Balgownie may have formed as a club in 1883 however they would not have been a football club. Perhaps a sport club. The oldest football club is Adamstown.

With both Balgownie and Adamstown's first officially recorded games coming in 1890. I'm going to go with Balgownie's claims that they started playing games of football among themselves by 1883 at the latest and claim to have entered the State Gardiner Knock-out Cup in 1886 or 1887.

I got around to counting the NSW clubs. So this is the break down as close as I could make it of FFA affiliated stand alone clubs with a Mens Open age team playing in Australia.

Don't South Hobart basically have a monopoly over Tasmania. Could be wrong, but they seem to always be picking up silverware in Tasmania. They were finalists in last years NPL title.
