Thorpe's lucky to not be part of that gen y, I gen generation where everyone documents every single part of their life! Food, cats, photos at parties with their 'friends'
That generation has nick darcy and all that malarkey instead
Come to think of it, I'd pick thorpey any day over macho gen y wannabe tough guy nick darshy I would definitely prefer to have Thorpie as a mate opposed to any of those Stilnox guys. As a result, his sexuality should be none of anyone's business Its like Ellen Degeneres before she came out of the closet, she had a sitcom I reckon I would have a stunning rousing conversation trying to keep up with Ellen for several hours on end, but for some annoying reason end up friendzoning myself!

I don't see why he gets a pat on the back and congratulations for saying something he could have said years ago.
It's 20 years since Ian Roberts outed himself as well as countless others in the public eye with far more to lose. It's ceased to be an issue years ago.
For everyone to be fawning over how "brave" he was really sticks in my craw a bit because for years he's denied it in countless interviews and publications and even in his autobiography 2 years ago he lied through his teeth saying he was as straight as die.
What's the take home message of the this story for those struggling with their sexuality? Deny you're gay for 20 years and then finally out yourself after anyone in the know already knew?
How does that help any poor 15 or 17 year old who is struggling with their sexuality now? The read they get from this is lie your arse off about it and hide it until it can no longer do you any harm and/or you think your sponsor's won't care and/or the money has dried up.
Would have respected him far more if he said 10 years ago "yeah I fancy blokes, what's it to you".
Far more of a statement.
And no I don't have an issue with homosexuals. Good on them and good on him. My comment is more on the ridiculous coverage this has been getting.
Flame away. Nothing controversial there.

Just heard on Hack that Thorpie's coming out was part of a deal he did with Michael Parkinson's management team which included the interview and a gig commentating the swimming at the Commonwealth games in Glasgow. I have even less respect for him now.

Its so strange how nobody batted an eyelid when Daniel Kowalski outted himself and Kowalski's mannerism looked more manlier than Thorpe Anyway in terms of other sportsmen being gay, its strange how England wicketkeeper Steven Davies has not being reconsidered for national team selection after he came out on England's Ashes tour in 2009, at the start of the t20s and odis component of that tour, he was seen to be an attacking batsman built the same mould as Adam Gilchrist Gareth Thomas, former Welsh International Rugby player-> Also, Tennis player Casey Dellacqua had a baby, with her partner being the mother in the relationship-> Edited by condemned666: 14/7/2014 07:20:10 PM

I can't even imagine what the guy was going through. The guy was barely finished high school when he won an Olympic gold medal for the first time. That's a young age to be open and proud, whether you are in the public eye or not.
Perhaps he wanted to be judged at that time on his performance, rather than have to deal with the inevitable circus that would have occurred if he'd made a big announcement. Not every gay person probably wants to be a spokesperson for every other gay person.
I hope one day we can get to the point where people don't have to be closeted while they are a professional sportsperson. But let's be honest, we're not there yet, especially not in contact sport. I can't think of a single NRL, AFL or a Super Rugby player currently playing who is out. Nor in Tennis. In cricket there are only a handful, and all of them are English rather than Australian.
There's way more work to be done to provide a supportive environment for gay people in sport. At least Thorpie will break down the stereotype that some kids still stubbornly have, that gay people are wusses who can't be tough.

Sadly society and the media have a weird obsession with people's sexuality . Hell the afl media were thinking of paying an ex player to out himself .. until this obsession with people's sexuality stops , people will still stay quiet

He was a sixteen yr old when he won and the questions about his sexuality were constant . He was 16 ffs and all the media cared about was if he was gay or not ? Really who gives a flying fuck if he is gay or not ? It's no one's business , yes he is in the public eye but his personal private life , is exactly that private

RC, though you are a troll and a moron I have to agree with you on this. People in the public eye will attract this sort of attention. It is a sad and sorry truth.

I couldn't care less if he is gay or not. Still the same Thorpie who won a ton of medals.
Slow news day....not really worth the headline to be honest.

I dont appreciate him at all, good on him for coming out but does he need to do a 250k interview to tell the world he is a homosexual? Seriously, nothing against him being gay but i have something against him being a money hungry, prick. If he has all these problems with self-esteem and depression why do you sell out your personal life? I got no respect for the man, not because he is gay but because he sold out. No one cares he is gay why did he have to milk it? He should give that money to charity if he had any decency about him. I supported him throughout his depression sage and personal issues but i can't ever respect a sell-out. Edited by Davstar: 14/7/2014 08:18:14 PM

Edited by Davstar: 14/7/2014 08:18:14 PM You make some good points. He really could have just put a twitter update saying he is officially gay and that should be the end of it. It seemed he dragged it on way too long and this could work against him.

Can't believe people are getting so worked up about it.
He got offered money for a candid interview. Many other famous people have been paid money to talk about their lives.
People just can't hide the fact they don't like homosexuals.
