As we've seen with AU above, with first home games of the season also lined up for Melbourne City, Newcastle, Perth and the maxxed Wanderers, we will hopefully indeed see one final bump up for AU, City, Jets and Glory - that may give the overall membership tally a collective boost of a couple thousand or so, pushing the league ever closer to that 110k members target.

AU are surely close to entering club record members territory, if they haven't already, joining the four other clubs who already have thus far, including City and WSW. Hopefully Glory see a good crowd and subsequent member boost, come hosting Roar this Sunday. If they do, then they too could be pushing club record territory, especially if Glory can get closer to 6k members.

The fact no one is managing the numbers more effectively is astonishing, especially from a business point of view.

I highly doubt that last year Perth landed on exactly 5k. It's 2014 and these numbers should be far more accurate. It's piss poor.

I hope people recognise those numbers just estimates and taken from very vague sources at the time. Even extracting those estimates were blood from stone. But granted, you can presume the real numbers were not much greater than those vague figures. The [url]A-League.com.au[url] updates have turned everything around and finally the likes of Glory, Phoenix and any others, can no longer hide. Nothing to be greatly ashamed either and all the more perplexing for the secrecy or oversight. It's a solid base in-which to build and infact, in some ways, a base larger than from which the likes of even Roar, Sydney FC and co originally grew from! Mind you, the weekly tally tables also reflect how many of these clubs track, week-to-week, especially as the season and first home games, near. So we see the estimates for Glory were pretty much on-the-mark and indeed, memberships are tracking a little ahead of previous seasons, or were a few months ago anyway.

United is an interesting one. If they can pull 30k at Adelaide Oval then what stops them from packing Hindmarsh week in, week out? Transport surely can't be the issue as there is a train station and a tram station within a few hundred metres and ample parking at the AEC. Can someone from Adelaide explain why there is such a huge gulf between the two? I know its basically Uniteds derby, but surely United could pull 15k at Hindmarsh if they can do 30k at the Oval.

I think this weekend has a real sense of event and occasion and will draw alot of event goers. I'm a true believer that we could average 17-20k if we were based in the city. Hindmarsh has improved remarkably over the past 5 years with the extension of the tram line, and the construction of the new AEC carpark. Train line isnt very convenient and I would be suprised if many people use it for games. But I think part of the deterrence from hindmarsh is still a bit of a stigma around the facilities around the ground, particularly the lack of cover, some of those hot days can be hard to handle in the 3 open stands, and would deter families. Additionally as with stadiums and clubs right across the country. It is often difficult to break the 80% capacity barrier, which at Hindmarsh is only 13,200.

This weekend is impossible to compare a normal fixture say vs Perth on a Sunday. Its got the Friday night factor, SA vs Vic, beautiful 27 degree night ahead, and the whole city is still jizzing itself over the new play toy (Adelaide oval). Tomorrows crowd really is the pinnacle of what we can acheieve, It will be interesting if this is made annual.

Yeah, hence Victory selected as the 'Marquee fixture', if you like, for Adelaide Oval. Few fixtures you can and have chosen for that, but Victory or Sydney FC. No surprise, it's usually one of those two clubs who feature as the 'Marquee fixture/visitor' for most A-League clubs. Till other combos like the 'Distance Derby', 'Diving Berisha, they stole the 2012 GF from us, Roar' etc.. somehow gain their own appeal, then that will remain the case. This is another bonus of Wanderers though - as a 'third way' hopefully they, lead inpart by their awesome travelling support, can help lift the appeal of their away fixtures, even outside of the Eastern Seaboard. More travelling support to AU and PG away games would instantly increase both the attendance and appeal for those games, for the locals aswell. Nothing like good away support to up the ante and throw down the gauntlet for the locals to turn up in voice too. Can't let the visitors undermine the home team! If so, then I'm sure it won't be long till AU are also hosting the likes of the Wanderers at Adelaide Oval too!

I'd lean more towards City than Wanderers at AO. The Vic v SA is hard to go past.

All the criticism of Newcastle is unwarranted, still 2 weeks away from 1st home game, they are above 8K members, despite all the ownership issues. Be great if they can get close to 10K, but a true footballing town.

Newcastle only looks bad because they have previously had an outstanding result (over 10K), ignore that previous result and 8k is a fantastic result for Newcastle given size, recent results and everything else that is going on.

Agreed guys and Davo, considering their under radar/underwhelming pre-season and even low key expectations under Stubbins (And with off the field) - they could surprise somewhat and their first game of the season against Mariners was a promising performance apparently. With the likes of Flores, Neumann, Joel Griffiths, Dave Carney, Montano, the talented young Mitch Cooper etc... They are certainly a dangerous team, with proven to be effective, A-League talent/threats upfront. Flores is still Flores too - the Johnny Warren medalist has a bee under his bonnet and will be seeking to recapture/prove some of the form of his AU days. The low-key Jets may finally be the vehicle for him to star again, hopefully.

if Newcastle get to 9k it would still be a reasonable result with all things considered. if they have a good year they will get more than 10k next year.

I thought they looked the better team against Mariners, hard done by, the looked very good in patches. I think they will get 9k, if they get 10k that will be outstanding for them, and the A-League as a whole.

Thanks for giving me the local perspective. I guess there were a few things I had overlooked such as the stadium cover and the perception of the facilities. Hopefully now that the stadium is/has receiving/received some upgrades. Realistically Hindmarsh is not viable long term due to the shape of the land and layout of the existing stadium and surrounding buildings, well that's my opinion anyway. Really impressed with the crowd numbers tonight as well, hopefully it can be replicated for like fixtures. It would be great to see United with an average of around 12k. With the team playing an attractive brand of football, members numbers up and general interest in the league increasing I don't see why it can't be achieved.

With tonights crowd included I doubt our average will be below 12k this year, pretty sure we were at 11.5k last year?

Hindmarsh is a tricky little location in terms of developing. The east stand is very close to manton st at NE corner making expansion of north and east very difficult, the Church behind the southern stand is also heritage listed. I have heard rumours that the AEC are doing some contingency on the viability and possibility of an upgrade to 25,000 with the previously touted roof.

If the ground was every upgraded to this kind of level, and most importantly with improved facilities and shelter, then I think our crowds would improve considerably. It would certainly give people a lot less reasons not to go.

Adelaide were 11,225 average last year, this year the way you are playing you will pass that. Coopers stadium is so good, i really hope it does get upgraded, Dad played there when once when he played for Rostrevor.

I'd like to think that the success of the Adelaide Oval fixture might have scored us an extra couple of thousand members.

You would be correct but unfortunately the game was a stinker for 70mins. 20 mins of decent play is not going to get you thousands of new members.
