Knights def Oakleigh 1-0. South cannot be caught now. Well done to the champions. Been a long 8 years. Special mention to coach Chris Taylor for turning us from a complete basket case to a ruthless winning machine in the space of 15 months.

Congrats Smfc, I was hoping to attend a game with all on the line for both clubs but that's not meant to be.

Can't wait for the npl finals. Should south win, would you add a 5th star to your badge?

the stick oakleigh will cop will be worth coming down for alone. As for the star absolutely not...it's not a genuine national title. However winning it will be huge as it gives a spot to next years FFA cup which is hard to qualify for out of Victoria as we found out.

Not expecting this at all! Really thought it would go down to Sunday and was excitedly terrified at facing the Cannons for the title. Congrats to the boys! It's been a great year. Can't wait to see the National finals!

I'm still down cause it will be a great game of football, but might only catch the second half since my game finishes around 5 in latrobe. Thanks for the advice though, ill sit near the active south fans.

Fair enough on the star. I didn't know winning the NPL finals gives an automatic FFA cup spot, are you sure?

Personally I don't think you could equate NPL Championship with a fully fledged National title. Would probably diminish their value in the eyes of many outsiders.

Well you can only win what you have in front of you, but i understand your opinion.

The big clubs share the silverware this season which in a way is nice to see. Perhaps an expanded NPL finals series could include cup winners in the future.

The fairytale story on ballarats fight to stay up continues. Just beat knights 2-0, have a game in hand where they are up 2-0. Assuming they win that and weribee lose tomorrow they stay up.

Haven't heard a peep about that abandoned match with Pascoe Vale since the week it happened, if anyone has any word about it please share.

Ballarat were up 2-0 in something like the 68th minute when it was abandoned due to a bad injury.

The result of this will almost certainly have an effect on who gets relegated.

Pascoe Vale are safe from relegation and that game was away. They might just forfeit the game if they have to start where they left off.

Could be the case, especially as I'd imagine the game would have to be before Sunday week, which is supposed to be the last day.

It sucks that they haven't said a word about this issue for months when relegation could depend on it either way for a number of teams.

Since the game wasn't 80% complete, which would allow the result to stand as is, the FFV has a range of options about what action it can take. Among other options, it can have the game played from the point it left off, or it can ask for a replay of the entire game. I'd be pretty annoyed if I was at a club that got relegated because the two teams from the abandoned match agreed not to play the rest of the game or to not replay the game because it was mutually beneficial to do so.

The game is being played on Wednesday in Ballarat.

Will continue exactly the same as it left off, unless someone is injured and the clubs can provide medical evidence.

As it stands, both clubs have agreed to play so it should be going ahead.

NPL fixtures say 8:00 on Wednesday, but no detail that I've seen about when they'll resume play from - but others also seem to be suggesting from 70th minute.

Werribee City, Heidelberg United just ending 0-0, Werribee apparently missing a penalty in the 90th minute!

That makes the dropzone like:
Port Melbourne -14gd 27pts
Werribee City -21gd 27pts
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Ballarat RD -11gd 24pts
GVS already out.

All teams with one game to play, other than Ballarat also having the last 20 minutes of a game to play from being 2-0 up against Pascoe Vale.

Ballarat are against Oakleigh Cannons on the final day on Sunday 14th which won't be easy, although the title hunt is over, while crucially Werribee and Port play each other. Unless Werribee and Port draw (and assuming Ballarat still win that Pascoe Vale replay), Ballarat could still be safe with a loss to Oakleigh.

Dandy are now safe as Port or Werribee can't both get three points.

Great evening at Lakeside yesterday - title secured before kick-off, just local pride to play for and a last minute equaliser saved that for South.

Interesting with all the talk of ethnic rivalry that the vitriol at the game was between South/Oakleigh (both Greek), whilst South fans were singing for "Melbourne Croatia" (due to the Knights win over Oakleigh handing us the title mid-week), and a group of Czech fans from Bohemians were there joining in with the Clarendon Corner celebrations. Minister for Multicultural Affairs was there as well...

On an interesting and entertaining aside - a year ago South were serving legal papers on the FFV, yesterday the same man who was on the end of those legal papers was handing us the NPL trophy... Funny how football works out.

Looks like I may have jumped the gun! Relegation battle it on! Would be great to see Ballarat stay up - would speak volumes about the progress they've made this year not to mention the inclusion of their completed stadium next year. Proper seating - yes please, another quality football stadium in the NPL.

Also what a great night yesterday!!! GO SOUTH! Lets make it back to back!

Red Devils aim to avoid relegation in unfinished game with Pascoe Vale By MICHAEL POLLOCK Sept. 10, 2014, 12:59 a.m.

BALLARAT Red Devils could be just 26 minutes away from a leap out of the National Premier Leagues Victoria relegation zone.

The Reds will renew ties with Pascoe Vale at Morshead Park on Wednesday night, holding a 2-0 lead in an abandoned clash dating back to round 18.

A win would see the club join ranks with Werribee City and Port Melbourne on 27 points heading into the final round of the season.

However, Ballarat’s healthy goal differential will see it momentarily, and perhaps permanently, jump out of the final two ladder positions.

Reds player/manager James Robinson indicated last week he would use the same squad that trounced Melbourne Knights on Saturday.

Robinson has no intentions of parking the bus, and says his side will approach the contest the same as any other.

The final round of the season will see Werribee and Port Melbourne pitted against each other, while the McDonald’s Red Devils will take on second-placed Oakleigh Cannons.

A draw against the Cannons would confirm Ballarat’s spot in the NPLV for season 2015.

A favourable loss could also guarantee the club safety.

“It’s not much fun to be honest, but that’s football and there’s just as much excitement or tension as a grand final to be honest,” Red Devils chairman Duncan Smith said of a thrilling end of year.

“There are all sorts of things that could happen – some four or five or six different results.

“I believe we have done enough this season to stay in the league, but I’m sure that the other two clubs are saying that as well.”

Wednesday’s kick-off will start at 7.30pm, with the club offering free entry.
