter users slammed the design as racist and culturally insensitive to indigenous Australians, who inhabited the continent for thousands of years before Europeans arrived. "@ALDIAustralia are selling Australia Day tshirts emblazoned with 'established 1788'. Beggars belief," one Twitter user posted. The online furore forced Aldi to apologise on Twitter for "any offence taken" before the company announced it had "decided to remove one of its Australia Day special buy products, the Adults Australia Day T-shirt and Singlet from retail". The decision to remove the garments was "taken following comments by a limited number of concerned customers", an Aldi spokesperson said in a brief statement Nine MSN Link I was not sure whether this belonged in the "Articles that make you lose faith in humanity thread" but decided this was so stupid it deserved it's own thread. I would genuinly love for someone to explain how a t-shirt with the date Australia was settled by the white man fits in with: ra·cism [ ráy sìzzəm ] 1.animosity toward other races: prejudice or animosity against people who belong to other races 2.belief in racial superiority: the belief that people of different races have different qualities and abilities, and that some races are inherently superior or inferior What is this world coming to?

I thought Australia was established in 1901 not 1788. But where's the racism?

Yeah, because Australia was such a civilized and renowned country before British settlers arrived  Now it makes sense... twitter SJW's almost as bad as the Tumblr SJW's.

Eora (and 200 other countries) established circa 40000 BC I understand that stating that the country started in 1788 could be deemed dismissive of Indigenous Australians... but seriously this is not racism.

Pretty easy to see how it offends aboriginal people. Would of made a lot more sense to put 1901, or just not write est at all

If you're a white, heterosexual male, your opinion on this subject does not count, you privileged, racist, lying, bigoted, racist, homophobic scum. Racist! Edited by Captain Haddock: 8/1/2014 05:24:09 PM

Aldi is German.. better not to appease them and make them take it down straight away.
My main issue is that it's factually incorrect.
It offends some people, but I don't see that as racist in and of itself.

Out of curiosity, has anyone asked the Aboriginese what they think of it?
I bet it'll be like Christmas, I've yet to meet a Muslim who has a problem with it. It's the bloody left wing pc brigade again trying to socially engineer us.

Edited by thupercoach: 8/1/2014 06:52:19 PM I've spoken to a few about it today. In general they can cop Australia Day, some choose to celebrate it and some just treat it like any other day. I know some who protest it and refer to it as invasion day, which I have no problem with. They do have a tough time accepting that they should celebrate the year their land was stolen and families destroyed, let alone the implication that nothing was here until white settlement

I do to an extent. To be taken seriously (without be dismissed for having a critical opinion because of background) the white man must moderate his opinion.

I dont think anyones opinion is any less valid just because they are less of a minority. But you're probably rational minded to some degree.

I think the problem with a shirt such as this is the implicit suggestion in the tagline that the human history of this continent began in 1788.
If it said 1901, that would be both factually correct and not at all a problem- but 1788 specifically distinguishes between pre-colonial and post-colonial Australia.
It's easy to see why people are offended by it, and it certainly has racist undertones. The thing that annoys me most about the shirt though (and Australia Day as a whole I guess) is that it's just so irritatingly nationalistic.
