Went to springy v. cardiff. Great game. Coincidentally, anyone got a full replay of the telecast? No record on my dodgy foxtel box.

A question for you Springy fans - are Springy considered the top team of their Victorian third division comp? Will they get promoted this season? Are they playing in a league well below their level? Or are they suited to the league they're in, and have just gone on this magical cup run?

Pretty sure it's around what most ACL games get, and with word of mouth I wouldn't be surprised if next week would've got even more, pity they aren't showing next week as they may lose the momentum after last nights buzz.

Seems stupid that they'd go to the effort of sending staff to all the grounds and in the studios for this one night as its the "first ever night of the FFA Cup" and then just never do anything more for it in the coming weeks lol.

Surely they don't have *that much* programming that they couldn't do it?

Anyway, everyone was crowing about how Knights were going to use the 'Melbourne Croatia Soccer Club Inc' logo purely to stick it up the FFA. They even used a bigger font for 'Croatia'. I'm all for celebration of your background, I think the FFA's move to cut all ethnic imagery is backwards, but you'd be daft to think that they wouldn't see that logo as a deliberate provocation and try to do something about it.

As many have mentioned great to be at any FFA Cup last night.
I was at Cromer, took another friend who follows our code but doesn't get to many games.
His impression was bloody great !
Game of 2 halves typically.
Despite Manly being 2nd from the bottom and oh lim pic 6th Manly owned them 1st half, playing positive football, their attacking mid Brendan Cholakian was playing very well winning ball and taking them on, their problem is that last pass but overall a unexpected performance whilst olympic couldn't put it together much at all.
HT arrived and we went for a ciggie outside but not far from the change rooms - there were a few mature olympic supporters having their puff as well but as soon as they saw their boys walking into their change room one walks up near the fence saying " pull your fingers out fellas, there's 57yrs of history to play for !, for christ sake its only bloody Manly"
I'm sure Grant Lee (not that I spotted him) revved them up as well for they came out the 2nd half gaining far more possesion and starting to create - mind you Manly had their chances a few times as well and blew them but their defense which says it all finally opened up and allowed olympic 2 easy goals tbh - it was over finishing up 1 - 3 as known.

Overall though my mate was impressed on the game and hadn't been to Cromer since it went synthetic LOL........
Great crowd - great to see around the suburbs looking forward to the next Sydney game.

Rapt on the Springvale result, just what this comp needs to grow on.

On the Foxtel coverage last night they said Grant Lee was suspended and the Assistant Coach (forget the name) was in charge last night.

Not really double standards, it actually backs up what the FFA said about the "Melbourne Croatia" and no new sponsors for the cup. It shows that the "Melbourne Croatia" decision had nothing to do with it being an "ethnic" sponsor just a new one.

Ok. Explain then why Brisbane Strikers were allowed to have a new sponsor for the tournament? But yeah, nothing to do with it being an 'ethnic' sponsor.

Gorilla Sports are not a new sponsor of the Strikers, they sponsor them all the time, they just changed their kit for the FFA Cup. "Melbourne Croatia Soccer Club Inc." is a new sponsor, they would have gotten away with having "AHD Croatian Club Melbourne" on the front of the shirts as they are a current sponsor and were still allowed as sleeve sponsors last night.

Although as stated by others the No New Sponsors Rule isn't one I agree with.

you guys are missing the point. they were allowed to carry their existing sponsors. a big "Croatia" emblazoned across the jersey suddenly appears and FFA are criticised for saying no to what IMO was a case of ambush marketing. anyway, don't take away from the on field action, it was great.

well done FFA and to all participating clubs.

Just covering their arses in case it flopped.

As Peacock said, it can be difficult to organise something like that in such a sort turn around (given it wasn't planned for in the first place). The presenters/analysts/commentators all have lives and to be fair they most likely have plans already.

Whatever the case is, I just hope they revisit the broadcasting options for next year. Don't get me wrong, i'd love to see it every week, but it is after all the first run and there will be mistakes made, but these can be improved in years to come.

As for Peacock saying all games from the round of 16 will be live, i'm just wondering if he has confused the round of 8 (quarter finals) where contractually, Fox have to broadcast all games live, whereas contractually, they only have to broadcast 2 live games from the round of 16. Though, perhaps given the success of last night, they may have decided to do all matchdays from the round of 16 regardless of the minimum requirements.

Either way, I can only hope they revisit the broadcasting arrangements for the round of 32 (and the round of 16) for the 2015 FFA Cup onward. Broadcasting arrangements need to stipulate that a minimum of 1 live game per week for the duration of the round of 32 and 16.

Heck, while we're at it, lets start clamoring for the NPL finals to be broadcast! SBS, Fox... who's going to bite first?

Given there'll be no Foxtel coverage next Tuesday night, I might have to take a trip down the M1 to Melita Stadium and watch Parramatta FC v St Albans. Don't follow either teams, but if the atmosphere is anything like the opening 4 games, it should be a cracker.

This is a bit of a rhetorical question but why do all round of 32 games have to be played at grounds with broadcast quality lighting when there is only full tv coverage of one game.

From what I could see last night (watched the Magic v Strikers game but didn't see the penalty shoot out in the other game), the other three games were covered by a single camera.

I have seen plenty of vision online and on TV taken at grounds such as Dorrien Gardens and Intiga Stadium in Perth that is perfectly adequate http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uq5IEy5FMHo but for some reason, these grounds are not acceptable FFA Cup venues. Baywater's lighting is completely inadequate and Macedonia Park is a hole so it is understandable that games can't be held there but if the games were at Dorrien Gardens (10 minute walk from Northbridge, across the road from the pub), it would be absolutely heaving.

Any vision taken would be suitable for highlights packages online and television so why they are unacceptable is a mystery to me.

Instead, both the Stirling and Bayswater games are being played at the WA Athletics Stadium which is universally regarded as the worst viewing and hospitality NPL venue in Perth
https://twitter.com/IanMorris0/status/458129242509688832/photo/1

Grandstand and grass banks are at least 40m from the pitch. Only chance of a decent atmosphere is if they put temporary fencing and advertising alongside the pitch and allow fans onto the athletics track to stand and watch.

Still no news on ticket prices but I doubt it is going to be as cheap as the Newcastle v Glory game - $12 adult / $5 kids.

exactly.

double standards if i ever saw one.

all this shows that FFA are nothing more than a bunch of vindictive cunts

Says the bloke with the Nazi eagle in his avatar. fmd.

Anyway, everyone was crowing about how Knights were going to use the 'Melbourne Croatia Soccer Club Inc' logo purely to stick it up the FFA. They even used a bigger font for 'Croatia'. I'm all for celebration of your background, I think the FFA's move to cut all ethnic imagery is backwards, but you'd be daft to think that they wouldn't see that logo as a deliberate provocation and try to do something about it.

it's only a nazi eagle, if you put the nazi sign there you idiot, which in this case it is not.... there are many different 'versions' of a nazi eagle, if you wanna call it that....

Mate as soon as you stick a fascist eagle on top of the grb you're going to invite questions....

quick someone go tell the German national team they got a nazi eagle as there emblem.

(hope you dont need me telling you, which one i am referring too...)

yawn

You should tell us which one you are referring to because the current German coat of arms has the imperial eagle and is a replica the coat of arms of the Weimar Republic.

Out of interest, what is the origin of the image you are using?

I can;t really see any excuses for Foxtel not to cover each matchday if it got 36k. Thats just out of the top 10 and their coverage was done on a budget.
Football has a lot more lower leagues that are still relatively high standard and competitive with each other1 compared to AFL and certainly rugby league.
In AFL isn;t it the case you have the three main state leagues and they have never lost a match to anyone else in the country in the Foxtel cup.
NRL seems to have fallen off completely in the lower levels.
Whereas in football you see a Springvale being able to qualify from a lower state league.
So there are about 15 leagues of football that can compete with each other and even have a chance against A-league teams.
Thats a massive number of teams over 200 teams.

If it works and ratings are alright I guess Fox will reassess their coverage at the end of the season.
