They have changed the rules regarding the discrimination act - I think this knighthood business is a ploy to distract us from that

Dopey monarchists at it again. Thought we would have tired of being ruled by an inbred German family, but alas, some still revere their chains.

There's only one reason why the liberals and nationals want to bring back imperial honours - so they can hand them out to themselves, their friends, and their donors. I disagree with people who say this is a distraction. This is an important reflection of who the current government really are - elitist pricks who don't care about ordinary Australians. In ten years, they all want to walk around Australia like kings and queens, demanding that we all call them Sir and Dame because they so expertly destroyed universal health care, public education, the manufacturing industry, racial discrimination laws, and most of Australia's natural environment, and destroyed Australia's egalitarian society. Some of the illustrious people people that got Knighthoods last time included: - Sir John Kerr, the governor general who wrongly dismissed the Whitlam Government, and who was drunk while reading a speech at the Melbourne Cup - Sir David Morris, Sir John Kerr's personal staffer, who did nothing more notable than to read out the Whitlam dismissal proclamation - Sir Joh Bjelke-Peterson, the former premier of Queensland, who ran a racist, corrupt, authoritarian police state - Sir Terry Lewis, the corrupt former police commissioner of Queensland (his Knighthood was later stripped) - Sir Colin Syme, former director of BHP - Dame Pattie Menzies, the wife of former Liberal Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies (also knighted) - Sir Garfield Barwick, former liberal party politician and Chief Justice of the Surpreme court (appointed by Menzies) - Sir Paul Hasluck, former liberal MP and later Governor General, and his wife, Dame Alexandra Hasluck - Sir James Killeen, former liberal party minister for Defence - Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, the mother of Rupert Murdoch (although to be fair, she was an outstanding philanthropist) They ain't going to be handing them out to you or me , folks. Even News Ltd are onto them this morning: Edited by Lastbroadcast: 26/3/2014 09:09:53 AM

Brilliant post Lastbroadcast. A few of the younger blokes should watch the great man in action here. Parliament was so much better then. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gc96KVsTKtY (Keating in full flight berating the opposition about cultural cringe.) How the hell do you embed a youtube video? I've dropped the embed code in and she's not coming up. Edited by munrubenmuz: 26/3/2014 09:54:04 AM

Lots of artists should get it for their contribution, my best knowledge is of our film industry and would include Baz Luhrmann,Peter Weir, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Geoffrey Rush, Hugh Jackman, Andrew Lesnie...
And then the sticker topic of athletes. I think nobody would be against having a Dame Cathy Freeman, but how about Sir Steven Bradbury, Mark Waugh, Ange Postecoglue? No to athletes and entertainers. Honour should be reserved for those working hard without recognition. Cobber Cosgrove sounds good to me. You'd probably rather it were Comrade Cosgrove but we'll agree to disagree. Nothing wrong with Dame or Sir.

They belong to another era and are a throwback to another countries honours system What is wrong with simply having an AO as our highest honour? We're Australian not British. It's like introducing a medal now that is more prestigious and honourable than the Victoria Cross. All that does is cheapen every winner of that by making it the second highest honour. Australia did away with the term Queen's Counsel in 1994 and now (of course) in Qld they've restored that too. We're going backwards. Meanwhile in NZ they're having a referendum to change the flag. Do yourself a favour and watch the Keating video above.

Under maintainece so i can't access it. Anyway, our identity is part of the British empire.... That's our cultural heritage. Claiming otherwise is to forget about our history as a nation.

Britain hasn't even been our closest foreign policy partner since 1941. We are a different country now. Most of the politicians who hug tight to Britain in the 50s were doing so for political reasons. New Zealand is going to have a referendum on changing the flag. Even Scotland wants to get out of Great Britain - they're having a referendum on it next year. We're the only idiots who want to hug tighter to old, outdated symbols. The republican site probably collapsed under the volume of people wanting to join last night. [edit: working now]. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Former_British_colonies That's a list of former British colonies. Their cultural heritage is British to some extent. Does that mean they can't have their own values, their own honours system, their own flag, their own history. No one is saying to forget about our history but we've moved own. Do you think the Americans, the Canadians or the Indians have ignored or forgotten their history simply because they've moved on? Have a look at the picture of the flags in this link. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11217658 You'll notice that besides Australia and New Zealand the only other countries in the world with the Union Jack on their flag are pissant pacific island nations or tax havens for off-shore banking. We need to grow up as a country. Did you watch the Keating video? When no person ever born in Australia can ever be our head of state of our own country something is very wrong. When the referendum happened years ago I thought at the time we should stay in the Commonwealth solely because I saw the idea of war as being scary for us, being so isolated, and thought Britain were one of the only nations that would help us out.
But after the Iraq/Afghanistan stuff - I feel completely comfortable with America saving our butts and nowadays I don't feel like Britain has enough to offer us to continue flying their flag. So I am a casual fan of becoming a Republic.
So this sir/dame thing - not exactly my cup of tea tbh, as it seems to be just an attempt to strengthen the non-republic ties.
