Who is this afrodope that ricecrackers keeps posting about? I searched through the members registry and can't find any mention of a user with that name.

If the government is watching you searching for potentially inflammatory terms on google under an innocent premise then odds are they're going to see you searching for that innocent premise too. If you're consistently searching for IRA sites and aren't logging into the MU student portal and responding to your Political Sciences lecturer you're going to draw attention. But most people don't search for that kind of stuff without having a conspicuous trend or motive.

No doubt. And that's going to show across a prolonged internet history. If you're visiting sites about converting to islam or western motivated terrorism you're probably going to raise some alarm bells, but otherwise there's not really anything to worry about is there?

Because people like you would take it out of context and bitch about it. Mate don't flatter yourself and think that the government is actually watching you. They don't care about what you are doing at 3am on your laptop

Or maybe they are and your someone that needs to be removed from society. If that's the case, I support these new laws.

Firstly, I'm American and it's completly unconstitutional.

Secondly the method which they use is completly flawed to begin with. They collect so much data that they can't even be effective in a present way. They are pretty much the worlds worst hoarders

FFS Eliot Rodger was well known to be mentally I'll, wrote up a whole manifesto and released youtube videos describing his 'retribution'. And the NSA couldn't. Even catch this guy before he killed 6 innocent people.

They couldn't catch the boston bombers before the act despite their presence online and with radicals in Chechnya. What the fuck is this for and what the fuck are we paying for anyway?

Ironically they also couldn't catch Edward snowden (but then again he might know how to get around it, or just know how shit it is at what it's supposed to do)

It's really good at doing one thing, looking into the history of one person, they don't even need a warrant to do that and they wanted to keep it a secret. I'm not saying me, I'm not important to the gov at this current moment. I could be one day if I had information they don't want me to have or show the country.

Well not in isolation, but a combination of sites could be alarming

And if not long after looking at said sites books a flight to Syria, then that would be worrying and he hopefully would be put under more scrutiny

But wouldn't the fact that they didn't stop the attacks prove that their intelligence gathering isn't as extension as people are saying?

Or the Government knew about it and let it happen because a bit of fear is good.

No, it proves they collect too much and because of that they are useless at preventing imminent attacks.

Ok

But if you think we are brainwashed, what exactly are we brain washed about ?
We're in love with the nanny state despite our insistence to tell ourselves how easy going we are.

The NSA is spying on Americans and atleast there's outrage. Here no-one gives a shit and just shrug it off saying "if I've got nothing to hide I've got nothing to fear".

You can't ride a bike without a helmet. Can't smoke a cigarette at a train station. Bars can't serve shots after midnight. Bars have to close by certain times. Some R rated games and movies can't be sold here.

Those are just laws on the books, polls show over half of us want to ban cigarettes outright and raise the drinking age.

These lists do go on, and if my ipad didn't crash twice mid post I'd have shown more, but this how I feel about this country sometimes.

I agree with the sentiment but not the examples. Smoking in public places and wearing a helmet on a bike are obvious and necessary laws.

Well I gave 2 anecdotal cases were if the NSA was more pinpoint in their targeting should've been able to catch. But it's also well documented it's overall pretty useless

Quote:
The review found that the NSA’s bulk collection of Americans’ phone metadata, justified under the Patriot Act, was responsible for initiating investigations in only four of the 225 cases detailed by the New America Foundation and that none of those four prevented attacks.

Requiring a helmet just discourages bike riding. All these blue bikes in the city (melbourne) are pretty much useless unless for what they are designed for unless casually carry a helmet around with them.

Lots of European countries don't require helmets and their accident rates are lower than here, are dropping and ours are rising. Maybe if we had more cyclists on the road cars would be more aware.

Why is banning smoking in public places an obvious law? Second hand smoke doesn't really affect people unless you are in a confined space, and I'm for banning it in cars with children.

It's ok government, I know you spent a lot of money on this and failed, but you'll do better in the future

It's like you're trying to prove my initial point that Australians love the nanny state.

Meanwhile the only bit of evidence you provided that Americans are dumb and brainwashed is there are Obama posters everywhere (which there aren't) and that jersey shore exists.
