That wasn't why. It fell off the front page too often and people lost interest after the first round cause there were months between rounds, which won't be this year. Also because I'm a bit unorganised

Sharks’ McKay ready for FFA Cup spotlight

Palm Beach Sharks’ midfielder Justyn McKay knows what it’s like to have a nation of football fans watching him play in a big Cup game on TV.

In December 2006, in the English FA Cup 2nd Round, the then 19-year-old started in midfield for part-time Basingstoke away to full-timers Aldershot Town in a fiercely contested local derby.

What made this even more special was that it was broadcast on Saturday night TV show Match of the Day, an institution to millions of football viewers in the UK.One of those viewers was proud mum Pauline.

Now, almost a decade later on the other side of the world, McKay is back on national TV, this time in the Westfield FFA Cup.

The feature game on Fox Sports next Wednesday night will be the Sharks hosting South Melbourne at Cbus Stadium in the opening night of the Round of 32 in the Westfield FFA Cup.

It brings back great memories of McKay’s English FA Cup adventure nine years ago.
“We’d beaten Chesterfield in a big shock in the first round. Then we drew Aldershot Town in the second round, who were our local rivals. And that was unbelievable,” McKay told www.theffacup.com.au.

“It was like a cauldron with the fans so close to the pitch with 5000 plus fans. I nearly scored! My friends and family were there so it was a real buzz and that game gave me the buzz to keep going [in football].”

Basingstoke drew 1-1 but lost the replay at home.

At 19, McKay was excited by it all: the lead up, the hype, the coverage and, in a way, it’s how many young players will be feeling next week in the Westfield FFA Cup as the national spotlight is turned on Australia’s local clubs.

For McKay this was a highpoint in the cut-throat UK football scene.

After joining Swindon Town as an eight-year-old he’d parted ways with the club by the age of 17 after spurning the chance of trialling for much bigger clubs on the understanding he’d play in the Robins’ first team.

One such club was Southampton. Who knows what may’ve happened to McKay’s career had he joined one of the most distinguished youth development systems in England.

He subsequently played for Bath City after Basingstoke and it was at City that the Gold Coast came into the equation.
McKay and a City teammate headed to the Glitter during the off-season in 2008. He was hooked and by 2010 McKay was back - and he’s been there ever since.

McKay loves the sunny, positive Coastal lifestyle; he’s one of the more experienced heads at the Sharks and he runs a popular football coaching business called Soccer X.

Now he has the chance to forge some more Cup dreams on the national stage.

And as fate would have it, Mum Pauline is visiting the Gold Coast this week. Needless to say, she’ll be cheering on McKay and the Sharks and is hopeful this time of a Cup win.

The Sharks won’t be parking the bus at Cbus – rather employing their trademark methodical style of play in coach Grae Piddock’s 4-3-3 system, where McKay plays as a number 8.

“Our success is based on being well-structured and organised. With Kristian [Rees] at the back we have a good foundation because he organises everything so we’re hard to break down,” said McKay.

“But we have a lot of energy with our young players and good on the counter. We’re not the side that’ll pass it for fun because we don’t have those sorts of players but we’ll go from back to front quickly. We play to our strengths. And we’re better when we are underdogs.”

And McKay’s eyes have been opened by Piddock; surely one of the most underrated coaches outside the Hyundai A-League.

“For the level we play, his professionalism, I’ve never seen anything like that,” he said of Piddock.
“Three nights a week it’s all structured towards the game. And on the days after our games he’s studying the opposition for the coming weekend,” said McKay, who played alongside former Brisbane Roar star Matt Smith before their moves to Queensland.

“We’ve got a lot of young lads but he seems to get the best out of them. He doesn’t hammer them, he gives them that little bit of confidence, and that goes a long way. It’s worked as we won the league last year and the quarters of the Cup.

“Myself and Kristian Rees who are the more senior players, you want to go and play for him [Piddock].
“Even at Swindon Town we didn’t have the structure in training and attention to detail that he’s got. It was all very generic over there back then.

“For me, as an up-and-coming coach I learn a lot from him.”

And after the Sharks’ incredible 13-12 win in a shootout against local rivals Broadbeach in the last round of the Westfield FFA Cup, this is a team that’s grabbing the headlines on the Gold Coast.

"I've never played in a game like that! It was draining to play and also to watch. We were dead on our feet."

So all eyes will be on Cbus stadium– surely one of the most impressive football stadia in Australia - next Wednesday night.
Even Manchester City officials were impressed with the venue after their clash with Melbourne City last Saturday night.

Now it’ll host one of the most intriguing Westfield FFA Cup clashes in the opening night feature match.

“I took my Mum and family who on holiday to Cbus to see the City game and they said, ‘So you’re playing here!

“And I told them, ‘yeah, I always play here!” retells McKay with a chuckle.

**Palm Beach SC will kick-off proceedings against South Melbourne at Cbus Stadium as the first match to be broadcast live and exclusive on Fox Sports on Wednesday 29 July. The other matches on match day 1 of the Westfield FFA Cup 2015 Round of 32 include Broadmeadow Magic FC v Heidelberg United FC, Blacktown City FC v MetroStars SC and Hume City FC v Brisbane Strikers FC where there will be single camera coverage by Fox Sports to ensure that every goal is captured. This single camera coverage will also apply to all non-full broadcast matches throughout the Round of 32, Round of 16 and Quarter Finals.**

DARWIN Olympic coach Steve Lolias has promised a full-strength Reds side for next month’s historic FFA Cup clash against Cup holders Adelaide United at Marrara.

The Reds qualified for the August 5 match against the A-League giants following an exhausting series of matches and Lolias says his players are ready to take the next step.

“Let me tell you we’re ready for this game,’’ he told the NT News. “Ready to represent our soccer club and Territory football in what is the biggest thing to happen to the game up here.

“I place this game alongside the NTFL v AFL club matches from the mid 1980s through to the mid noughties, when a Territory rep side regularly played against clubs like Essendon, Sydney, North Melbourne, Geelong and St Kilda.

“Those games put Ausralian rules up here right on the map and I reckon this match on a Wednesday night in Darwin can do the same thing for soccer.’’

Lolias has noted Adelaide United manager Josep Gombau’s focus on the Darwin Cup tie has not changed despite his side meeting EPL giants Manchester City and Liverpool in successive pre-season matches.

“That to me is a big thing,’’ Lolias said. “The holders of the FFA Cup focusing fully on a game in Darwin against virtually unknown opposition is proof this competition means something to them as well as us.’’

Lolias was in Brisbane last week to watch the Roar lose 2-1 to Liverpool after the home team shocked the visitors by scoring first.

“That showed to me the A-League is a good competition and United reinforced that with their 2-0 loss to Manchester City, who did not score in the first half,’’ he said.

“We need to be committed and to play 90 minutes of football, not come out having a go for 15 or 20 minutes then drop off and let them dominate us.

“Intensity, commitment and a hunger to succeed are all important, they’re (Adelaide) going to be tough opposition and we have to be on our game.’’

Lolias is confident he has the forwards to score against an Adelaide defence led by veteran goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic.

“Michael and Ross Tsounias, Jacob Brandon and Kevin Menda-Kabangu can all score for us, the secret will be our delivery to them and using the ball correctly,’’ he said.

The round of 32 clash kicks off at 8pm on Wednesday, August 5 at Marrara’s Larrakia Park stadium. Ticketing details are being finalised by FFNT officials.

By the sounds of things the media are lapping this up in the NT. Always good to hear and see :)

FFA Cup excitement will help grow Hume City: Hegarty

Hume City star Nick Hegarty says the Westfield FFA Cup is a huge boost for the club’s profile in Melbourne and a perfect showcase for their fabulous new facilities.

PS4 NPL Victorian outfit Hume meet Brisbane Strikers next Wednesday night in one of the four intriguing opening night matches of the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32.

And for club captain and attacking midfielder Hegarty, the club’s new facilities will be showcased at Valley Park Broadmeadows as well as the team’s talents on the park when a national audience tunes in for the coverage on Fox Sports.

“We’ve moved into a $12m facility only last year which has brand new main pitch in great condition, 600-seater stand and two more grass pitches and a synthetic one. One of which is brand new and we’re still evolving. We have one of the best if not the best facilities in Victoria.

“The FFA Cup is a great way to promote our facilities and our club. Hopefully we can harness the excitement,” he told www.theffacup.com.au
“The FFA Cup creates the excitement and for every footballer at whatever level, he has the chance of playing on the big stage.
“Everyone dreams of the finances that come with a good FFA Cup run but most importantly for our club here in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and we’ve got to get our name out there.
“We’ve got to be the local hub for everybody in the local area. If we can put some good results together it’ll help bring fans to our club to support us week in week out for the next 50-100 years.”

Hume qualified for the Round of 32 after former Victory striker Theo Markelis curled home a winner against Kingston Town.
The one-time club of Socceroo Jason Davidson have been known for their speedy counter-attacking this season.
And Hegarty, a former Grimsby Town and SPL player who won the Victorian Gold Medal in his first season in Victoria, has a player to watch for fans next Wednesday.

And ironically it’s a Queenslander who'll be known to the Strikers.

“Next week look out for Daniel Clark. He’ll be known to Brisbane fans – we’ve signed him from Moreton Bay,” he revealed.
“He’s just settled into the area. He’s produced one of the best striker performances I’ve seen last week against Bentleigh, who have the best defence in the league. Basically he made their centre half, who’s one of the best in the league, look like he’s never played before.”

And Clark has scored against Brisbane Strikers during his time with Moreton Bay.
An FFA Cup omen, perhaps?
Hegarty agreed: “If Daniel performs he can produce that X-factor… other than me of course!”

Still flip flopping between going to Hume City v Strikers at their lovely stadium, or watching Palm Beach v South Melb on the TV for the first matchday.

I'll be travelling out to watch Blacktown take on MetroStars. It kinda pips the Sydney FC pre-season friendly against Macarthur (which I haven't missed in 4 years!), even though I'm missing out on dinner at Wests Lumeah. :(

It will be a memorable debut for PS4 NPL NSW Men’s 1 side Rockdale City Suns as they prepare for their first ever Westfield FFA Cup showdown in their round of 32 clash against Perth SC in August.

It will be a big occasion for the well supported Suns who will be expecting a full stadium when the Western Australian side makes the long trek across the country to Illinden Sports Centre.

El Hafiane can’t wait for the match as Australia tries to replicate other historic Cup competitions across the world.

“It’s exciting to be part of a big tournament.

“Cup competitions have a lot of history like in England with the FA Cup so we’re trying to do that here now, I’m really looking forward to it.”

What was supposed to be a routine win, the Suns were almost knocked off by St George Association side Aurora FC in the opening round of the Westfield FFA Cup where they needed a penalty shoot out to progress.

This victory shaped the Suns further passage towards the latter stages of the Cup competition.

“That was a tough game, the ball just didn’t want to go in that night.

“We dominated, their keeper had a fantastic game and thankfully the boys held their composure in the penalty shoot-out for us to prevail.

“After that match we changed our way of playing, we were more ruthless in the final third, defeating the likes of Sydney University and Sutherland Sharks.”

The Suns opponents are right in finals contention in the PS4 NPL Western Australia, sitting well inside the top five.

Experienced NPL coach Taki Nicolaidis takes his Perth SC side to Sydney in the hope of causing an upset against Paul Reid’s squad.

Rockdale will need to be weary of 19-year-old in form striker Nick Ambrogio as well as Reece Vittiglia who is no stranger to finding the back of the net.

El Hafiane respects his opponents but believes his side should be able to overcome Perth SC and progress to the round of 16.

“We’re looking forward to versing a team of a similar quality in the Top Tier competition in Western Australia.

“Hopefully we can go through, get a good draw and do really well.

“We’re in good form, everyone’s playing well and we should be able to get through this round, I’ve got no doubt about that.”

El Hafiane commended his clubs supporters and is certain there will be a big turnout of support.

“I’m certain there will be a big crowd, our fans at Rockdale always come down to support the boys.”

Blacktown City aim for FFA Cup redemption

The scars from last year’s Westfield FFA Cup exit to Bentleigh are fuelling Blacktown City’s desire to banish those devastating Cup memories next Wednesday night, says City star Travis Major.
City face MetroStars from SA in a fascinating clash on the opening night of the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday night.

And for Blacktown star Major, last year’s loss at the same stage of the Cup is still a sore point for the group and their fans.
City went down to Bentleigh Greens 1-0 a year ago in the Round of 32, with the Victorian club conceding after the game they rode their luck on the road in Sydney thanks to a David Stirton winner.

But City are in smashing form in the NSW PS4 NPL, on top of the ladder with the best defence and second best goals stats after just one loss in 18.

City are on a roll and you sense City have the confidence and strike power to make amends for 2014's Cup exit.
Major certainly hopes league form will parlay itself into Cup winning form at Lilly Football Centre in the west of Sydney on Wednesday night.

“We had a tough game last year against Bentleigh,” Major told www.theffacup.com.au
“They scored early and sat back and we couldn’t break them down. We were absolutely gutted.
“We dominated Bentleigh for 90 minutes… credit to them though, their defence was very strong and their keeper repelled everything.

“So definitely we’ve got some unfinished business in the FFA Cup and we want to mend that wrong from last year,” he said.
For fans of the Hyundai A-League there will be a number of familiar faces in Mark Crittenden’s Blacktown squad.
“Mitchell Malia is an ex-A-League boy. Myself I’ve played at the Mariners and we have Joey Gibbs too though he’s injured,” said Major.

“We also have Yianni Perkatis in midfield from Wanderers and Matthew Lewis is ex Mariners too.”
Also watch out for Danny Choi. He’s a ripper of a striker who banged in two goals against Manly last weekend. Expect Choi to be on the A-League radar this year.

And down back Zach Cairncross is a top defender who’s had A-League experience and adds quality to City’s back four.

Major hopes an early goal to City will lay the platform for a win on Wednesday.
“We’re pretty dynamic and quick all over the field,” he added.
“And we’ve some real technical players who are also workhorses in midfield.

“But we know MetroStars won the NPL last year against a top NSW side in Bonnyrigg, so we know they’ll be very difficult.”

2015 Westfield FFA Cup will be even better

There will be some David versus Goliath match-ups in the Westfield FFA Cup round of 32.

As the Round of 32 kicked off in 2014, many weren’t sure how the Westfield FFA Cup would go. Well, I think that was answered emphatically. It was a ripper. Now, there’s a real sense in the football community the Cup will dial up the drama to new heights in 2015.

Now, a new group of clubs and some familiar names are back and dreaming of emulating the Cup runs of South Springvale, the self-described “Pub Team” of the Cup, Bentleigh Greens, Palm Beach, the Tuggies and a Love-inspired Adelaide City.
There’s even a team in from Darwin this time. And in an extraordinary clash of David and Goliath proportions, little Balmain Tigers meet the Hyundai A-League reigning premiers, grand final holders and Aussie football behemoth Melbourne Victory.

How good is that?
We've interviewed PS4 NPL players and coaches from various states in the lead up to the Round of 32.
And what you feel and see in their eyes is a palpable sense of what this Cup now means at the semi-pro level of Australia’s pyramid: what it means for the coffers, fans, volunteers, coaches, players and their families.
They all want a piece of the action now. They see the benefits. There’s a buzz – no clubs or players want to miss out on the national media spotlight, a packed ground, and the chance to meet A-League teams and their fans.
What's more, it's fascinating for Hyundai A-League fans to check out teams and players they've never seen before. I'm sure there'll be a few fans asking themselves, "he could play A-League".

First timers to the Round of 32 are Hume City, and their star midfielder Nick Hegarty, sees the big picture
The ambitious Melbourne club want the FFA Cup to shine a spotlight on the fantastic facilities now on offer at Broadmeadows. And they have a young striker who could make a name for himself. Daniel Clark... you heard the name here first.
FFA Cup excitement will help grow Hume City: Hegarty
Meanwhile, in-form PS4 NPL NSW club Blacktown City are still hurting from their exit last year in the Round of 32.
They see 2015 as very much their chance at redemption, as former Hyundai A-League player and City star Travis Major told

Likewise, Broadmeadow Magic have Cup redemption on their minds after their exit at the same stage last year.

Coach Robert Virgili hopes his swashbuckling approach and goal-hungry strikeforce currently ripping it up in the PS4 Northern NSW NPL will do the trick in the Cup this time around.

And Palm Beach Sharks skipper Justyn McKay now knows what the Cup is all about.
The English-born former Swindon Town man was part of the Sharks’ impressive run last year to reach the quarter-finals before bowing out to Hyundai A-League opposition in Central Coast. In fact, he’s been on national TV in the UK when he played in the English FA Cup in 2006. Now is his chance to shine with the Sharks in 2015 once more.

Sharks’ McKay ready for FFA Cup spotlight
So Bring on stories of local heroes; bring on the spotlight for grassroots clubs, the chilly nights and the suburban grounds full of character and passion.
Bring on the Cup in 2015!

SMFC PARTNERS WITH BLK SPORT AND UNVEILS NEW FFA CUP AWAY SHIRT

South Melbourne FC is pleased to unveil a new away kit for the 2015 Westfield FFA Cup, coinciding with emerging Australian apparel provider BLK Sport committing to the Club for the next three years as our Official Apparel and Kit Supplier.

SMFC joins the likes of Richmond FC (AFL), Western Bulldogs (AFL), Melbourne Storm (NRL) and Melbourne Rebels (Super Rugby) in wearing the BLK brand in Victoria and will be the marquee football (soccer) club wearing BLK in Victoria.

As part of the extremely lucrative deal, SMFC will also now have custom designed playing gear and merchandise forming a part of its range, as well as a unique online store that will allow SMFC fans from across the globe to purchase gear from 2016 onwards.

As hosts of the Round of 32 FFA Cup tie, our opponents Palm Beach SC will be in their blue home strip and SMFC will wear its original white top with red V, which was the first strip worn in competition by South Melbourne Hellas from 1960 to 1964. For future FFA Cup matches, South will wear a blue BLK shirt similar to its 2015 NPL Victoria shirt. As per our NPL home shirt, Plastamasta Knauf will once again feature on the front as our major sponsor, with MW Lomax and AIS Insurance featuring on the sleeve. Beachcomber Cafe and Bank of Sydney will also once again be on the back of the shirt.

As the heritage shirt was specifically designed to recognise and respect the history and formation of SMFC in 1959, the Club invited legends of that wonderful era in Michael Mandalis (11 Seasons, 5 Championships), Takis Xanthopoulos (5 Seasons, 3 Championships) and Takis Mantarakis (9 Seasons, 4 Championships) to help launch the new shirt. The occasion was very emotional for these legends and they invited current SMFC players Leigh Minopoulos and Nick Epifano to join them in the photo shoot, whilst also providing them with advice for what is going to be an exciting upcoming week back on the national stage.

Speaking to smfc.com.au, Leigh Minopoulos spoke about how much of an honour it was to respect the club in such a way. “I’ve grown up in a South family and have supported the club all of my life, so to have names like Mandalis, Mantarakis and Xanthopoulos who are legends of the club get emotional seeing the shirt worn again means quite a bit to me and I’m sure it means alot to many other South fans too. I can’t wait to wear the shirt next Wednesday night.”

SMFC Marketing Manager George Kouroumalis was excited about the new sponsorship arrangement. “BLK Sport are ready to make their mark on Australian football and as a club we are looking to do the same. We are very pleased that they have chosen our brand, alongside some other large clubs in Australian sport. Following BLK’s sponsorship of our custom designed FFA Cup gear, we cannot wait to get started on some new merchandise ideas for our fans in 2016. This sponsorship opportunity not only saves us a great amount of money per season but also ensures that we have modern and unique gear that is a point of difference from other clubs.”

The match will be shown live on Fox Sports this Wednesday night at 7.30pm, with a documentary on the club also being screened on the same channel from 6.30pm.
