People who have a problem with national identity really rub me the wrong way. I've seen people label national pride as racist. Soon being proud of the cricket team is going to be racist!

Cappuccino wrote:I think the problem with a shirt such as this is the implicit suggestion in the tagline that the human history of this continent began in 1788.
If it said 1901, that would be both factually correct and not at all a problem- but 1788 specifically distinguishes between pre-colonial and post-colonial Australia.
It's easy to see why people are offended by it, and it certainly has racist undertones. The thing that annoys me most about the shirt though (and Australia Day as a whole I guesws) is that it's just so irritatingly nationalistic. what a load of crap

I bet it'll be like Christmas, I've yet to meet a Muslim who has a problem with it. It's the bloody left wing pc brigade again trying to socially engineer us.
Edited by thupercoach: 8/1/2014 06:52:19 PM I've spoken to a few about it today. In general they can cop Australia Day, some choose to celebrate it and some just treat it like any other day. I know some who protest it and refer to it as invasion day, which I have no problem with. They do have a tough time accepting that they should celebrate the year their land was stolen and families destroyed, let alone the implication that nothing was here until white settlement Invasion day  They have an easy time making today's generation of anglos feel responsible for atrocities committed decades before we were even born  Can you really be annoyed by people calling it invasion day, when in essence it's a huge reminder of the fact that there land was stolen, families destroyed followed by centuries of discrimination. I enjoy Australia Day but I can understand Aboriginals having a different view on it

Thank you or the Anglos who didn't wipe out the entire population like the Spanish did in South America

batfink wrote:FFS its just a fucken tee-shirt.... does this offend anyone??? Edited by batfink: 9/1/2014 08:41:19 AM To be honest, that language isn't deemed appropriate in many social situations and if someone was saying that in my presence (even if not directed to me) I'd be offended, especially if I had my family with me. To me wearing a t-shirt with words like cunt on them is basically the equivalent of shouting them out to everyone around you. I'm not particularly offended by the australia t-shirt we are talking about but I can understand why indigenous people might not like it.

I was just being sarcastic but it's a common observation made by every non-aboriginal person that aboriginals tend to get offended by any form of patrioitism by non-aboriginals.

I did use might in my statement but I probably should have also used the word "some" as well.

Edited by Captain Haddock: 8/1/2014 05:24:09 PM Haha best comment will you have my babies? you know the sad thing though? i know people who are so far left that they actually believe that. I do to an extent. To be taken seriously (without be dismissed for having a critical opinion because of background) the white man must moderate his opinion. I dont think anyones opinion is any less valid just because they are less of a minority. But you're probably rational minded to some degree. Theres rational white, heterosexual males. Theres irrational white, heterosexual males. Theres rational black heterosexual males. Theres irrational black heterosexual males. Theres rational white heterosexual females. Theres irrational white heterosexual females and you get get the picture im painting. Point being people saying a white heterosexual male's viewpoint is less relevant based solely on those facts alone is the same narrow minded view that these people are trying to fight against. Exactly. Male/ White privilege is the anti-religious Left's version of original sin.
There are only two intellectually honest debate tactics: (a) pointing out errors or omissions in your opponent’s facts, or (b) pointing out errors or omissions in your opponent’s logic. All other debate tactics are intellectually dishonest - John T. Reed

Well I'm male, white, and pretty well off but also an atheist leftie. So, no, your stereotype of the left is totally wrong. Edited by Cappuccino: 9/1/2014 05:46:13 PM

Aside from being factually incorrect and tacky as all hell I don't see what the problem is? If they'd bothered to put EST 1901 on them then nobody would be able to say anything.
