Melbourne Victory can’t attest to the above mentioned. It, and other A League clubs were conceptualised in a boardroom, by a group of people who wanted to establish brands. This was Rockdale’s chance to shine. To show the uneducated footballing public their history, something amazing they created out of nothing, just like so many other community clubs did in our fair city. It was their chance to play the top team in the country, in a cavernous environment, packed full of people, shaking the fences, yelling, screaming…sends shivers down my spine even thinking how intimidating that would be.

Sadly it’s at Korarah, catering to issues concerning insurance for “fully professional players”, which the club is unable to meet. Will be out to cheer on the lads regardless.

Whilst I understand their concerns, it's a good incentive to get the facilities upgraded so when they do qualify for future FFA Cups, they won't have this issue again.

Whilst I'm all for playing at suburban grounds, this just smacks of a elitist bitterness. Could've worded it much better.

Really wish the final was held in Canberra on Australia day at a specially built FFA venue that doubles as a history museum of football with all the trophies.

Insurance isn't a cop out, it's a reality. The romance of playing at shit suburban grounds is vastly outweighed by the multi-million dollar lawsuit that'll come the first time a professional player gets seriously injured at one of them and isn't covered by insurance. A lower league club could potentially be named as a respondent in such a case, along with the FFA, and that could effectively sue them out of existence.

I honestly don't think the lux of the lights is likely to significantly reduce the risk to players, but failure to comply with the insurance requirements is just too much of a risk when players get injured reasonably frequently.

I agree, but have you ever heard of an insurance company who wouldn't make every crazy stipulation they could to avoid paying out?

In addition, I'm sure the PFA will stick their noses in to demand certain luxuries for professional players.

Note: That article was written by "Sydney Soccer Stories" and shared by Rockdale. It took direction from a fan and not the club. While the Club agrees that they would have preferred to play the game at Rockdale, both financially and to have a true "home ground advantage", they also accept that the game had to be moved and the reasons behind it. The club posted this on the FB page when they announced the venue, highlighting the issues...

FFA CUP | MATCH DETAILS
The Rockdale City Suns FC are pleased to confirm that our Round of 16 Westfield FFA Cup fixture against Hyundai A-League Champions Melbourne Victory, will be played on Tuesday 1 September at Jubilee Oval, with kick off scheduled for 7.30PM. This match will also be the Fox Sports Full Broadcast match on the night.
While the Club would have preferred to host the match at Ilinden Sports Centre, the lighting requirements attached to player insurance for fully professional players could not be met by the current lighting set up at the Ilinden Sports Centre.
The Club explored both permanent and temporary lighting upgrades along with the Rockdale City Council back in May when we had qualified for the Round of 32, however, the cost and suitability of sufficient temporary lighting and the cost and timing attached to a permanent lighting upgrade meant that we would need to source an alternate and more suitable venue.
We hope that the local community will get behind the Suns, as they did in our previous match against Perth SC, which recorded the highest Round of 32 crowd for a match involving two NPL sides. Rockdale City Suns are a proud Club that enjoy passionate and vocal support at all our fixtures and are sure that this will continue despite the venue shift from our regular home.
Tickets for this fixture will go on sale at Midday on Wednesday 19th August, and will be available for purchase via ticketek. Pricing will be confirmed on Monday.

What a load of farken shit. Calling people uneducated for not following a former NSL side or something. Maybe the biggest chip on the shoulder I have ever read on here. Also, blaming the FFA for indifference when a club is tailored to a specific set of fans united solely by nationality - boys, you had it coming if anything.

Hmm. The traditional clubs were the 'elite' of Australia for quite a long time.

So anyone who doesn't follow teams from the ex-NSL because they didn't match the ethnicities those teams were made of, is "uneducated"?

I've always gone to St George RSL across the road, right next to Sizzler. Failing that, there's the Royal Hotel opposite Carlton train station on Jubilee road that's a 10 minute walk from the ground. If you're getting the train, that might be easier. Otherwise it's a 10-15 minute walk past the ground to the RSL.

I did post on this some weeks ago, but in light of the venue change for Rockdale’s FFA cup match I wanted to bring back a memory from the former Illinden Sports Centre. As Steven Koteski remembers it, 5000 people packed into the ground (that has since fallen in disrepair) in 2001 to see Rockdale City Suns take on rivals Bankstown City Lions. Yet despite such an incredible feat, you would be hard pressed to find anything online that pays any mention to such. No photo. Nothing.

Illinden Sports Centre was established by people. Hard working migrants, some of whom in the 60s and 70s, worked difficult jobs to support their families, and the remainder of their meagre resources pumped into something they loved, being football. The current Illinden Sports Centre (1km from the original site) has very much that same spirit and established by the same people, embodying that same commitment.

Some clubs have succumbed to the indifference of the FFA, have folded and died. Others have seen their fan base completely diminish because their youngsters simply want to watch elite football (which traditional clubs are systematically prevented of being a part of, regularly). They didn’t think people, if left to their own devices, were capable enough to have clubs that were palatable to the greater Australian audience. As such, they took that autonomy away from us.

The clubs were left to their own devices, in elite level football, they did fail to become "palatable" to the greater Australian audience. This is just a historical fact.

Melbourne Victory can’t attest to the above mentioned. It, and other A League clubs were conceptualised in a boardroom, by a group of people who wanted to establish brands. Not established around a group of people, but only done so in a place where they could ensure the commitment of owners or corporate interests.

This is bull. It removes the interest and influence that members have in their club.

I see excitement in the stands at A League games. Singing, dancing and it’s a great thing (I do the same when I attend).Yet without disrespecting any fellow A league followers out there, what is it that we actually sing for? “The Komiti”, “The Avala Boys, Olympic, Sydney United and many other traditional clubs sing for a team, as it represents who they are. Similarly the clubs I support overseas, Olympique Marseille and AFC Wimbledon, do so with passion that comes from identity, having overcome difficulties and succeeded. Fans that sing because their fathers created the club they support. I just have no idea how someone can possibly shout with anywhere near that same vehemence, for a team that you had no affiliation with the year (or week) earlier. Perhaps they are just happy to have a club to support, and I can respect that too.

No, we sing for our club and our area. The difficulties we have overcome are those that prevented football becoming a professional sport playing to the wider Australian audience. Singing because your dad created the club is great but it is exactly the reason it is a small club with a small group of dedicated fans.

You didn't create football out of nothing, it has been around since the birth of Federal Australia, fighting those same forces that have tried to make it an un-Australian pursuit. To label the wider football community as uneducated is disrespectful and wrong.

Sadly it’s at Korarah, catering to issues concerning insurance for “fully professional players”, which the club is unable to meet. Will be out to cheer on the lads regardless.

Agreed, sad that Illinden wasn't up to it but should be a good occasion none the less.

An interesting article I found on the Rockdale City Suns facebook page regarding how much of a loss it means to the club and it's supporters with their Ro16 game being moved to Jubilee Oval, instead of it being held at Bicentennial.

Melbourne Victory can’t attest to the above mentioned. It, and other A League clubs were conceptualised in a boardroom, by a group of people who wanted to establish brands. Not established around a group of people, but only done so in a place where they could ensure the commitment of owners or corporate interests.

Whilst I understand their concerns, it's a good incentive to get the facilities upgraded so when they do qualify for future FFA Cups, they won't have this issue again.

What a load of farken shit. Calling people uneducated for not following a former NSL side or something. Maybe the biggest chip on the shoulder I have ever read on here. Also, blaming the FFA for indifference when a club is tailored to a specific set of fans united solely by nationality - boys, you had it coming if anything.

fyi, that article was not written by rockdale city suns. its from sydney soccer stories.
in saying so, i can tell you that the game being moved at jubilee is both costing the club a bomb, and the club misses out of course on both catering, not to mention losing home ground advantage.

So apparently there's a healthy handful of Sydney United and Sydney Olympic supporters making the trip down to Melbourne. I gather the Sydney United supporters will be boosted with an addition of Melbourne Knights supporters, likewise South Melbourne supporters joining Olympic.

Interesting to note, there's been a flare count of 0 this FFA Cup. I get the feeling that might change in the Ro16.

I'm glad to hear that, as it was so disrespectful to Victory and the fans and making up total fiction about the club's origin, so yeah I'm glad I don't have to be mad at Rockdale.

there should be a fairly reasonable contingent of Croats from Melbourne that will go to the Heidelberg match. hopefully it's a decent crowd overall.

you must of missed the Rockdale vs Perth FC match

Good to know there might be some released then for the Victory game. But given it's at Kograh, and there'll be a police presence, maybe not.
