But after the Iraq/Afghanistan stuff - I feel completely comfortable with America saving our butts and nowadays I don't feel like Britain has enough to offer us to continue flying their flag. So I am a casual fan of becoming a Republic.
So this sir/dame thing - not exactly my cup of tea tbh, as it seems to be just an attempt to strengthen the non-republic ties. Well the Americans coming to save our arses were the only reason we went there in the first place. That's the deal. We ponce around the Pacific with the deputy sheriff's badge and we hope that, if it all turns to shit, the good ol' US of A will come and save our bacon.

Paul Keating once said "we have to find our security within Asia, not from it.
It's hard for us to be better friends with Asian countries when the message we send is "we're bringing back British Knighthoods, and we're changing the law so people can racially vilify Asians".
I'd love to be a fly on the wall when Tony Abbott has to explain this bullshit to President Yudhuyono, or President Xi Jinping, or Prime Minister Abe. Or even Barack Obama.

I heard this morning that he never consulted his cabinet before going public with this. Turnbull would be apoplectic I'd imagine. Hard to imagine what republican liberal premiers such as Barnett in WA and the new bloke in Tassie think about all this.

Meanwhile in Britain. Bemusement in the UK over Australian plans to reintroduce knighthoods http://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2014/s3971472.htm And while I'm ranting. Quentin Bryce, who supports a republic, and publicly stated so, much to the derision of some members of the Liberal party, should have done the honourable thing and politely declined. They belong to another era and are a throwback to another countries honours system What is wrong with simply having an AO as our highest honour? We're Australian not British. It's like introducing a medal now that is more prestigious and honourable than the Victoria Cross. All that does is cheapen every winner of that by making it the second highest honour. Australia did away with the term Queen's Counsel in 1994 and now (of course) in Qld they've restored that too. We're going backwards. Meanwhile in NZ they're having a referendum to change the flag. Do yourself a favour and watch the Keating video above. Keating video? I lived right through his prime ministership, such as it was. Talk about focusing on minor issues while the economy was in the toilet! If I never hear from that clown again it'll be too soon.

It is an odd thing to bring back.... But we all know Abbott wants us to go back to the 60's. Women get in the kitchen, black and white tvs and kickbacks in every corner of the government.

The point was he explains, in detail, as to why we should be our own country . You may not like him but he was more pro-Australian then John Howard or Tony Abbott will ever be. You can pretty much transplant that video into today's world and it would still be relevant. Edited by munrubenmuz: 26/3/2014 01:50:49 PM

Forget about big business tax breaks, education cuts at all levels, job losses, environmental destruction, 'red tape' legislature scrapped etc etc. Here da shiny ball u lyk?

How the hell do you embed a youtube video? I've dropped the embed code in and she's not coming up.

If anything, I hope this ridiculous notion brings the republican debate front and centre again. Long long overdue. Can tell by reading through this thread how little it resonates with younger people. Apathetic responses at best.

Yes, we should apologise for upholding free speech lest it upset the one-party of goons in China, and the religious sentiments in Indonesia. ](*,) In point of fact, this welcome amendment moves us closer to the US appreciation of free speech.

I'm pro republican, but have no real issue with this. Those criticizing athletes/artists being awarded them, it actually adds to the significance of doctors/scientists etc being awarded them. It publicicses their achievement and helps to put them on the same level as these other national heroes in the general publics eyes.
The reality for the pro republican movement is that Will becoming King will be a massive boost for the monarchy. I think it will be a long time yet before we become a republic sadly

It's fucking ridiculous. there is no reason for it and it is a meaningless title in this day and age.
It won't make people of merit any better known and those that would care to know will already know and the OOA is already handed out to people deserving.
Also Republican to the core, Fuck the Queen, Fuck the Royal family and Fuck the Monarchy, it is a useless figure head that should be cut off and Australia allowed to move forward with this dreaded state we have allowed to become.
Also Fuck the Governor General too for good measure.

It’s now easy to spot the classless bogan, as they are simply whinging about this announcement. The fact that this has caused some much comment is a case of how bogan this country now really is.

Exactly how does it at Class or make someone more regal? how will making Peter Cosgrove a Knight change anything at all? he's already been a leader of Men, a man look to, to make the tough decisions. calling him Sir doesn't make him an more or less the man he was. It's useless wank and anyone who thinks it classes up the Joint, may need to point the Bogan finer to the person (or persons) they see in the mirror each morning. If you want a Knighthood, go and see the Queen, I'm sure she'll be able to hand them out to those deserving.

Because it's a desperate attempt at respectability by kowtowing to a foreign honours system. What the hell is wrong with being proud of Australia and the country we are. We're not British, we don't need a British set of Honours. It's like your kid or little brother wearing your clothes to show you how grown up he is. It's pathetic.

When you've got John Howard calling it "anachronistic" you know you're fucking up. I mean, the guy was a passionate monarchist.
